Report: UFL wants NFL to invest

Last month we mentioned that rumors were flying in the pro football world that the NFL recently tried to buy the UFL. The NFL denied that it had done so.

Today Chris Mortensen of ESPN has a report saying that the UFL wants the NFL to become an investor.

According to Mortensen, the latest proposal from the UFL is to sell a 30 percent stake to the NFL. But that proposal has not reached a point where it will be discussed at next week’s NFL owners’ meeting.

Mortensen writes that sources disagree on whether a deal is likely or not.

Although Mortensen writes that there’s no word on how much the UFL would expect the NFL to pay for a 30 percent stake, the rumors we passed along last month were that the NFL offered $50 million for 51 percent of the one-year-old minor league, and the UFL responded by offering 49 percent for $49 million.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, who said last month that the rumor of the NFL trying to buy the UFL was “flat wrong,” told Mortensen, “We decline to comment.”

I hope the NFL does invest. With a pending lockout do they really want another league, however small, floating around?

So the NFL wants to have control of the UFL, if they want 51%
The UFL wants to still have control if they counteroffered 49%
In the end, this doesn’t sound like its about money, its about control.
If the UFL wants cash from the NFL, its going to have to give up power in the form of 51%
Why would the NFL want to that much money into a venture it can’t control?

The NFL wants to come up with minor league football that will be helpful and used as a developmental league for lower level college FA’s and players not drafted as well as guys who may be on their way out of the league or can be sent down to improve……Its coming…..

Two words: Developmental League. The NFL needs the UFL now that NFL Europe is gone. This is a win-win situation if they do invest, “tune in to see the NFL stars of tomorrow!”

    College is the developmental league

the canadian football league has rules in place that only allow a few players that aren’t canadian citizens onto each team. i think its 5 players. so that would mean tough luck for most undrafted college players. it could operate in a similar fashion to NBA Developmental League acting as a feeder system.
unfortunately the nfl has a virtual monopoloy on traditional pro football in the states and doesn’t always wield its power judiciously

    “College is the developmental league”
and it’s free for the NFL.
