Joey Porter picks the Cardinals

Well, here’s something for Darnell Dockett to celebrate.

Free agent linebacker Joey Porter has agreed to a three-year contract with the Cardinals, according Darren Urban of the team’s official website.

Porter wrapped up a visit with the Redskins Friday, but he wanted to play near the West Coast and Arizona had a bigger need for an outside pass rusher. Porter should start for the Cardinals.

It’s questionable how much Porter has left in the tank, and the signing could backfire quickly. But the move is already popular in the locker room. Dockett said 12 days ago that Porter is all he wanted for Christmas and he’s quickly chimed in on the move:

“BIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDGANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG!!Yeaaaaaaaaaaaahh ohhhh leeeeettttttssss DOOOO IT!,” Dockett tweeted.

We think he likes it.

UPDATE: ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Cardinals will pay Porter $17.5 million over three years, with a max value of $24.5 million.  Depending on the structure, that looks like a panicked deal that won’t go well for Arizona.

  1. Congrats ARI. You got a great one. The 10-12 sacks he’ll get will really make up for the RBs running over him and the TEs blowing past him. Hey, but all anyone will see is the sack number. Good luck with a top 5 pick next year.

  2. Can’t wait to listen to that loud mouth all season. Perfect fit for the Arizona ‘Tards. Hey Joey, you got some drool on your chin.

  3. Joey Porter might give Cardinals linebacking corps a much needed shot in the ass.

  4. Thank you Bruce Allen! An aging, problem-child player leaves Redskin Park without a $100m contract. Football decisions by football people. Still hard to think it’s real. Keep it up, Bruce! Hail!

  5. J Peezy + Fitzgerald and the Cardinals? Could the Red birds finally be sporting an attitude? Porter can make a team better just by kicking an opposing player’s a$$ during pre-game warmups. I smell 16 more sacks, a Cards return to the Super Bowl, and Porter retiring with his 2nd Ring. I would love to see my 6th favorite all-time Steelers outside linebacker go out with a bang.

  6. YAY!!!!!!! I like it, too!!!! No one, not even Joey, knows exactly what he’s got left in the tank, but Whis understands Joey–and it sounds like Dockett does, too. I’m glad he’s found a place where they get him and want him and he’ll be with old friends. Good for him!!!

  7. Hmmmm, Karlos Dansby is like 5X the player that Porter is at this point. This is not something to get excited about.

  8. This is a guy who almost retired a couple years ago because of nagging back problems. Hope they didn’t give this fool too much cash.

JUST WATCH OUT FOR THE STDs

  10. Bad move for the Cardinals. Porter has not much left in the tank. He’ll get them 8-10 sacks but is a liability against the run and can’t cover a TE.
In addition, they’ll get a huge distraction once they (will) discover that they didn’t get the player they wanted to get. He even refused to come off the field when he was in Miami.

  11. Its nice to see free agents choosing to play for the Cards. This is not the same organization from years past.
And for all you Dolphin fans who are ragging on the Cards…your owner is Mark Anthony, you have had 1 mildly successful season in the last decade, and if it weren’t for the Bills you would be the blueprint for failure in the AFC East.

  12. I’ll take Dockett’s word for it. He’s there on the field and is actually in the league.
    Cards D got better.
Those who don’t agree…you may be right. But if Porter sacks your favorite team’s qb this year….cards fans like me will be here to remind you.

  13. Pretty big money for a guy who turns 33 later this month. I wonder how much of it is guaranteed.

  14. Wow. If they were paying him $1.5 million a year that’d be one thing… but $17.5 million?
He’s a bad guy for the locker room and a waste of cash.

  15. Porter’s a puke. Burnum’s right, except for the 8 to 10 sacks part.
He isn’t coming close to that.

  16. peezy wont get double digit sacks, he is all bark and no bite. nice move arizona, dumbasses!

  17. When Peezy plays he plays hard. I wish him well, and I hope you get a good season out of him.

  18. Congrats to Joey…and the Cards.I still cant believe how fast the years went by… I can still remember Joey on the sidelines as a rookie and Lloyd still out on the field..i used to say theres the next Greg Lloyd…….. Hard to believe its been that long ago.
Have yall seen Lloyd?? He still got the body he could suit up tomorrow!

  19. I would love to see my 6th favorite all-time Steelers outside linebacker go out with a bang.
really ItalianArmyGuy… 6th favorite outside lb.. Little in depth

  20. I’m glad he went out west, hopefully we’ll never hear about him again. I knew the Jets wouldnt dare be dumb enough to think about signing him but I feel much better now that he’s officially draining someone elses salary cap.

  21. Any1 remember the Jets-Dolphins game where Joey and Kerry were about to take each other’s clothes off? LMAO Put THE CARDINALS ON HARD KNOCKS PLEASE!!!

  22. Porter was going to make less with Miami and still got cut. This contract is a joke. He has very little left. Thanks for trading us Dansby for Porter.

  23. Perhaps his visit to Ashburn prompted the Cardinals to give him a little more green. It sure seemed to work for Green Bay tackle Chad Clifton. And Tony Pashos, Casey Wiegmann, Larry Foote.
Players agents are going crazy! “The Redskins would like to visit with you, Your going to get paid!!!
Please! Nicca here’s a Mil ..take it or Dulles airport is right down the road.
Bruce Allen. Keep bringing them in. And keep sending them out!

  24. Good luck to him and the Cardinals. I appreciate his contributions to the Dolphins, but sadly, he really became a problem for the coaching staff and really acted without class on his way out. Oh well, we knew who he was coming in, and he was true to form. Except for one season in which he was totally outstanding, his time in Miami was a huge disapointment.

