PFT Daily: Broncos can't lose in Quinn deal

The Brady Quinn era is over in Cleveland.

The news is almost good enough to get Browns fans to forget that the sun is rising on the Jake Delhomme dynasty.

From the perspective of Quinn’s new employer, what does the deal mean?  It’s the subject of the latest edition of PFT Daily.

What it really means is with Brady Queen in town, Kyle Shanahan needs to keep tighter tabs on his boy, Chris Simms. Not that there’s anything WRONG with that.

Holmgren and Heckert are supposed to know what they are doing, but a young insentive laden quarterback contract.
    I don’t know?
Then they traded him to the land of Browns killers? Why did’t they try to ship him to Dallas or Minnesota?
Instead they are going to send him to one of our biggest rivals?

  3. CapsLockKey says: Mar 15, 2010 1:24 PM

I think they can lose if for some reason it creates a split locker room over a QB controversy. It’s not like they gave Orton a resounding vote of confidence with a new contract or anything.

    Florio,
I finally registered after years of following your site. I was around during the dark ages. This is a complete non story.
First of all, KC and Denver don’t and won’t trade players. Inter division trades are rare and never between these two. Cassell is Pioli/Haley’s guy and they don’t want to face donkeys/Cassell twice a year into the future.
Second, Weis didn’t win with Quinn and wouldn’t in KC. We could have drafted him and passed on him for good reason. Cassell will improve with a better line, time with the new offense (remember it was installed last week of preseason last year), and weapons. Please stop throwing this out. Non story. Cassell will be give this year and next before they have to address his contract. Watch out for the Chiefs in a few years when the talent level goes up. Great site again Florio……..

McDaniels also wanted Quinn last year….

  6. lordmandinga says: Mar 15, 2010 1:31 PM

Given a chance to compete for the job, I think Quinn will excel in Denver.

“Instead they are going to send him to one of our biggest rivals?”
These Quinn fans sound like 15 year old girls. Since when did Denver become one of the Borwns biggest rivals?????????????

  8. DnBrnc says: Mar 15, 2010 1:40 PM

He is still saying that McDaniels tried to get Cassel. That really isn’t true. The Pats contacted him to see if he was interested, not the other way around.

  9. BenRapistberger says: Mar 15, 2010 1:41 PM

This trade should really surprise no one, a lot of people thought this might happen last year. Brady Quinn excelled in this offense at Notre Dame under Charlie Weiss. Orton will not start more than a handful of games this year.

@Duan-Instead they are going to send him to one of our biggest rivals?
Really? The Bronco’s haven’t been our biggest rivals since Bernie Kosar was the QB.

  11. Citizen Strange says: Mar 15, 2010 1:44 PM

The Broncos can’t lose on the Quinn deal only if they are able to schedule Army and Navy.

  12. darrius_heyward-bey-butterfingers says: Mar 15, 2010 1:47 PM

Quinn must be really good to have cost the Broncos so much. Either that or it means he’s worthless and has no potential since any team could have offered just a 3rd or 4th.

  13. Dawgpound2009 says: Mar 15, 2010 1:53 PM

What a lollipop of a trade this must be for Denver!

  14. LighTsouT says: Mar 15, 2010 1:57 PM

    @Duan
Do you think Dallas or Minnesota really wanted him, stupid? it’s a supply and demand business, and I’m assuming the Broncos were the only team who wanted what the Browns were supplying. Personally, I think it’s a horrible move for the broncos as CapsLockKey pointed out, it could divide the locker room and at the same time. Peyton Hillis isn’t a bad running FB, if Denver actually used him properly like Shannahan did his final season in Denver. Cleveland got the better end of the deal here.

  15. HellsGrimTyrant says: Mar 15, 2010 1:58 PM

Funny, he says there’s no way the Broncos can lose in this deal recaps the Matt Cassel/Jay Cutler debacle which is EXACTLY how they can be the losers. If Orton feels insulted that he has to compete with Quinn for the starting job, a guy he flat out smoked in the stats and wins column last year, then yeah Broncos could lose big.

    Simms was a goner anyway.

Florio, I was with your report up until the end. Sure, it’s mostly a no-lose situation for the Broncos, and I also look for Chris Simms to hit the floor soon (assuming no one trades for Orton), meaning the Broncos will likely STILL save money on Quinn even if he takes every snap this year and earns those escalators.
But the bit about trading to KC is a huge stretch. Not only are they division rivals, but the contract numbers for Cassel are ridiculous. If Denver were interested in trading Brady out that quickly, that means his value would have sunk even lower than it is now, making the amount Denver would have to give over completely ridiculous.
It is also important to remember that Cassel was not the only QB McDaniels tried to pick up through the Cutler trade. While Cassel was the top target, Quinn was second on the list. Sadly, the Browns wanted too much for him, offering (as I understand it), Quinn and a second for Cutler. The Bears just offered more. What a difference a year makes.

