Westbrook continues to wait

B. Westbrook.jpgAn article in Friday’s Philadelphia Daily News about running back LeSean McCoy mentions that the Eagles running back has been working out with free agent Brian Westbrook.

Oh yeah, Brian Westbrook. Remember him?

We haven’t heard a peep about the Villanova product since February 27, when Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Baltimore would be interested in him.

But the Ravens backfield is well-stocked, and the rest of the NFL is clearly hesitant to invest in Westbrook because of his medical issues.   McCoy said he doesn’t talk about Westbrook’s future with his mentor.

After the silence that has accompanied Westbrook in free agency thus far, it seems fair to wonder if he has a future in the NFL at all.

There will be interest after the draft & when his price comes down. Several teams that miss out on running backs in late April will be calling.

  2. RavensFreak00 says: Mar 19, 2010 12:24 PM

In the meantime, he should retire.

  3. Marv_Sleezy says: Mar 19, 2010 12:37 PM

Id hate to be the team to sign him only to have to be on “concussion watch” all year long.
Seeing him on the injury report every week must be bad for morale.
You have to believe the Eagles didnt want to feel complicit in the destruction of this guys brain cells any longer.
I really hope this guy isnt mortgaging his future.

  4. JWu says: Mar 19, 2010 12:40 PM

It’s like a walking death (as a player anyway)
Even if he should get back in physically acceptable share, he’s the newest poster boy for the NFL’s concern about post NFL concussion-related issues. Although, I’m sure Brian is saying, “Thanks for keeping me safe and all, but can I get a new signing bonus now?”
He’s a huge talent and has been pleasure to watch during his professional development, but likely not worth the multi-layered risk at a position which favors players with young knees and ankles.

I have to say while I think the egals suck and the fans are trash.
Westbrook was a great player I do hope he does hang it up too many blows to the head and he will be the next Mayor of Filthy.
I hope you invested well and have the cash you need to retire with class and style.

  6. zappa says: Mar 19, 2010 12:42 PM

Nice pic of Westbook holding the ball high and tight. The Vikes should pick him up just to teach Adrian Peterson how to carry the ball.

  7. Count Sacula says: Mar 19, 2010 12:46 PM

Some running back is going to tear an ACL in camp and then he’ll be called into action.

  8. *Legion* says: Mar 19, 2010 12:46 PM

Training camp will come, some running backs will get injured, and Westbrook will be called in to help.
Remember Terry Allen’s one season in Baltimore?

  9. MrExcite says: Mar 19, 2010 12:47 PM

    Plan A.
Wait for training camp injuries to pile up, sign late and save physical condition for game time.
    Plan B.
Resign with Eagles for vet minimum w/insentives
    Plan C.
Drive Andy’s kids to probation hearings, charge mileage

  10. MarcusMac7 says: Mar 19, 2010 12:47 PM

    Oakland Bound..Like Charlie Gardner did…

  11. stetai says: Mar 19, 2010 12:48 PM

HOpefully Vikings will pick him up for minimum wage. Nothing to lose, eveything to gain.

  12. tombrookshire says: Mar 19, 2010 12:51 PM

If someone signs him for the league minimum, they have a bargain if he does anything in 2010. He is capable of catching the ball out of the backfield, he is a decent blocker and he does anything he can to help the team. Great in the locker room too. He could play a little tight end, and he is a master of the screen game. Only dowside is his injury history. Use the guy situationally, keep him healthy and you got a star calibre player for a year at little cost.

  13. Nevisyakker says: Mar 19, 2010 12:54 PM

The Vikings should give him a shot, after all he already know the offense and has always been a great 3rd down back, but only with a contract heavy to incentives tied to games played.

  14. Poo Flinging Monkey says: Mar 19, 2010 12:55 PM

    He was a great player.
Notice I said “was”. No one will sign him… he’s a casualty waiting to happen.
Too bad, as I had a lot of respect for him… very underrated back.

  15. rickytheviking59 says: Mar 19, 2010 12:56 PM

Good backup to Adrian Peterson and bring in
Tiki Barber to help Adrian learn how to hold on the ball

  16. Laj Mahal says: Mar 19, 2010 1:08 PM

I’m sorry but did tombrookshire just say Westbrook could play a little Tight End? Is that a joke?

  17. Lumas101 says: Mar 19, 2010 1:11 PM

It hasn’t been entirely silent around Brian Westbrook. He had that great interview on SportsCenter.
    Oh, wait….

  18. chipwade says: Mar 19, 2010 1:22 PM

Every season there are a couple of great vets that end up without a home. Hopefully BW doesn’t fall into that boat. These guys refuse to play for less money and end up not playing for no money. Terry Glenn did that a few years back. Then he gets busted for car theft or something. It makes absolutely no sense.

  19. wydok says: Mar 19, 2010 1:24 PM

Maybe he should retire so the Vikings can sign him.

  20. Dapollock says: Mar 19, 2010 1:26 PM

Actually, he hears the phone ringing all day. Then his wife reminds him it’s not the phone, but symptoms of PCS…..

  21. danielcp0303 says: Mar 19, 2010 1:26 PM

    Who?

  22. HarrisonHits says: Mar 19, 2010 1:31 PM

He is one bad concussion away from sitting in a wheelchair and drooling for the rest of his life. He needs to take the millions he’s already made and have a nice enjoyable life away from football.
Time to call it a career.

