Report: Favre was heavily involved in recruiting Tomlinson

One of the factors in LaDainian Tomlinson’s decision to sign with the New York Jets instead of the Minnesota Vikings was the uncertainty regarding the playing status of Vikings quarterback Brett Favre.

But according to Bob Glauber of Newsday, Favre himself attempted to assuage any doubts Tomlinson had.

Glauber reports, citing a source familiar with the Vikings’ situation, that Favre was heavily involved in the recruitment process and spoke to Tomlinson by phone.

I’m not among the 35 online subscribers to Newsday, so I can’t tell you what else Glauber’s story says, but Glauber notes that if Favre is actively trying to recruit players for the Vikings’ 2010 roster, that’s a pretty big clue that Favre himself plans to be on the Vikings’ 2010 roster.

Of course, even if that’s what Favre plans right now, the chances are pretty good that he’ll change his mind in the next few months. Probably several times.

    Swing and a miss.
bottom line, why would LT wanna sit behind Peterson waiting for an injury.

No surprise there. Tomlinson wouldn’t have considered the Vikes at all without assurances that Favre would be back.
The bottom line is that Tomlinson went with the money. Endorsement deals in New York. I think the Jets had a Cinderella season though. First year cioach and QB with the JETS of all teams. Thyat isn’t going to happen twice. He’ll learn like Houshmanzedah. Money and Championships don’t always go hand in hand. The Jets will miss Thomas Jones and I think Sanchez will come bvack down to Earth. Ryan will probably explode causing choas in the locker room as well.

  7. jx4cmario1 says: Mar 15, 2010 2:41 PM

  10. picksixbolts says: Mar 15, 2010 2:43 PM

My opinion on why i’m not surprised LT didn’t go to Minn. is, one, the Jets have a offensive corr. that just happens to be his true coaches son in Brian Schott. and , two, I think he wants to give it to ol’ Hoodie over there there in New England. I’m far from a Jets fan, but I’ll be rooting for LT.

  11. Contra says: Mar 15, 2010 2:43 PM

NICE! Shows that Favre actually cares about his team and is focused on recruiting the right people to help win a Super Bowl. Favre will be back!

  12. clintcooper says: Mar 15, 2010 2:43 PM

If Favre was actually involved in trying to recruit LT for the Vikings, I can’t imagine why LT would pick the Jets. I mean, I know the Vikings are cursed and all, but the Jets are cursed too! Favre, Peterson, Shiancoe, and Rice make a near-unbeatable team.

  13. rbais2 says: Mar 15, 2010 2:44 PM

Isn’t Bob Glauber the same guy that said the Bengals would not even interested in T.O.?
How is this guy a legit reporter?

  14. Love_Boat_Scandal says: Mar 15, 2010 2:45 PM

Maybe Favre telling LT he was coming back is what prompted LT to go to the Jets. Unlike Jared Allen (and Pervy Harvin), not everyone likes butt slaps from other men.

  15. njcheesehead72 says: Mar 15, 2010 2:45 PM

Favre will play in 2010. And he won’t make his “decision” until after training camp is over. Conveniently.

  16. Citizen Strange says: Mar 15, 2010 2:47 PM

Big deal. If La Toya Jackson can be a police officer Brett Favre can pull the trigger on some Viking personnel moves.

  17. Jeff0621 says: Mar 15, 2010 2:47 PM

I wouldn’t believe a word of what LT says…he’s the consumate game player. He had no intention of signing in Minn (read ZIP)….he was simply using tMinn as leverage to get his deal. LT believes his golden ticket is tied to the big apple and madison avenue (endorsement deals)

  18. Ruvell100 says: Mar 15, 2010 2:47 PM

Favre could always use a good checkdown receiver to overlook at a crucial time.

  19. internettoughguy says: Mar 15, 2010 2:48 PM

Just another reason for me to believe that #4 will be back, and that is all we need (oh, and keeping injuries to a minmum) to get to the promised land.
Anybody who doesn’t have this team as a favorite for the SB with Favre back doesn’t have a clue.

  20. Florio-is-a-tool says: Mar 15, 2010 2:49 PM

That logic seems a little off to me. If Favre was involved in recruiting LT and LT still said one of the reasons he chose the Jets was because the uncertainty of Favre returning, then it’s obvious Favre couldn’t convince him. That doesn’t sound like a real positive sign to me.

  25. Seth says: Mar 15, 2010 2:56 PM

I wonder if Brett has had the thought run through his head that maybe he actually hurt the Vikings, even himself, here by not being 100% in or out…..nnnaaaahhhh.

