Tom Brady takes a stand for Earth Hour

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady isn’t normally the type to speak out on matters of public policy, but he’s making an exception to partner with the World Wildlife Fund to promote something called Earth Hour.

Basically, Earth Hour is a campaign urging people to turn off their lights for an hour, starting at 8:30 p.m., on Saturday, March 27. And Brady has appeared in a public service announcement encouraging everyone to take part.

You can watch the ad here, and it’s worth watching if for no other reason than that, as Ryan Wilson of FanHouse points out, it looks like Brady is wearing a wig.

Brady’s wife, Gisele Bundchen, has also filmed an Earth Hour PSA. It’s worth noting that Brady says he’s in Boston while Bundchen says she’s in Los Angeles. Though I applaud them for standing up for something they believe in, I can’t help but think they probably burn more than their fair share of fossil fuels flying back and forth between Boston and L.A.

    Earth Hour?
Here is what I will do for Earth Hour:
I am gonna spray hairspray into the sky on purpose. I want Earth City to be the new Hawaii.
Then I am gonna buy 40 gallons of gas for my friends hummer and we are gonna drive it just to put as much smog in the air as possible.
Maybe later we will feed a bunch of cows chicken parm so they double their farting since according to the BBC cow farts cause global warming.
How will you celebrate your earth hour.

Good for him. Cue the A-holes who want to whine and moan that nothing at all is wrong with the melting ice caps or the practice of slashing and burning whatever forests you please and polluting as fast and efficiently as possible. I know for a fact alot of these tools tried turning on extra lights for this event last year. Can you imagine the ignorance? Way to go fellas, burn up our unlimited resources faster. . .

You’re right. People who speak for conservationism shouldn’t have jobs that require them to travel.
We should make them pick one spot and stay there. Yeah!! That’ll teach them not to speak out for good causes!
    Brilliant.

As is the case in most of these good causes…
It’s the celebrities job to convince us to change the world, but it’s our job to do it. Why would they stop driving 12 cylinder Bently’s and powering 80 room houses?

And people will probably use their TVs and computers and many other electronics during Earth Hour…who cares?
Earth Hour may not solve all our problems regarding wasteful energy usage but it’s a start. Each person’s involvement in it helps create a larger collective consciousness towards the issue. Pointing out the negative in this case does nothing except give the passive one more reason to remain indifferent towards this issue. Good job.

  21. Stone says: Mar 15, 2010 2:02 PM

“Parcells Rule #11 – Don’t be a celebrity quarterback.” Oops – too late – Brady is now fully in late career Joe Namath mode. For any Pats fan who had wondered if Brady had lost his edge with age and fame, wonder no longer. He has.

  24. patsfanlisa says: Mar 15, 2010 2:03 PM

I suppose everyone would rather see a QB licking Oreos with his goofy ass brother or cueing ping pong balls across the table to Justin Timberlake??? How much money do you think they get for acting like idiots?
Or perhaps a QB accused twice now of sexual misconduct is more popular?
And a PSA, btw, does not pay their spokespeople for the campaign spot.

  26. PackFaninPackLand says: Mar 15, 2010 2:04 PM

First off I want to see Brady turn off all his lights and sit in the dark for an hour at his mansion.
Second, this is just more symbolism over substance by liberals in this global warming nonsense.
Funny how last year when a percentage of people across this country took part in this nonsense, that the media didn’t report that it actually took MORE power for the utility companies to generate back UP again afterwards when the people turned their lights back on again en mass an hour later, instead us incrementally turning on (or off) our lights like we all do at various times of the evening.
More do-gooderism by libs that of course do the EXACT OPPOSITE of what they say it will. Typical.

  41. BUNYAN says: Mar 15, 2010 2:19 PM

I’m so sick of hearing about A#@HOLES like this. Anyone who believes that turning off some light bulbs has any significant effect on energy consumption is one of three things: stupid, ignorant or corrupt. Fossil fuels are God’s gift to mankind. If you don’t believe in God, then it’s nature’s gift to mankind. Without fossil fuels most of us, if not all of us would not exist today. As far as this nonsense about saving the planet, the planet doesn’t need saving. It’s doing fine. It’s been around for 4.5 Billion years and has been through far more destructive forces than mankind could ever dream up. When we’re all gone the planet will still be here. Green and blue as ever. Stop repeating the environmentist propaganda that the media and our government education system keeps propagating and do alittle research of your own. I’M SICK OF HEARING ABOUT THIS NONSENES OF GOING GREEN!

It’s really cool, it comes with a removable knee brace, and it cries out “throw a flag!” when you get within 5 feet of it. It also comes with it’s own video camera, so that you can keep an eye on it while you’re at work. Anyways… I’ll make sure that it’s well lit by the 27th. I think 3 or 4 floodlights should do the trick.

For example, the Humane Society likes you to think they help animal shelters. In reality, less than one half of one percent of the revenue they generate goes to animal shelters. In 2008, the HSUS generated $99,664,400 in revenue, with only $452,371 going to animal shelters. Of course, a much larger portion went to the retirement funds of the HSUS employees.

