Albert Haynesworth’s brief appearance in Washington last week was expected.
The Redskins were aware the defensive tackle would only attend for a day, according to Jason Reid of the Washington Post. Haynesworth has chosen to work out with the same trainer that he did in the 2007 and 2008 offseasons.
By showing up to the first day to hear Mike Shanahan speak, Reid describes Haynesworth as having “met [Mike] Shanahan halfway.”
Haynesworth can essentially do what he wants during the voluntary programs. He will be at the workouts at some point in the future. Any displeasure between the two sides about Haynesworth’s role has been aired, according to Reid.
“There are no secrets between Haynesworth and the Redskins regarding Haynesworth’s feelings about the new defense and his role in it,” Reid wrote last week.
I care less about Haynesworth’s feelings and more about where he truly fits in a 3-4 defense. There’s a reason 4-3 teams targeted him in free agency. The Redskins will pay Haynesworth a $21 million option bonus because of his success disrupting the pocket and getting into the backfield.
That won’t be his job in a 3-4 defense, whether he’s lining up at tackle or end.