  26. PackFaninPackLand says: Mar 15, 2010 2:57 PM

Cue the Favre haters for wanting to recruit Hall of Fame talent to his team, because, you know, Favre should be happy with the players he has.
Of course Tom Brady recruits Randy Moss and he’s considered a hero and a great guy, but when Favre did it, the Favre-haters (including Florio( gave him $hit for trying to be GM.
    Go figure.

  27. Supersuckers says: Mar 15, 2010 2:58 PM

LT: Bonanza, but they let me get an extra baked potatoe.
BF: Good for you, get what ya’ can.
LT: So, tell me, how was it with this team last year?
BT: It was great. Great organization, friendly people. Let me skip all of Training Camp and we got a long great. Wonderful guys in the locker room. I stand behind them, one and all.
LT: So, you comin’ back next year?
BT: Huh? Me? Geez, I don’t know what I want to do yet, haven’t even thought about it yet.
    chirp, chirp.
    LT: Ok, Butt thanks.
BT: Anytime LT. Remember, get what you can and run!
    LT: Will do, later Butt.

people need to stop talking about a guy who averaged 3.3 ypc last season like he is a game changer. Favres offseason antics just continue to hurt teams he is on.

  45. Brownie says: Mar 15, 2010 3:16 PM

It’s all about the yardage LT thinks he can get in New York. He saw the small amount of action Chester Taylor got last year and even Adrian had less action because of Favre. LT just wants to keep moving up in the record books in an offense that is built around the run….the Vikings are no longer built around the run.
That said…I still think he made the wrong choice. The Jets already have 2 backs that average over 4 yards per carry. He’ll be sharing time with 2 other backs. And after he has a crappy season filled with “injuries” they’ll cut him just like they cut Thomas Jones. LT doesn’t run hard anymore. He’s soft and falls down as soon as someone touches him. He has blamed it on injuries the last couple years, but I don’t know if I buy it.

  46. Favre2Harvin says: Mar 15, 2010 3:16 PM

  50. ItsallaboutBrett says: Mar 15, 2010 3:26 PM

  53. TexansMike says: Mar 15, 2010 3:31 PM

Sounds to me like the Vikings used LT to see if he could get a commitment out of Favre a little early.
I heard that LT called Brett on the flight back to San Diego from NY, and off the record, Farve told him “I don’t know yet”.
Easy decision for LT. Take the NY endorsements and go for it.

  54. JimmySmith says: Mar 15, 2010 3:36 PM

What a slap in the face but something tells me that Chilly’s dating history has made him used to it by now. While no one is 100% sure why LT signed with the Jets, I have to believe he doesn’t have much confidence in the entire Viking organization and finds Favre as believable as the tears at his first retirement press conference or Favre’s 2nd retirement comments about having nothing left or his comments all during training camp until the moment his chauffeur pulled up to the airport.
Like the boy who cried Wolf, Favre can no longer be taken at face value. Unless he promises to throw INT’s in key playoff games, then you can take that to the bank because his track record really backs that one up.

Why are Vikings fans even remotely disappointed in this?????? I caould have cared less if he did, or didn’t sign. We are talking about a HOF running back on his last hurrah. It will be sad to see Tomlinson ( I don’t refer to him as L.T. We already had one of those, and he is in the HAll already) as a former shell of himself.
It wasn’t money (ironically enough) that brought LaDainian to NY. Nor was it the desire to win a title. He choose the Jet’s because they promised him more playing time. I wouldn’t have minded him as a 3rd down guy, getting around 5-7 touches per game. He will see twice that in NY, and by November the old body will be aching.
I am sure the Vikings will end up just fine…..

I’m EXTREMELY skeptical of this one. I would need to get this confirmed from LT or Brett, because I don’t buy it.
If Brett recruited LT so numerously and strongly as this report suggests, than I don’t think LT would’ve signed with NY, or LT would’ve given some sort of clue/indication about his conversation with Brett if it took place when explaining why he chose NY.
Brett has been tight lipped about next year, and I don’t think he would let his reveal come from a “Newsday” source.

  66. Mick730 says: Mar 15, 2010 3:49 PM

How could LT turn down Brett Favre and a guaranteed Super Bowl title? I simply do not understand! Doesn’t he know that Brett Favre has single handedly won the Super Bowl each and every year since he entered the league with the Falcons in 1991? Most people who watch the NFL can’t even remember a Super Bowl in which Brett Favre did not participate and win, and almost all of them won with Favre throwing a last minute, pinpoint, brilliant pass under great pressure and duress.
It’s not like the Vikings are QB’d by a big game choke artist or something, you know, the kind of guy who either throws multiple picks returned for touchdowns in big games or throws the most boneheaded interceptions when it really matters. Jeeesh…..

