Report: 49ers begin to fill McCloughan's duties

49ers G.M. Scot McCloughan’s story has yet to be told.

What is clear after Wednesday night’s stunning report from the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that McCloughan could be on the outs is that changes are afoot in San Francisco.  Immediately.

Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News writes that the team is making
short-term adjustments in front-office structure” in order to fill McCloughan’s duties.

McCloughan’s agent said his client would not be resigning.  But Kawakami states what has quickly become apparent.  McCloughan isn’t likely to run San Francisco’s draft either.

“It seems pretty
clear that McCloughan is out or on his way out,” Kawakami writes.

The 49ers have officially remained silent on the issue, but that has to change Thursday.

UPDATE: Here’s a scary, speculative thought for 49ers fans: Jed York as football czar?

    You’re welcome.

I suspect little Jed York is taking a page from across the bay ( Dead Al )

  3. StevieMo says: Mar 18, 2010 1:58 PM

Just a pathetic organization which consistently hires inexperienced and unqualified people (Donahue, Erickson, Nolan, McCloughan, Singletary and a score of offensive coordinators) to do its most important work. The Yorks are buffoons, and they have murdered what was one of the great sports franchises of all-time.

So does this mean Jed and one of the non-football guys get to run an NFL draft? If so, my prediction is worst draft ever, maybe Tebow and Mays in the first round. Or worse yet, package those picks to move up to top five for Clausen.

  5. MROlmo says: Mar 18, 2010 2:06 PM

If this has anything to do with Tebow , crosses, or blessings in this years draft I hope Sing cracks his own nuts.

49ers have the worst ownership pro football.

Who makes front office changes a month before the draft? What did 49er fans do to deserve the York family….as they say in Baltimore….Eddie…Eddie…Eddie

  8. raiders177 says: Mar 18, 2010 2:14 PM

Well, this isn’t good. It looked like they were just turning things around with their front office.

  9. Dolphinatic says: Mar 18, 2010 2:17 PM

First Eddie Debartolo and now this …. Evidently Singletary has been out dic*ed in the franchise and he didn’t even have a chance to drop his pants this time.

They won’t fire him until after the draft. He knows too many secrets. If they let him go, he can consult with other teams

49er Fans have put up with a great deal of pardon my french BS for the past 15 years since we were used to winning titles and kicking A. Just as we are getting excited about two high draft picks and an improving offense we hear something like this? Come on people, get your acts together … Joe and Jerry, we are all behind you for the revolution boys, unleash Ronnie and Charles and lets get this thing fixed!

  12. counsel says: Mar 18, 2010 2:33 PM

No basis or special knowledge here, but known details all match a potential personal or medical issue that requires him to take some time off; the meetings, the reassigning of duties, the non-comment by the niners, the fact he’s not resigning.

  14. OscarMooseFarmer says: Mar 18, 2010 2:37 PM

On the one hand Jed is supposed to be a bright young guy, so maybe he would fair alot better then Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder…But then again on the other hand if he installs himself as the “czar” he obviously isn’t a bright young man and then my Niners are doomed.
This could also be a part of a plan to go after someone like Gruden or Cowher…but that wouldn’t make sense of any of this.
I’m hoping he is looking to hire a certain uncle of his…then we could go back to having the successful maffia style FO of years passed.
Actually I’m just hoping he hires SOMEBODY

  15. raidresnation says: Mar 18, 2010 2:41 PM

    Jed York = Jed Clampett..

Medical? Family? Legal problems? Addiction? Psychiatric?
It could be a long time before the truth is known.

Jed York taking over is anything but scary.

  18. Henchman #24 says: Mar 18, 2010 2:51 PM

As counsel said, this sounds like a personal/medical issue. I really hope so, I have some faith in McCloughan’s abilities as a talent evaluator.
He’s not been all that bad, SF was pretty damned competitive in most of their games. They’re a few players away from being extremely competitive, I think, and that’s mostly due to McCloughan. They’re a good pass rusher away from being a great defense, and the major needs on offense are right tackle and continuity.
If this is the Yorks forcing their hand, I give up on them. Who in their right mind runs off their GM five weeks before the draft?

Exactly! It’s hilarious that everyone automatically jumps to the conclusion that this is something the 49ers/Yorks instigated. Gotta love a good conspiracy theory.

Alot bums make ignorant comments but everyone knows we were a Addai td pass and a Farve miracle away from playoffs , This is a huge syep to restoring sanity to this team.He kept #11 smith around way long he gotta go . Saints went 8-8 the year b4 Superbowl . SF 8-8. So Quit hatin. Sour raiders fans worry bout your own team. They always draft the wrong guy ! Thanks for Crabtree lmao , 48 catches for 695 , DHB’ust, 9 rec. 124 yards ya good job . Bye Bye Scott !

So, Jed has decided he needs to be Jerry Jones (at least according to some reports) and the 49ers who were finally starting to recover from the salary-cap, lousy-drafting, free-agent binge stupidity of the 1990s and the Donahue era of complete wankery are going to end up right back on the bottom again…
I’m so glad we’ve got five superbowls under our belt. Because until we find another Walsh to lead us out of DeBartolo/York stupidity it’s going to hell…
