Despite some Twitter entries suggesting that Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson has gone to Philly and left with a new contract, we’re told that Jackson has not yet obtained a new contract from the Eagles.
Jackson is eligible for an extension because he has completed two NFL seasons. Unlike other young players whom the Eagles have extended early in their years before they became stars, Jackson already is a star.
And so if they want to do a new deal it won’t be cheap. Which makes us think that they’ll be dragging their feet on this one.
there idiots not to sign him a good deal he was a game changer on offense this year and helped on donovan alot but i wud be totally happy with them not signing him n he ends up miami yeaaaaaaa
Ya think there’s a timing correlation with Curtis getting cut? The only concern for the brass is whether or not Jackson can stay healthy. Maybe they wait until mid-season to make sure he doesn’t blow out a knee or something. He certainly deserves at least what Maclin makes.
Give him a contract like Avant’s. Pay him up front this year while there’s no slary cap.
Pay the man..most deserved one in Philly..hes a beast a.k.a. The Silencer
Maybe a cheesesteak shop should send some cheesesteaks to Lincoln Financial and Eagles personal with “PAY THE MAN” written in slices of melted cheese!!!
I’d think they’d do it now since they cut a bunch of veterans within the past couple weeks, particularly the past couple days. I’d think they’d do the same for Stewart Bradley as well.
Bad idea by both sides. Exhibit A: Anquan Boldin. He re-upped early, got a bunch of up-front cash followed reasonable and cap-friendly salaries. Win/win for everyone, right? Wrong. Boldin continued to play at a high level, and within 2 years, was whining like a little bitch (unlike the warrior he is on the field) about his deal. Nobody put a gun to his head, and he got a huge 8-figure payday up front. If the Iggles re-up Jackson this early, and he continues to perform at a high level and salaries continue to spiral upwards at out-of-control rates, then he’ll be singing the same tune sooner than later.
I say they all should play under 1-year deals. It would be better for all involved, especially the fans, who have to pay for all these McMansions, pimped-out Escalades, body guards, scads of $1′s to “make it rain”, unemployed entourages, etc. Everybody would play like it’s “contract year”, because it always would be. No more signing a fat deal then going in the tank, as happens too often.
Oh yeah.. looks like nobody wants McNuggets OR Vick. Looks like another losing season in Philly.
I’ll be like swallowing an avacado pit for Joe Banner.
Damn Philly FO. If there’s one man in Philly who deserves a good, long-term contract, it’s Jackson. PAY THE MAN! He’s more than proven himself.
Screw Draggin their feet hes under contract for 2 more years so unless they are just doing an extension to his contract and not replacing his salary for the seasons hes already under contract they should wait till atleast this season is over.
I think it sets a bad presedence to pay a guy 2 years into their rookie contract. 3 years is a perfect time to do it because they will get him under contract a year before hes done his orginal deal and he would have played out over 50% of it.
Also signing him now to an extension means he gets his signing bonus now too. Which could mean in a few years from now he might forget about how much money he was paid.
I hope its either just an extension or they decide to hold off on working a deal out until mid season at the earliest.
He signed his contract in July 08. I mean come on his contract isnt even 2 years old yet.
He has been in the league for two years and they are talking contract extension already. Isn’t this the type of thing that got them in trouble with Andrews?
I know the Eagles have a history of signing young players to extensions, but after only two years. I would guess that if they sign him to an extension now, that he will come back in two years and want even more money if he continues to perform at a high level.
But, they finally have some receivers in Philadelphia and it might be a good idea to keep them happy. The last good receiver they had was TO and look at what kind of head case he was. They better keep McNabb happy, because according to PFT Vick can’t throw……
Whiskeytangofoxtrot says:

I agree that no one wants Vick or McNabb and i am usually one of the first to get on Eagles front office for not doing as much as they could, but to say another losing season in philly ???
What have they had , 1 losing season in last decade ( 2005 ). Com ‘on dude the Eagles go 10 -6 or 11 – 5 every year. Im just as tired as the next Eagles fan of seeing them lose in the NFC champoinship games but don’t say here comes another losing year.
Whiskeytango, you do realize they went 11-5 last year, right?