  25. You would be surprised at how much a happy player produces. All you guys talking about how bad a player he is, I hope your right.

  26. Never has a man with such average talent made so much money thanks to being his own public relations machine.
The Cardinals look nothing like they did in 2008 and yet, they’ll still likely win the west.

  27. The Cards decline began with the exit of Kurt Warner, and just hit the accelerator with the arrival of Porter. No division championship this year AZ.

  28. Good ridance. He couldn’t sack Tom Brady and Peyton!!!! How’s he going to sack Romo, Eli, Cutler, Favre, and BREES?!?!?!
Besides, he will implode the locker room like he always does.
    17 mil? Thats robbery!

  29. It seems he got too much depending on how much of it is guaranteed. Three years is too much of a commitment. Two at the very most. If he can stay healthy he will pay dividends and should fit in as well as Dansby did especially during the Pendegast defenses prior to last season. Also Bertrand Berry is now retired and remained a reliable, above average pass rusher in in his older age. The Cards relied on schemes last year by rushing 5 or 6. I still have nightmares about ‘dem Saints dismantling of the Cards in the playoffs.

  30. So who is going to stop Frank Gore and Steven jackson when they run to that side of the field the entire game now?
    Also Cardnials lose:
    Kurt Warner
    Carlos Dansby
    Antrell Rolle
    Bertrand Berry
    Cardinals gain:
    Kerry Rhodes
    Derek Anderson
    Joey Porter
I would still say you ahve taken a step or two backwards bird fans so relax for a minute. Once Mr. Lineart can prove he can spend a couple hours away from doing coke and bong hits off a co-eds ass, yes I am jealouse, and actaully win football games then you can get excited that you perpetually win the worst division in footbal.

  31. Good job overpaying for another MOUTH AZ!
As you can see, Mr. Dockett has quite a big one but Mr. Porter takes it to a whole new level — hell, you could fit Noah’s Ark in that thing!

Wow, if that isnt the pot calling the kettle black. Miami is on their way up. Warner is gone, ARI is now the BUF of the NFC West.

  33. Oh no that is just silly how do you let Dansby walk away and you pick up this clown for dang near the same money?
That is not good Porter sucked, he might have made a big play in the past but no more. He didn’t make a memorable play all last season. How do you go a whole damn game and not get a tackle??

  34. So much for the prophets of doom. Darnell Docket, who knows more about football than anyone on the board is happy about it. I’m glad for Peezy. He loves to play. I wonder who will be on the other side? Why Clark Haggins! He played for the Steelers too!
    GO STEELERS!

  35. In everyday life I would hate to see an enemy of mine get cancer because I’m not shallow and actually would feel bad, but in football I will sit back, laugh my arse off and sit back and watch the Cardinals suffer from a stupid decision like this one. He’s not worth that money.

  36. did they really pay that much for him? hahahahahahahahahahahaha. that is horrible. did he have a gun in the negotiations? holy sh*t that is bad.

  37. Imma Skins fan and Im kinda glad we didn’t sign him because it woulda been a mess with him and Levi Jones in the same lockeroom I believe you said it was Haynesworth he would have problems with Florio you need to do your damn homework before you take cheap shots at my team

  38. “I’ll take Dockett’s word for it. He’s there on the field and is actually in the league.”
And how many players make good personnel evaluators?

“4skins lose out on another prospect. i agree…pick the winner…LMAO.”
What do you know, the only dumb ass to think this is a bad move for the Skins is some dumb ass cowgurl fan. I love that somehow some way boysroll’s dumb shit self figures out a way to hate on America’s real team.

  41. Sorry, meant Rosenthal. I need to pay more attention to the writer these days. Although, Rosenthal has quickly adopted Florio’s superior tone and its hard to differentiate you two at times.

  42. He’s averaging roughly $5.8mil a year, calm down with the Cardinals hate, that’s not all that expensive for a double digit sack rusher.

  43. Hey LGC, newsflash buddy, wanna know why we’ve got a better chance at making the playoffs next year? because we have a defense thats improving, we’ve got the two headed R&R express for our run game, and best of all, we’ve got an up and coming QB that will stun plenty really soon. And lets take a look at what u got for the next season, lost Karlos Dansby, lost Antrel Rolle, lost Bertrand Berry, and most importantly, the piece that was keeping u guys in contention, Mr.Kurt Warner. Lets’ see, you’ve added a no good free safety that cant tackle nor read coverages, and you got a washed up OLB that cant cover the run, or the TE worth jack crap, and Derek Anderson who is a one year wonder. Face it man, you’re sh1t outta luck next year, haha. Ten to One says that u guys will finish 3rd in your division while us, the “Blueprint for failure”, will make the wildcard with a Second place. So next time u talk to a fin fan, make sure u have a right idea of whats in store for both of our teams futures…. O almost forgot. Superbowls: MIA-2 AZ-0

  45. *Sarcasm on*
As a Skins fan I am very disappointed he chose the sorry ass Cardinals over my Skins. Reading this my day is completely ruined.
    *Sarcasm off*

  46. I wish Joey all the best. Too bad he had to sign with the biggest loser franchise in the NFL.
Even the Redskins would have been a step up. It must be about being close to family. It sure has nothing to do with a team on the rise.
    Enjoy your 6-10 season Joey.

  47. aram42297- you keep thinking this will help your team. I will laugh when the Niners and Seahawks sweep the ‘Tards, and I might literally die of laughter if the rams get 1 of 2 from you… Your teams “glory days” of winning the division and one NFC championship (whoopie) are over. In 2-3 years don’t be surprised to see your team with a 1-9 pick in the draft.
