Packers ink Australian punter

During the 2010 football season, some of the various “barbies” in the Land Down Under might have to make room for some bratwurst.

The Packers have signed Australian punter Chris Bryan to a three-year contract, according to Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Bryan has most recently played for the Collingwood Magpies of Australian Rules Football.  Other ARF alumni of in the NFL include Sav Rocca and Ben Graham.

We managed to find video of Bryan punting on January 17, 2010, with Johnny Cash’s The Wanderer as background music.

Based on the video, Bryan is left-footed.  Unless he was doing the Inigo Montoya thing.

1 of hopefully 5 punters they bring in too look at – at least 1 of them has to be better than the guy they had this season he was pathetic.

Those Magpies are badass! I believe Dion and the belmonts did “the wanderer” or maybe it was just Dion without the belmonts but it wasn’t Johnny Cash. Another one of your on purpose errors Florio?

Pretty significant hang time on most of those punts.
The music bed under the video was an awful choice. With over 500,000-1,000,000 titles to choose from someone couldn’t come up with a better choice of music to fit the video. Like something with “hang” or “kick” in it?

    good point superbowl…..
As an Aussie that cooks alot and has been to many BBQ’s………i can’t say i’ve ever seen a Bratwurst on a BBQ grill.
Shrimp on the bobbie? Lol……..Most people in Australia don’t know what a shrimp is!!! And Barbie is the correct term in Aussie slang.
I wish more Aussie punters would try their luck a bit earlier in there career, before their legs are on the decline. 70 yard punts (kicks in AFL) are not uncommon amongst the younger players with big kicking legs……

Besides, all I hear from the right is pissing and moaning. What can be done to better our country? That should be the bottom line. Instead it’s just a civil war amongst the Right and the Left.
Nothing will ever get done to make our country better as long as that goes on. Both sides are to blame.

  22. last starfighter says: Mar 16, 2010 6:56 PM

    Purple,
if Ryan Longwell is so wonderful, why did you guys just pick up another kicker? Just curious. Maybe it has something to do with his weak leg and inability to kick outside in winter.

  23. mnmaverick says: Mar 16, 2010 6:56 PM

He’s worth a look, the kickers from Australia always get a look from NFL teams. Reputation for strong legs from the ARFL.
More and more emphasis is put on kickers and opunters who can send the ball into the endzone and contr5ol field position.
That’s why the Vikes signed Ryse Loyd.

    Purple,
Ryan Longwell is a kicker. The Packers signed a punter. Not sure how much you know about football but they are two different positions. The kicker is used for kicking off , extra points and field goals. The punter is used for punting the ball on 4th downs.

  29. Bob Nelson says: Mar 16, 2010 7:16 PM

Again the famous world wide scouting staff of the Green Bay Packers has found a possible player.
It will be up to the coaching staff to get him up to NFL standards. It will be some time before we learn enough about his ability.
The Packers are well known for giving players a chance as long as they have a green card.
This guy is willing to forgo his Austrailian Football season for a chance to play for the Green Bay Packers.
Haven’t heard anything from the Packer Backers Down Under fan site yet. But if he can make marks from outside 50 meters in ARF then he has a chance to make it in the NFL.

  30. PULL&SEAL says: Mar 16, 2010 7:17 PM

another bold move by Tedward – not that we need a CB or linemen or anything…

  33. Beer Cheese Soup says: Mar 16, 2010 7:34 PM

The last time Ted signed an international punter, he turned out to be one of the best in the NFL. Of course, that wasn’t until after he cut him and signed Derrick “Shank” Frost one week after training camp, but he’s Ted, he’s not exactly known for recognizing talent or making wise decisions.
That being said, I like this move. Dude has some serious leg, an Aussie attitude to match, and best of all, he’s hungry and looking to prove himself. He should by all indications be able to beat out Kapinos, and after that, the sky is rather literally the limit.
Now taking bets as to which team he ends up on after Ted cuts him too…

  34. bonecity7 says: Mar 16, 2010 7:39 PM

By the way, yes the Packers made a mistake by getting rid of Longwell but at least the Packers didn’t trade a away a bunch of draft picks and players for a so-so running back, helping the other team win 3 Super Bowls!
Remember, Viking Fans, Hershel Walker for (unless, of course, you are one of the many bandwagon fans):
    Dallas Cowboys received
    LB Jesse Solomon

RB Darrin Nelson (traded to San Diego after he refused to report to Dallas)
    DE Alex Stewart

Minnesota’s 6th round pick in 1990 (158) (traded to New Orleans, who drafted James Williams)

    Yes, PURPLE???

Come on vikings fans your future looks bright. Favre will jerk your beloved franchise around till after training camp again. If he comes back the annual chest thumping fans will proclaim this is our year. If he decides not to comeback will you proclaim TJ or Sage as the 2nd coming of Montana? Just to make yourselves feel less hurt that Favre just bent you over. Your coach will hold Peterson accountable for his fumbles except for gametime. Harvin will continue to have migraines at the most convienent times. The sisters will continue to play with the legal system. The vikings will do well enough to get your hopes up then crush them as usual. Then you will spend all offseason whining about how you got screwed by the nfl or the refs. The real diehard fans will join forces and attend a “save the vikes” rally at the capitial,All 30 of them.

