Tapp got $3 million to sign

New Eagles defensive end Darryl Tapp will make more than $4 million this season as part of his three-year contract, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

We mentioned Tapp’s new three-year contract yesterday, but didn’t know the terms yet. Tapp will earn a $3 million signing bonus, and make $1.176 million in base salary, the tender amount he signed for before Philadelphia acquired him.

That’s a sizable investment for someone with just 2.5 sacks last year, but it looks like a worthwhile gamble from here.  Tapp recorded 13 sacks between 2007-2008, and the Eagles will have a bargain if he’s productive in 2010.

In the final two years of Tapp’s deal, they owe him less than $2.5 million-per-season in base salaries.  Tapp can earn much more in incentives.

It sounds like a win-win deal for a young pass rusher.  The Eagles just hope they did better choosing another team’s defensive end than they did with Jevon Kearse, Darren Howard, or Chris Clemons.

Howard didn’t lead the team in sacks in 08 or anything.

can’t complain about those numbers at all. the more i hear about this guy, the more i like this move.

So…if he gets 3 sacks, he will have improved over last year, and get a million per sack…..This truly is another brilliant signing by the Gold Standard….

If he can get at least 6 sacks this year it will be worth the money.
Trent Cole has needed help for soooo long, finally he’ll hopefully have it. I’m thinking a dozen + for Cole this season

As a Cowboys fan, I hate to see the Eagles get stronger on defense. Thankfully they still have McNothing at QB.

…lol at a cowboys fan talking about quarterbacks.

Replacing Jaqua Parker’s 8 sacks with Tapp’s 2.5 from last year… I hope they know more than I do.

sweet lets trade mcskeezer so we can let the full young movement do its thing……Kolb=Aaron Rodgers? i hope

The sack stats don’t tell the whole story. This guy was one of the top 5 DEs against the run last year.
It was important for the Eagles to get a run-stuffing LDE, primarily because last year they really got burned alot by draw plays being run to the right side. They simply didn’t have a 3-down DE on the left side to stop the run.
Now, at the very minimum, they have two DEs on each side who are great at stopping the run. Whether or not they improved their pass rush is debatable, but at least now they will be alot stronger against those damn draw plays that the Cowboys in particular love to run.

I don’t mind who they sign or how much they pay as long as there are 53 millionaires sitting in Dallas watching the playoffs at the end of this year!!

  11. Count Sacula says: Mar 19, 2010 6:59 PM

Yet they couldnt pay Will Witherspoon to stay? The guy could play all three LB positions.

  12. TryTheVeal says: Mar 19, 2010 7:36 PM

He’s nothing more than Chris Clemons the sequal………

i know they make the playoffs one year and they think they are the greatest…how is Romo’s track record in clutch situations again? LOL

“…lol at a cowboys fan talking about quarterbacks.”
…Romo is the #2 rated passer in NFL history (95.6)
…second in winning percentage to only Tom Brady among active QBs (.690)
…4th in NFL history in yards per pass attempt (8.01)
1500 pass attempts is the minimum marker for officially recognized NFL passing records.
LOL @ anybody talking about a cowboy fan talking about quarterbacks.

That’s quite a lot for a guy who can’t play the run and had 2.5 sacks last year.
And I thought we overpaid for Charlie Whitehurst…

    dallas sucks
i like this move by the eagles but i hope it isnt the most excitement we’ll see this offseason. GET RID OF MCNABB!!! HE DOESNT FIT OUR OFFENSE!!!!!!!!! why make a guy pass the ball 50 times that isnt accurate??? lmao

  17. Almost There says: Mar 19, 2010 8:38 PM

I don’t think a golden statue of Romo should be constructed just yet for his followers….
55 games starting with 1871 attempts
Let’s see where his rating is at when he has 6083 attempts like Favre

  18. the bigdawg says: Mar 19, 2010 8:40 PM

yea actually the charlie whitehurst deal was was worse than the tapp deal. he gets two years eight million and another two million for incentives for what? the man has not thrown an nfl pass in his career

  19. OneBadAce says: Mar 19, 2010 9:00 PM

    @ Vox,
You and I both know, his statistics are going to continually fall, so for you to mention those is pretty brave of you. Winning percentage means nothing, because Tom Brady, unlike Tony Romo, has a SUPERBOWL ring.
No one cares about yards per pass attempts, but thank you for posting it I guess.
Overall, Tony Romo, while a decent QB, isn’t anything special. You want to know why?
    Tony Romo is http://www.faniq.com/images/blog/85e52952104f6e7085073ce433e21c7f.gif
    THAT’S WHY.
LOL @ someone trying to make Tony Romo look better than he is.

  20. P-way Eagles says: Mar 19, 2010 9:33 PM

Whats Romo’s playoff record? and how many superbowl rings does he have? As many as Mcnabb lol

  21. slick12 says: Mar 19, 2010 10:08 PM

TryTheVeal, Tapp may have only had 2.5 sacks last season but, as G Cobb so astutely points out, he had 18 quarterback hurries without a penalty which makes him pretty valuable nevertheless. Those hurries lead to turnovers and eventually change the tenor of the game.
and besides, the sacks will come with his new team.
    GO EAGLES!!!

  22. whocaresaboutdallas says: Mar 19, 2010 10:49 PM

Romo ONE Playoff win ZERO Superbowls….yes it is funny. LOL!
BTW – Who gives a shit about yards per attempt. He only played 4 years and is already 30….clearly his numbers will drop.
What award to do you win for yards per att?
What award do you win for passer rating?
Lets see what his stats are after 10 years if he lasts that long.
He is only 9 playoff wins away from Mcnabb.

  23. Whiterhinocerous says: Mar 20, 2010 2:47 AM

Yes! It’s back, the PASSING ATTEMPTS RECORDS.
I love useless stats that don’t = playoff wins or superbowls. Especially from queens who say that the only true success in a season IS the Superbowl.

I’m surprised to see Eagles fans excited about the Tapp trade. He sucked in Seattle. Always hurt, and totally inconsistent when he was healthy enough to play. Sorry Philly, y’all got jobbed on this deal.
