Orton praises Quinn, will show for workouts Friday

K. Orton.jpgKyle Orton isn’t going to throw a fit about the acquisition of Brady Quinn.

The five-year veteran plans to show up for the team’s offseason training program Friday, unlike some of his restricted free agent teammates.  Orton will miss four days because he’s at the NFLPA meetings in Hawaii.  Orton publicly endorsed the Quinn deal:

“We’ve made a lot great moves this
offseason, and this is another one. He’s a great player,
and I’ll be happy to work with him,” Orton told the Denver Post.

Orton was told he will remain the team’s starter, but he can’t be thrilled with his new competition.  He’s definitely not pumped about some of the NFL’s contractual inequities.

“This is going to
be my fourth year as a starter and I’ve never been the highest-paid qb
on my team,”
Orton told SI’s Jim Trotter before the Quinn move.

That streak will end this season, assuming Quinn doesn’t get 70% of Denver’s snaps and Chris Simms is no longer on the roster.  (Yes, Simms remains on the team.)

As a player rep, Orton knows the score.  He made some intelligent comments to Trotter about a player’s right to not show up for offseason workouts.

With a job to protect, Orton is intelligent enough not to exercise that option.

    I love Orton’s attitude. He’s classy as can be about the whole situation. I love having him as a Bronco and cheering for him on Sundays

    what did u expect Gregg with an extra g on the end…that he would pout and rant on his twitter page and want to leave Denver like another pale faced QB did the year before

  3. Steeler4life says: Mar 15, 2010 2:16 PM

    I wonder if he would be saying the same things if it were Cutler or Roethlisberger

    And I thought the QB situation in Oakland was going to be a boring battle…

    Orton’s a class act… after being treated poorly at times by management (that’d be in Chicago) he always went to work and did his job without complaining. Even when he had to back up that no talent ass clown Griese after backing up Sexy Rexy for years he treated it as an opportunity and became a better QB under him. He’ll probably even help out Quinn the same way Griese did him.

    Hmmmm… Kyle Orton praising Brady Quinn’s 5.4 yard-per-throw average? That’s “a great player”?
    Good luck with that, Denver.

    Kyle Orton is a god among men. As long as he starts then Denver has a shot at winning it all.

    Kyle Orton – Chris Simms – Brady Quinn – man that just strikes fear in all the NFL teams doesn’t it? Don’t worry donkey fans McDickhead will be gone in 2011 and you can hopefully get in someone who actually knows how to run a NFL franchise.

  9. Other Bears says: Mar 15, 2010 2:44 PM

    Ask any coach in the league “Would you rather have Cutler or Orton and Quinn?” 97% of them would pick Cutler.

    yes because he is intelligent enough to know anyone making it to the NFL is a great player, doesnt mean they are Elite like Peyton, Brees, etc
    they may not all be elite like you are at sitting behind a keyboard, but they are all great

    @Other Bears
    You might be right, maybe 97% of coaches would choose Cutler over Orton and Quinn though we will never know because coaches in the NFL wouldn’t answer the question in the first place. What we do know is that Cutler has never had a winning season in the NFL, he is a terrible decision maker, a cocky punk, lead the league in INTs last season and has had BY FAR the most red zone INTs the last 2 seasons. I for one am glad that he is the Bears problem now and will gladly take a class act like Orton any day over him. Whether or not Quinn becomes a quality NFL QB in Denver remains to be seen but with McDs history with QBs I think he has a decent chance.

    Thats nice, but Kyle Orton is still a mediocre QB. So really his praise means nothing, about a QB who couldn’t make the most of his chances.

  13. wydok says: Mar 15, 2010 3:18 PM

    A relationship between a QB and a team is not like a marriage. A starting QB should not assume a team is “cheating” because the bring in another QB that could be the starter.
    Instead, the QB should consider it a opportunity to show that he is the best person to lead the team. It’s like any other job: If you suck at it, you get replaced.

    “he can’t be thrilled with his new competition”
    I have to disagree. You know the Broncos have to get a QB. I think Orton doesn’t mind taking his chances competing against Quinn.
    As a matter of fact, I think he’s thrilled it’s Quinn.

  15. HellsGrimTyrant says: Mar 15, 2010 3:47 PM

    Reason number 137 why Orton is better than Cutler. If there was one way the Broncos could lose it was if Orton took umbrage and demanded a trade like a certain signal caller currently with the Bears. Orton was way better than Quinn was last year. He has to realize the only way he loses the starting job is if he totally stinks up or Quinn overnight transforms into Tom Brady.

    Wow, the Denver apologists and Orton suck-ups are out in force. Reading these comments was a hoot.
    Ask this question: Who trades draft picks and a RB to improve their backup QB spot???
    Answer: Nobody – teams can get a Jim Sorgi, Derek Anderson, blah blah blah anywhere…
    My point: If McDaniels thought Orton was effective, they wouldn’t have traded for Quinn. Period.

    @ HellsGrimTyrant :
    would you mind giving any of the other 136 reasons why Orton is better than Cutler ?
    TIA

    Broncos get ready for the bottom of AFC west. Good luck.

  19. rx says: Mar 15, 2010 6:20 PM

    This is all the same crap everyone said about the Broncos last year. Then they were better than everyone expected. Every move they have made this offseason, including this one, has made the team better than it was at the end of the season.
    Quinn will be Orton’s back up. Orton will improve with his second year in the offense and now Quinn pushing him from behind. They gave up two late future picks and a running back they had no intention of using to get a backup QB that is 3.5 times cheaper than Simms with 10x the upside. Where is the risk? How is this stupid?

  20. souldogdave says: Mar 15, 2010 7:05 PM

    Actually, no, Simms was cut.

  21. HellsGrimTyrant says: Mar 15, 2010 8:15 PM

    @spliffbunker
    Had a list but my hard drive crashed.
    But as a follow up, Quinn returned Orton’s classy gesture by pretty declaring he was going to take his job.

    ====================================
    Comparing Cutler to Roethlisberger?
    Remember when Jay Cutler got busted for raping a woman in a Las Vegas hotel room?
    No?
    How about when he was filmed ripping the heads off of baby bunnies on Easter Sunday?
    No?
    Did I miss the story about him pissing in the Pope’s hat and then kicking a kid in a wheelchair?
    Damn…. then I guess that some of the posters here are just idiots then.

  23. msnyder275 says: Mar 16, 2010 12:11 AM

    @rx
    Orton played to about the same level as he has for the past three years.
    He manages the game, can’t throw an accurate deep ball and can’t rally a team from behind.
    Of course, another year in the Denver offense will fix all this.
    Well, unless you count immaculate reception II.
    Freakin Cutler