Earth has been around for a long time. It’s very egotiscal of us to think that we can destroy it. We could kill every living thing on here including ourselves and this planet will continue to thrive. Nuke the hell out of it and eventually life will begin again.

Geniuses, are far as I know, this is the only planet that we have. Am I right? It would make sense to me that, oh I don’t know, maybe we should try to save the planet. If that makes me a liberal then clearly liberals are way more intelligent than conservatives.
Denying global warming is the equivalent of a eight-year-old putting his or her fingers in his or her ears and saying repeatedly “Blah, blah, blah, I can’t hear you.” Do you think the “liberals” have thousands of scientists in their back pockets? Seriously, how dumb are you?

Finally, somebody else without their head up their own ass. Even if you don’t think global warming is real (I’m still not convinced it’s not at least partly attributable to the natural cycle of Earth’s temperatures) the fact of the matter is we trash this planet on a daily basis, without regard to the damage we do.

That the people in our society who are in a position to proliferate such a message are wealthy, and that wealthy people lead a certain lifestyle does not make them hypocrites for throwing weight behind a message they believe in. People who petitioned for drinking water standards didn’t have to stop drinking water.
People who petition for reform don’t have to be martyrs for their cause. Especially when they are not telling others to be.

It’s just so great to watch liberals eat up everything a liberal politician tells them, even if it’s complete and utter bull$hit.
Global warming is the PERFECT example of that. Al Gore says it’s true, so, SHAZAM, it MUST be true. Even if Newsweek pointed out the 59 (yes 59 errors &/or lies in his little propaganda flick “An Inconvenient Lie”) a few years ago.
The IPCC has admitted (in MULTIPLE stories over the past several months if you care to read them – although liberals NEVER want to heard the truth – only what makes them “feel good” about thmeselves) that they doctored the evidence in order to keep the global warming research dollars flowing in. Gee, what a SHOCK !!!
The IPCC (the libs bible on global warming WHEN it’s convenient for them !) also said that global warming hasn’t existed at all in the last 15 years. In fact, the 2000′s were the coolest decade in 60 years. Oops, no liberal wants to hear actual F-A-C-T-S, only more liberal bull$hit. Gosh, imagine that, that weather goes in cycles. Who knew ??? It may be 10-15 years cycles, it may be 50-100 cycles, or it may 500 or 1000 year cycles.
All along the way the libs keep saying that there “may” be GW. Why ? To keep the public scared, but most importantly to keep the GW funding dollars rollin’ on in baybee !!! A total fraud, and if they admit it deep down inside, they know it too. Imagine the ignorance of thinking that this planet that has existed for a billion years, or more, and was just fine for 99.99999999 % of that time, BUT now, somehow we’ve f’ed everything up in the past 20-30 years. Imagine the arrogance (or blatant stupidity) in actually believing that nonsense !!!!!
It’s just easier to believe the lie isn’t libs ?
As I said, Gore has nothing on Bernie Madoff in terms of a fraud perpetuated on U.S. citizens that has “earned him” hundreds of millions of dollars. Al belongs in the same jail cell next to Madoff.

  112. Abe Froeman says: Mar 15, 2010 8:17 PM

I don’t see why going green should ever be viewed as a bad thing.
Even if you don’t believe in global warming there are still some positives for going green.
    1. Resources are not unlimited! Yeah, maybe the world won’t be destroyed in armageddon, but there is a certain amount of oil/coal on this planet for us to use.
    2. It weakens the middle east. The only reason all of those middle eastern countries are relevant is because they have rich oil supplies that we buy for all of our cars and power. If all of the sudden we don’t need all that middle eastern oil, Iran is becomes once again a big worthless country.
The GOP loves to mention our national debt is going to ruin the world for our kids and future generations… how’s that going to work out if we’re going to paying Iran $500 for a barrel of oil? That sounds like a good plan.
And don’t give me the garbage about how we can drill in Alaska or the midwest if we got rid of all the reserves because our country is just a bunch of nimbys (“Not In My Back Yard”) People are always for drilling… just as long as it doesn’t effect them.
Its doesn’t have to be about Global Warming. How about it can once again be about America staying as the strongest country in the world. I just don’t see any downside to going green. I would much rather us design all of the new green technology and sell it to the world than to have China create a new car that runs on banana peels and sells it to Americans for $40,000 a pop.
Take control America….. or we can just argue about global warming.

  123. jimicos says: Mar 16, 2010 5:05 PM

I agree with nearly everything in the prior post. I still want to know what kind of cars Brady owns, though. Gotta love those Hollywood do-gooders who show up to hold signs for environmentalism and then climb into a Hummer limo when they’re done.
The one problem I have with your statement, footballisfun, is that there’s precious little proof that global warming (or climate change, whichever) is actually a result of greenhouse gases. Offer an opposing viewpoint and you’re shouted down or called an idiot. Ask someone to prove humans are causing this warming and they’ll just point to graphs. But that doesn’t prove causation.
Anyway, I agree. Going green is generally good. But it can be very costly, so I think it makes sense to get the most bang for your buck. Cash for clunkers was a prime example. Lots of money spent, very little improvement from a pollution standpoint. That was nothing more than a subsidy on the auto industry. It just had a green wrapper on it that made people feel good.