That’s pretty far from a losing season.
If Desean says the deal is done, its done. I’m not sure its an extension or more money this year.
Its stories like this one, that start controversy. I havent heard anything about Desean holding out for a bigger contract or anything like that, so who cares if he gets an extension this year or not. I think certain people in the media just cant wait for Desean to blow up or say something that might offend another teammate so they can have something to hate on.
Ummmmm……
1. Jackson had twitter entries about coming to Philly for more “bread”: he was scheduled for a bout of autograph signing. Not a contract renegotiation.
2. As a player entering his third year, the terms of the CBA (or lack thereof) dictate that he cannot make more than 30% of his current contract. Weird loophole but it basically means he’s not able to get a payout even if the Eagles wanted to give him one.
3. Neither he nor Rosenhaus have made any real mention of looking for a raise (yet).
And anyone who says a 3rd year player is underpaid needs to get a grip. He’s a star, he’s young, they’ll do a deal, but no one is screwing anyone over so the Eagles fan conspiracy theorists can crawl back into their foil-lined holes.
And Les Bowen and Florio should both be publicly flogged for this poorly researched “breaking news” that never was nor could ever be.
Florio, you’re so obsessed with slamming the Eagles for locking up young players early in their carreers that you’ve missed the real story in Philly where contract extensions are concerned: the Eagles continue to say that McNabb is their QB, but they haven’t extendd him.
Jackson has two years left on his contract. Mcnabb only has one year left on his.
why should they redo his deal this early?? its not like they wont give him a new contract in a year or two anyway why does it have to be done right now??
D-Jac is an exciting player to watch, but he’s just two years into his contract, and he’s about the size of the women Roethlisburger likes to fondle, let it play out and if next year, he doesn’t get hurt, continues to perform at a high level, then give him the extension that will piss him off in 2 years.
They should make him take some English classes first. Dude is an idiot, but a great player.
With all the money they’ve freed up lately, I bet a deal gets done soon. They can’t afford NOT to.
I would hope that they would include escalator clauses, the guys been great but only for 2 years. And when you’re dealing with Jewsenhaus, with his past for the Eagles, I’d be careful. That guy is no good for football.
With Kenny Phillips coming back next season and the signing of Antrelle Rolle you can expect Desean Jackson to get lit the fk up at least twice a game. All that being said, pay the man he’s def worth it. Home run threat everytime he gets the ball.
Met him at an autograph signing last year. Dude, is a straight up jerk! Great player, terrible person
DJ deserves to break the bank !
Whoever originally wrote the article that PFT is referring to is a complete idiot. He never went to Philly for a contract. He tweeted about going to Philly to get some bread because he was going to make an appearance and sign autographs.
Then he tweeted about flying back richer because he got paid for doing the autograph session. What a pathetic job of journalism by the Philly media once again.
This just has to sting they ass of Desean.
Actually he just wanted some cheesesteak rolls.
still waiting for him to ‘sting they ass.’ LOL Philly is a joke.
Keith Davis,
Your comments show what a simpleton you must be.
Philly remains one of the stingiest franchises in the league after of course AZ & Tampa & Cincy. Who typically time extensions to screw their players out of bigger money down the road. That may not work in this case.
There is a reason McNabb never got any real wide receiver help during the prime of his career.
Desean Jackson by the numbers:
Base Salary 2008 – $295,000
Signing Bonus 2008 – $1,353,000
Base Salary 2009 – $385,000
Other (Incentive) Bonus – $398,615
In 2009 Jacskon was 10th in receiving yards (1,156); Tied for 4th in TD’s with 9; Tied for 24th with 62 Receptions and Tied for 1st with 2 Punt Return TD’s
There are several arguements at play here, the first being that rookies should not be signed to astronomical contracts, being that Jackson was the 49th pick of the 2008 Draft (2nd round) his contract was just about right with the signing bonus….what could be made up on and maybe what should be revisited is the escalator bonuses for performance for rookies contracts….this protects the team from busts but also rewards top performers such as Jackson.
Redo escalators for his 3rd and 4th year of the contract and then give him the big contract if his numbers prove out after the 2010 season.