  23. eaglesfan05 says: Mar 19, 2010 1:38 PM

this man is a great RB. he did the eagles good when he was able to stay healthy. he will be back on his feet breaking tackles and scoring touchdowns in no time.

  24. FrankfordYellowJackets says: Mar 19, 2010 2:03 PM

“Oh yeah, Brian Westbrook. Remember him?”
    Yes.
And he will be remembered long after Gregg Rosenthal has turned to dust.

  25. o0OMorrisO0o says: Mar 19, 2010 2:09 PM

    @ BigBlueFan
Why is Philly fans trash. We aint the ones going to other teams sites and youtube channels talking trash like Cowboy fans (not saying your one). You talk about class but you call Philly – Filthy. There is no reason to hate the Eagles team, they keep things in house, have very very very few (if any) criminal activity amongst their players and they keep their mouths shut. If they aint your favorite team then thats cool, everybody has a right to their favorite team. But the Eagles isnt a team I would say has a right to be hated. Cowboys, Steelers……. You get the idea….

  26. Jaydub says: Mar 19, 2010 2:28 PM

Time to hang it up. The extra money isn’t gonna mean much if you can’t walk, and one more shot to the head might be even worse. It’s just not worth it, and hes got nothing else to prove to anyone.

  27. Whiterhinocerous says: Mar 19, 2010 2:29 PM

Don’t try to reason with the trolls, Morris… they’re just here to get a rise out of you. That is actually the nicest post I’ve ever seen from BigBlueFan.

  28. trademcscab says: Mar 19, 2010 2:31 PM

o0OMorrisO0…..im an eagles fan too man but your not stating much of a case for the city when you comment read out loud sounds like a moron wrote it…..bro its simple ok learn the is and are english rules everyone learns in fifth grade…….oh yeah and for ur info jaquai parker and todd herrimans got arrested for marijuana possesion together the day before the first game of the season homie

  29. Duck Fallas says: Mar 19, 2010 2:34 PM

    @tombrookshire
    You are a moron.
    1) Just because you might be able to plug Westbrook in at TE on Madden doesn’t make it so in real life.
    2) It’s Brookshier. Out of respect you need to delete your account because that is just shameful.

As an avid eagles fan I think the eagles shouldve gave him one more yr, but I wasn’t suprised the eagles r notorious for letting vets go a yr or two early alla Dawkins last yr. So I think he will definitley be signed with another team b4 training camp, but I think teams want to wait until after the draft since this yr’s draft is stuffed with talented backs. Or if there’s simply a injury. In the end he should land with a contending team and if he stays healthy (yea right) he should be back to himself putting up impressive numbers.

Read that back to yourself and maybe you’ll understand why

  33. Jerz420 says: Mar 19, 2010 2:56 PM

Bigbluefan is a b**** shut up n worry about ur own team. The giants suck n have more issues then the eagles which is saying something since our D sucks right now I mean seriously y sign antrel rolle as the highest paid safety in the league. That’s a joke he wasn’t even drafted as a safety. What’s that I think I hear Eli calling for the wambulance. Waaaaaaaaaaaaa

  34. Fonetik says: Mar 19, 2010 3:08 PM

McCoy couldn’t ask for a better mentor.

  35. Marv_Sleezy says: Mar 19, 2010 3:14 PM

I dont think you can plug in a half back at TE on Madden can you?

  36. Akshun says: Mar 19, 2010 3:16 PM

    @ tombrookshire…
do yourself and the people that read these comments a favor and stay off this website.. You spelled Tom’s name wrong to begin with and to even mention you think Westbrook could play Tight End is so ridiculous that i feel bad making fun of you

  37. Ben Bernanke says: Mar 19, 2010 3:18 PM

Westybreezy only had 3 concussions in his career. & all the other injuries was because Reid ran him into the ground. 5 years with no one really to split time with, he took a beating. He’s a smaller guy, he’s gonna get banged up.
Philly coulda saved him gettin another back years ago. I always felt he woulda been more dangerous and healthy as a slot wr/PR-KR/3rd down back.
I’m glad we are close to gettin Bell. hopefully they treat Shady with a little more sence & respect.
The FO knew they were gonna run the life outta him. & what thanks do NFL players get for devoting their lives and health to the glory of a franchise? CUT before they get the big money in their contracts/ the whole reason they stuck around.
I’m not surprised there’s no CBA yet. Owners just dont have any loyalty. Sadly the NFL is a cut throat business

  40. nfcbeast says: Mar 19, 2010 4:16 PM

Westbrook is a class act, what other player would do what he is doing for Mccoy?
He’s helping Mccoy and helping the Eagles by doing so, he’s a smart man and obviously not a bitter guy.

  41. CRM0055 says: Mar 19, 2010 4:56 PM

Come sign onto the Eagles coaching staff. Andy said he would welcome it.

  42. aious says: Mar 19, 2010 9:04 PM

I am shocked that someone hasn’t given him 2-3 years worth of money.
He may not have “it” anymore but he has SOMETHING

  43. Adam says: Mar 20, 2010 2:36 AM

RB coach somewhere? Too bad, good player, killed the Giants every year, has my respect. He’ll be in the NFL in some way. Def not a starter

  44. buddha says: Mar 23, 2010 12:28 PM

TRADEMCSCAB, I guess you’re one of those anal posters that wants to correct other peoples mistakes and type-o’s. Well, in that case, learn how to spell players names correctyly! Its Juqua, not “Juquai”, and Herremans, not “Herrimans”.