Sometimes the ineptitude of my fan base astounds me when they lack the intelligence or astuteness to realize the PACKERS DON’T HAVE A PUNTER ON THEIR ROSTER!
That and any signing of some no-name guy provokes “great signing Teddy” (oozing with sarcasm) as if these types of players are going to make the roster or aren’t training camp legs/arms/practice squad guys.

As an Australian Packer fan this is pretty cool News, even if he is a magpie. The Karma is good. Aussie national colours are green and gold. The magpies are run by Eddie Maguire who is also a TV personality in Australia. When his network showed NFL games in the 90′s Eddie was the host and the Packers went to the superbowl both seasons. The owners of that network are the Packer family.
By the way the magpies have the worst fans in world sport and their side has the worst karma. How does a 1-13 record in the last 50 years in the AFL’s championship game along with countless post season burn outs sound. You are either human or a magpie fan.

  64. botchedextrapoint says: Mar 17, 2010 4:43 AM

I’ll be interested to see how the new breed of Aussie punter goes. Sav and Ben were from a time when the spiral punt and long kicks were still a part of the game but the AFL has changed heaps in the last 5 years. It is now about low, hard, short and accurate kicks. The spiral has died out. They may be slightly better directional punters than the older players but I will be interested to see if he can give the ball some air when he needs to. Anyway a game when you have to punt the ball accurately 35 – 50 yards, under pressure 20 -30 times a game has to be good training to be an NFL punter

How funny is it that every single story about the packers or vikings brings out the same idiots who say the same stupid stuff over and over. I feel dumber for reading. Being a vikes and pack fan, I say why don’t both sides stfu and stick to stories about your own team.

I just stopped reading right there.
    Are you serious?
Assuming that wasn’t a serious typo, let me guess a few other things about you:
    Your Mom’s a Hatfield, your Dad’s a McCoy?
You like both the Red Sox AND Yankees?
You consider yourself a dog AND cat person?
You think both the North and South should’ve won the Civil War?
You’re equally comfortable loving men or women?
You can’t make up your mind about which socks to wear, so you wear one of each color?
You wear a belt AND suspenders?
    You wear contacts AND glasses?
    You eat with a SPORK?
    You vote Rebuplicrat?
You order chocolate-vanilla twist ice cream cones?
    You’re a he-she?
    You wear a mullet?
You are such a devoted, r-tarded Bratt lover that you’d go so far as to publicly profess your love for two inherently mutually-exclusive things?
    Your name is Brad Childress?
Grow a spine and pick a team, Favre-ophile.
A house divided against itself cannot stand.

There is something really really wrong with a guy that simply cannot let go of his repeated use of gay slang and incessant use of gay innuendo. Chickenhead…this is obviously a subject that is by far more interesting to you than football. I think you would be happier (fulfilled) on another site. Good luck out there.

That’s great–I’ve been telling Fagnerd the exact same thing for well over a year now:
His obsession with homo-erotic references and poop/bodily fluids goes well beyond any standard, reasonable trash-talk.
    It’s CONSTANT!!
I honestly think he needs to sort through all those feelings of his, and go find the proper venue to sort them out.
    ChickenFagnerd,
It’s been made evident to all of us that you are trying your hardest to suppress some deep, dark, yucky, conflicted feelings about men (and, apparently, chickens), and we pity you for that–but this is NOT the place for that sort of, um, self-discovery, okay?
Your specific, demented pathologies, obsessions, fetishes and perversions are rearing their ugly little heads more and more during casual football conversations, and it’s affecting the rest of us, negatively.
    So consider this an intervention.
Please get yourself some help, or at least find the appropriate website. I’m sure there are plenty that will even have the horn-sucking Viking connection you would enjoy so much.
    Good luck with all that.

You may want to try looking up the definition of homophobe.
I have no problems with homosexuals, but it sure strikes a lot of nerves on this site, doesn’t it?
I love the reactions I get from it.

Words of wisdom from good ol’ Philtration! Haven’t heard much from him since – when was it – oh, yeah, after the first game last season! Well, no matter how duh Bears suck, you can still have a little joy by hatin’ the for Pack another year. It’s always better to be getting insults from fans of a team that has some world championships to its credit than from those whose club is still searching for “the last piece of the puzzle” for the fiftieth year in a row.

By the way the magpies have the worst fans in world sport and their side has the worst karma. How does a 1-13 record in the last 50 years in the AFL’s championship game along with countless post season burn outs sound. You are either human or a magpie fan.

    1. I am an Australian that has spent my entire life hating the magpies and the last 22 year following the Packers. NFL season starts when the Aussie season finishes. So I end up with nearly year round football
    2. Aussie rules is an endurance sport where athletes can run up to 16km in the course of 1 1/2 hours of game time. Not fast enough or big enough for the NFL.