So if you blame Favre’s missing training camp for his choke, what is Rodgers’ excuse? He basically had 3 years of training camp, was there for all of the 2009 camp, and still choked when it mattered most.
Using your logic, a playoff collapse is inevitable for Rodgers, seeing as how he has and will continue to show up for camp, and has choked in 100% of his playoff appearances.

Yeah, you got us on that one. But I also said that the only thing the Vikings will have to cheer about (at the end) were those same two wins over the Packers, which earned them a big ol’ “good for you!” I think that falls a bit short of the expectations you were predicting for the Vikings, doesn’t it? Class is an orgainzation that has kept the numerous skeletons of said prima dona behind those closet doors even when faced with multiple “interviews” given by prima dona player in every news media outlet in the country. Class is also an orgainzation who went with the younger talent in the face of the myopic griping of a small subset of an overrated fanbase.
Classless is an orgainzation who perpetrates whizzinators, love boats, running down meter maids, allows players to squirt refs with water, and picks up overrated hicks from Mississippi from the airport in order to parade said hick around town. Classless is also a poster on a website that posts things like “I thought I hated Favre” and “Packer fans have no class whatsoever.”

LDT is newly-married. Did his wife want to join Deanna shopping Mall of America or did she have her own designs in mind? Shopping is just better in Manhattan.

LT’s decision makes sense I guess. The Jets were able to make the NFC Championship game and should be as good if not better next season especially if we assume Sanchez is much improved which would be typical for a 2nd year QB. New York offers more side money options and for all we know the Jets were offering more money in the first place.
And perhaps most importantly is playing time. LT would have an important role focused on 3rd down and short yardage. So his touches would come in high quality situations. However, look it up and you see Chester Taylor had only 8 total touches per game last season. All Day didn’t get his nickname by not being a guy capable of being a workhorse. LT will probably get anywhere from 2 to 3 more touches per game in New York and that is huge for a guy without a ton of time left and who does seem to care about legacy and records and all time lists.
Regardless of what any twits say on these sites AD is an incredibly good back and probably the best in the NFL right now. He lost 2 or 3 more fumbles last season than the average player would with that many touches. But his fumbling rate is pretty similar to Payton, Dickerson, and Jim Brown and most people to this day consider those guys to be the best during their hay day as they should consider Peterson.
LT in Minny means very little action for him unless AD gets hurt.

  89. DallasFan in NY says: Mar 15, 2010 4:59 PM

I for one would have a lot more respect for the guy, HOF stats not withstanding, if he’d just stop jerking everyone around. What do you not know now that you will come training camp? Ahh, training camp; that’s it. I don’t want to go through that at my age and be with my teammates. That is what sickens me about this guy…..

lol at Packer fans in here saying “I told you so”. Like this report that Brett talked to LT about playing here totally erases all of the awesomeness that was last season, and could be this season as well. The only people that get into the whole “Brett is running your show” crap is haters outside of our own fanbase so wtf do we really care about that logic?
What the article doesn’t mention, is that Pat Williams was there courting him in person. All Day called him as well and talked about it. Brett called him too. It is HIGHLY COMMON for marquee players on a team to be asked to help convince free agents to come here. Just because Brett is involved doesn’t mean that everything is different than normal operating procedure. In fact, the only “story” here is further evidence that Brett is less on the fence about playing than the last few years.
God you guys are idiots. Favre is a fruit cake don’t get me wrong. But he’s a helluva player, helps us win, gets the team a lot of money and attention, and also gives us something to poke fun at poor slacker fans for the rest of our lives. It is nothing but a good thing and your management made this possible and now you have to live with us ribbing you forever. You chumps ain’t getting off the hook this easily, no matter how delusional.
LT is a backup running back that went elsewhere. Don’t let the names involved make you think this was some massive deal. I do think he would have helped the team win and fit in nicely but 8 touches a game wasn’t enough and I don’t blame him. We’ll be fine splitting those touches between Harvin, Young, and likely a drafted RB or Fargas/Westbrooke/???.

It’s a team game. But players should be held accountable for their actions and decisions.
Favre is to blame for three turnovers in the NFC championship, including a horrible pass most high schoolers know better than to throw.
Rodgers is at fault for not seeing a blitzing DB and not getting the ball out quick enough in the situation. I don’t fault him for fumbling. It happens frequently when QBs get sacked. But he should’ve seen the blitzer and gotten rid of the ball. And he shouldn’t have overthrown Jennings on the previous play.
