Week One, Thanksgiving game announcement gets bumped a day

It has been widely expected that the NFL would announce on Monday the schedule of prime time games in Week One and the full slate of Thanksgiving games.

As it turns out, the ketchup will be at the lip of the bottle for another day.

Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that the announcement has been moved to Tuesday, tentatively.

Per Klis, NFL schedule guru Howard Katz said he needs more time before the games can be locked in.

It’s currently known that the Saints will host the first game of the season, on the evening of September 9.  There’s a growing sense that the Vikings will be the opponent.

The Jets reportedly will host the first game of the Week One Monday night doubleheader.  The Jets also are expected to host a game on Thanksgiving night, which means that the Patriots would play at Detroit.

    Brett Favre.

Ok, so i’m not the brightest bulb in the box, how in the world did you come to the conclusion that because the Jets will host a game on Thanksgiving night, that the Patriots will play Detroit. I don’t get the connection.

If the Jets do get a Thanksgiving night game, I wouldn’t be surprised if they put the Vikings as the opponent. With Favre having played one season for the Jets and with Tomlinson choosing the Jets over the Vikings, it only makes sense that this game be in primetime

I read a column Sunday from a respected football expert who covers the Saints, and he says that there’s talk about an extra Thanksgiving week game (Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday) between the Steelers and the Saints.

“The Jets also are expected to host a game on Thanksgiving night, which means that the Patriots would play at Detroit.”

Potentially, if the NFL doesn’t shake up the rotation and send the AFC back to Dallas again. The back-and-forth rotation held the same from 1979 to ’80 and from 1989 to ’90. Always a chance they could do that again this year.

    @Drednot,
On the Lions schedule this season, only two AFC teams will play at Ford Field — the Jets and Pats. The Lions opponent on Thanksgiving will be an AFC team, since CBS is covering the game. Therefore, if the Jets are hosting a Thanksgiving game, the opponent has to be the Pats.

The Detroit Lions only play New England and The Jets at home this year in the AFC and the Thanksgiving game is on CBS (I think) And if it is then an AFC team must play so you only have one choice left. :)

  9. 8man says: Mar 22, 2010 1:39 PM

Apparently there is always one AFC team that plays on Thanksgiving. And they alternate that team between Dallas and Detroit each year. This year the AFC team plays Detroit. There are only two AFC teams on the Lions’ home schedule for 2010: the Jets and the Patriots.
Thus if the Jets are playing Thanksgiving night, then the Lions must be playing the Patriots on Thanksgiving Day.
Mostly process of elimination, but it sounds logical.

The Lions play the AFC east in 2010. The Lions two home games with the AFC east are against the Patriots and the Jets. If the Jets are playing thanksgiving night, the Lions MUST host the Patriots on the traditional thanksgiving day game because Dallas and Detriot rotate the AFC team each year. It is Detriot’s turn for the AFC opponent on Thanksgiving day in 2010.

Dred: The networks flip flop on the DET/DAL games every year, so since DET was on Fox last year, they should be on CBS this year. The 2 AFC teams that go to the Lions this year are NE and the Jets. If the Jets are hosting the NFLN game, then that leaves the Patriots as the team that would go to Detroit.

    Drednot,
If the Jets get the Thanksgiving game, the Pats would play the Lions because the Pats and Jets are the only two AFC teams to play at Detroit this year. Detroit and Dallas rotate each year to who plays and AFC team because one of the two games must be on CBS. This year it’s Detroit that gets the AFC team hence the Pats would slide in there if the Jets get the night game.

I hope opening night is the Vikings (at the Saints)
That way, after the Saints win, the Viking fans will have more than 10 days to zip it before they get a chance to add to their loss column. More likely, they will just continue to blame it on the refs.

  14. GoBrowns19 says: Mar 22, 2010 2:06 PM

I’m glad the Browns never play on Thanksgiving. Who wants to try and watch your team play with dorky aunts and uncles making fun of you for being an overzealous fan, while 35 little kids are jumping all over you asking you to play with them every 10 seconds. No thanks. Holidays suck because of annoying extended families.

The NFL needs more time because they have to change Pittsburgh’s schedule to remove them from all prime time games, thanks to BIG BEN.

can we get a Broncos vs Redskins in Denver to open up the first Sunday night game?

  17. nyjshane88 says: Mar 22, 2010 2:36 PM

Vikings-Saints opening night would be sick. I think the Thanksgiving night game will prob be either the Vikes or Green Bay @Jets. They seem to like the afc vs nfc matchups on turkey day.

the lions are going to beat the patriots on thanksgiving day watch & see

  19. Dewey Axewoond says: Mar 22, 2010 2:41 PM

I think regardless of what happens with the schedule, we can all be certain of one thing:
The Vikings will ultimately be cheated out of ANOTHER Super Bowl.
And by “cheated” I mean “have an embarrassing, epic, stunning, catastrophic choking collapse at season’s end, then cry about it until Spring when the annual lemming run begins all over again–when the loud and obnoxious proclamations of paper championships can be heard throughout the media and on message boards everywhere…”

  20. Redskinfan1126 says: Mar 22, 2010 2:50 PM

    @ Warren
The Redskins and Broncos played last year and wont play again until 2013. It would be a good game though. Maybe we can get a preseason game. Highly unlike preseason teams normally play teams in their own region.

  21. AllThat says: Mar 22, 2010 2:56 PM

I heard the Viqueens are playing the NBA west on Thanksgiving Day. Think they can beat the Clippers?

  22. GreenAsGrass says: Mar 22, 2010 2:59 PM

Goodell has become a mediocre to bad NFL exec overnight. His handling of the coin flip for Jets / Giants game does not hold water. Are you kidding me? And he said he held the coin toss and its his responsiblility to pick who hosts the first game. It won’t be long before we find out other dishonest dealings on Park Ave. and Goodell will have to face the music. Did you think you would pull something like this over the NY fans eyes with no backlash?

  23. habibfromnewdehli says: Mar 22, 2010 3:00 PM

    Eh, whatever.
I still think the games will be leaked sometime today.
Nobody can keep their mouth shut in this twitter-loving day-and-age.

    Dewey Axewoond:
If Brett Favre returns as Minn’s QB, then, yes, you will be correct. It will be inevitible.

  25. funi says: Mar 22, 2010 4:30 PM

Since not too many peole have NFL network, the Thansgiving night game should be Miami-Jets. Network woulds would nto want to have Jets-Pats in Nov or Jets-Packers/Vikes on TV when not many people would view it.
