Anderson gets $7.5 million over two years

If Arizona’s aggressive pursuit of quarterbacks this offseason didn’t get Matt Leinart’s attention, Derek Anderson’s contract will.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Anderson will get $7.25 million over the next two years.  $3.25 million is guaranteed and Anderson could make $18.25 million if he reached every incentive.  (Wow.)

That’s the kind of money you get to start second on the depth chart, with a legitimate chance to rise.  It’s $1 million more in base salary than David Carr saw, which makes sense considering Arizona’s quarterback position is more available.

Leinart still looks like the favorite to start in Week One, but it wouldn’t be a shock to see Anderson starting before Week Ten.

There have been plenty of whispers the Cardinals aren’t fully on board with Leinart as the team’s quarterback of the future, and the team has backed those rumors up this offseason.

OMG AZ is going down in a ball of flames….How do you pay big money to a guy that looked like he could not be the 3rd QB on an arena team?
Good move… really I mean that

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAHA…how does one of the WORST qb’s in the league pull in $18.25 mill…

Backup QB is the best position in football, you get millions of dollars to hold a clipboard and workout.

I think you need to stop fanning the smoke of a fire that doesn’t exist. Whiz has always said that he will never out right give someone the starting job unless they have been to a few pro bowls… since matt hasn’t had a chance to start consistently whiz can’t just name him the starter. but i think matt will prove this year that he was the right pick at number ten and will guarantee the another division title. i think matt has shown the work ethic this year and last year that is needed. also, the titans game last year indicates that he can do it. he had NO snaps with the first team in practice and still performed very well and just lost on a tough 4th quarter drive out of his control. So i think whiz is just covering his bases like any smart coach!

Is there another Derek Anderson out there that is a QB that we don’t know about? WOW is right….

Leinart will have to start since he was their #1 pick, but once he falters and Anderson get’s in that is it.
Leinart couldn’t backup a VW let alone another QB.

Holy crap. As a Niner fan, I cannot believe how shocked I am to read above comment. First time in a long time that I hear of a QB spot more available than Alex Smith’s…pinch me because I think Gregg and I are dreaming, or both Alex and Matt might be riding the pine (I hope not for Alex, but…).

  23. HardHat says: Mar 17, 2010 3:43 PM

Derek Anderson’s signing and contract spells the end for ol’ Matty Boi Leinart. And thank God for that!
Leinart is simply awful. I’ve seen pretty much every snap he’s taken for Arizona in the past 4 seasons, and he has a slow release, piss-poor accuracy, weak arm, terrible footwork, can’t read an NFL defense, and couldn’t even manage to memorize his own offensive playbook.
Sure, Leinart still has a dwindling few die-hard USC homies that talk him up on the net, but all they have to point to is his “glorious” effort in a loss to the TN Titans… a game in which all he did was check down, and fail to throw a touchdown versus the 31st-ranked pass defense in the NFL.
Arizona’s only scores vs the Titans were on big run plays by Beanie and Hightower and by the special teams running back a punt.
With all of Leinart’s 3-and-outs in the 4th quarter, the Arizona defense was completely gassed by the end of the game. Not their fault they finally gave up a TD to Vince Young. Had Leinart converted a single 1st down in the 4th quarter, the game would have been won. But he refused to throw anything more than a 3 yard pass.
Leinart probably lacked the balls because he was an interception machine all season (and his whole career, for that matter). In this past season, he almost blew huge 4th quarter leads to the Rams, Bears, & Jaguars… the dregs of the NFL.
Leinart will go down in history as the biggest 1st round QB bust since Ryan Leaf. Write it down!

I guess you can chalk up one more team under the category of teams that don’t think Vick can throw.
That is a lot of money for Derek Anderson. I wonder if he will complain that the fans in Arizona don’t deserve a winner?

  25. braindead says: Mar 17, 2010 3:49 PM

Are the Cards on the Brown’s schedule this year? Oh, I hope so, and I hope it’s in Cleveland. Get ready for the “battery toss” Derek, if you come to C-Town

And then Leinart starting again by Week Eleven.
Anderson’s garbino. If it wasn’t for Jose Mesa, he’d be public enemy number 1 in Cleveland.

  27. southernboi727 says: Mar 17, 2010 4:00 PM

Is this now the going rate for a QB with just some decent experience? Wow! And they say the economy is still in bad shape.

  28. el_dude00 says: Mar 17, 2010 4:03 PM

I don’t see what the big deal is in regards to Anderson. He out played the other QBs in Cleveland behind an awful line and throwing to receivers who were alergic to catching the ball.
If he doesn’t work out, paying a former pro-bowl qb 3.25 mil to be a back up is not a bad deal.
If I’m Matt Leinart (and thankfully I’m not) I’m pissed off right now though.

  29. jsdarkman says: Mar 17, 2010 4:03 PM

Andy they couldn’t find any more money for Boldin…. But just giving it away to DA. Wow!

Funny post, dude. I never thought anyone would be excited about seeing DA tripping into a huddle…at least on a team they were rooting for.

Wait a minute- Seneca Wallace is white? Um……no. He is the also the only QB on this list never to be named a starter for reasons other than injury.
    Let’s see…..
Delhomme- super bowl and pro bowl
    Cutler- pro bowl
Orton- 62% completion rate last year, 21 to 12 td to int.
    Anderson- Pro Bowl
Wallace- 14 starts in 8 years, all due to injury
Number of black Qb’s in top 1o prospects for this year- 0
You’re right, the black QB is definitely the future of the NFL
