Welcome to the UFL, Hartford Colonials

Last month, the UFL announced that fans (there was one?) would have the ability to vote on the new name of the New York Sentinels, who have been relocated to Hartford.

The choices were the Hartford Knights, the Hartford Guardians, the Hartford Travelers, and the Connecticut Yankees.

And the winner is team name goes to . . . the Hartford Colonials.

The UFL announced last night that a fifth option had been added to the list, and that it had emerged as the winner.

“We truly did listen to the public and the fans who will chant the Colonials name from the stands at Rentschler Field,” UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue said.  “Colonials was not among the four names available when we asked people to vote online, and that is why we added a fifth option to suggest an alternative and that is exactly what happened.  Colonials soon emerged as the overwhelming favorite.”

We were pulling for “Connecticut Yankees,” if only to see how swiftly the New York Yankees would have crushed the UFL for infringing on the name.

Meanwhile, fans in Sacramento now have a chance to vote on the team that has relocated from San Francisco.  The choices are:  Sacramento Condors, Sacramento Miners, Sacramento Pioneers, Sacramento Redwoods, Sacramento Senators, and Sacramento Sting.

We ask the Sacramento fans (there was one?) to go off the map like the folks in Hartford and come up with the Sacramento Mentos, since it it would match with the lame color schemes — and it would make the stadium experience more interesting, if they also serve Diet Coke.

Everyone loves to rip the UFL but I don’t think its fair. Can the average fan watch televised games? No; so how can you say no one watches when the opportunity is not even there.
Hey, baseball sucks and they get to have minor league. There is no good reason why the NFL can’t float a minor league; They just don’t want to and that is a shame. With a little help and cooperation I UFL cities could boast more revenue than most MLB cities.

You can’t infringe on the name Yankees! Where is your education, Florio? There are tons of instances of team names being used by all the sports. The CFL has something like 6 teams and has two teams named the Tiger-Cats….
Besides that, if you’ve ever read anything like…oh, I don’t know… something by Mark Twain… called “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” you’d realize that you sould like an uneducated buffoon when you slam that name, clearly not knowing that it would have been a literary reference.

I dont like the idea of the UFL taking teams out of football markets and putting them into ones without a prior football legacy.
I understand their thinking that because there are no other pro football teams in those markets that they will have a better chance of starting a following. For me personally though Im not going to root for a team from Toms River New Jersey for example.
If the UFL wants to get me and others like me as fans they need to bring the teams to cities that I already root for. Im from the suburbs of Philadelphia in New Jersey and Im a fan of all Philadelphia teams. I dont root for the Devils or the Nets just because their Jersey teams and I wouldn’t root for a New Jersey UFL team either.
But if the UFL came to Philly I would watch every game.
IMO I think the UFL needs to associate itself with markets that already have built in fan bases. So Just like the new AFL without the Philadelphia Souls I will not watch it until they bring a team to the city that Im use to rooting for. Im sure there are alot of other football fans in different cities that feel the same way.

UFL needs a slogan…UFL…it’s as good as preseason NFL, but with a root canal.