  18. WarrenMoonGOAT says: Mar 15, 2010 2:04 PM

McDaniels is thinking he can turn Quinn into that pocket passer and spread offense QB he can’t get out of Orton
i don’t kno if Quinn has all the skills but McDaniels luvs all people named Brady

  19. Fonetik says: Mar 15, 2010 2:04 PM

There was a “Brady Quinn era?” HAH!

  20. Brewster says: Mar 15, 2010 2:08 PM

Florio you keep talking about Cassell to Denver. But you keep neglecting to mention one important issue that most likely would preclude that from happening. Cassell’s contract. It is highly unlikely that Pat Bowlen would allow McDaniels to bring Cassell in under the terms of his current contract. Way too much money for an unproven QB.
Besides if McDaniels doesn’t produce this year the contract he’ll most need to worry about is his own.

  21. Audient says: Mar 15, 2010 2:15 PM

The Browns “big” rivalry with Denver dates back to the late 80s… But this isn’t Kosar versus Elway for the championship anymore.
It was a big deal. Back then.
This Browns fan has no issue with doing business with Broncos today. It is not like we’re trading with someone within the division.

  22. Howie Handles says: Mar 15, 2010 2:21 PM

    “Weis didn’t win with Quinn’
Wasn’t ND 10-3 and 10-2 with Weis and Quinn?

  23. Big Jake says: Mar 15, 2010 2:43 PM

As long as Denver doesn’t play USC, and schedules all the service academies, then Quinn is a winner. It’s those pesky NFL defenses with their confounded athletes that gives Brady a little trouble. BQ struggled against the Cleveland Brown’s practice squad.
    Go Denver! Beat Army!

  24. Howboutdemcowboys says: Mar 15, 2010 3:09 PM

    @ kcbigchief
Unless you were going to trade up you couldn’t have drafted him. Cleveland took Quinn at 22 and you had the 23rd pick. Rumors had it K.C. was going to pick Quinn which is why Cleveland traded ahead of them to begin with. . . . .it’s a shame b/c you almost sounded like you knew what you were talking about

  25. Beauregard says: Mar 15, 2010 3:23 PM

They’re both decent players in need of a change of scenery.
But come on, a first round QB for a fullback? Denver robbed Cleveland (Again, sorry Ernest).

  26. el_dude00 says: Mar 15, 2010 3:42 PM

There has never been a player to live more on their college exploits in the pros than Brady Quinn, Myoplex Woman.
I don’t care what he did at ND. It’s what he didn’t do in Cleveland. He couldn’t beat out Derek Anderson who we could have gotten for nothing.
Instead we gave up a talented (but rarely used) FB/RB dude, and some lame picks for a young, fragile, inaccurate QB with no deep ball and zero credentials in the NFL.
Fine. Whatever. The more you poke around, the less of a story it is.

  27. JoeSchmoe says: Mar 15, 2010 3:51 PM

The Brown’s rivals are the local HS teams.

  28. extreme469 says: Mar 15, 2010 4:30 PM

I am a life long Browns fan and was excited when they drafted Quinn. That being said, he did absolutely nothing as a starter in Cleveland. The Browns lack of talent certainly could have had something to do with that. But did he show great arm strength? Did he show accuracy as a passer? No and no. How long should a team keep running a guy out there saying he just needs a few more starts or a better RB or a better this or that. A guy that wants to be a stud QB in this league needs to have that swagger. Quinn didn’t have that. He may turn out to be a good player, but not Manning or Brees. Anyone that thinks he is in their league is fooling himself.

Chiefs were going to take him according to the local media. Cleveland traded up with cowboys (you should have know that) I believe to get Quinn. We took Bowe instead.
    Howie Handles
My apologies. I thought ND was bad the whole time Weiss was there. I don’t follow them much and assumed they were bad.
Still don’t see Cassell traded, media around here would go berserk going thru QB’s. Very few would want Quinn. Most would want Cassell to prove himself with weapsons around him, MUCH like Trent Green who was bad his first year here without weapons.
    I do know what I’m talking about……sometimes.

  30. Howboutdemcowboys says: Mar 15, 2010 11:04 PM

    @ kcbigchief
I know they traded with Dallas. they traded with Dallas to leapfrog KC. KC took Bowe because Quinn was off the board because Cleveland traded up with Dallas. To pick “before” KC picked. Dallas had pick 22 KC had 23rd pick. Cleveland traded with Dallas to get their 22nd pick to pick Quinn before KC had a chance to pick Quinn. KC didn’t pick Bowe instead, they took Bowe because Quinn was already drafted.
