Goodell believes overtime rule will be changed for regular season

Already, many indications have emerged suggesting that the NFL will bootstrap Tuesday’s adoption of modified sudden death overtime for the postseason into a rule that applies during the regular season.

On Wednesday, Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked whether the change will be made.

“I think it will be,” he said.

“I think what we’d like to do is continue to analyze it and go back and talk to our players about it also and we’ll discuss it again,” Goodell added. “There is the potential it will come up. There was a strong consensus for expanding it into the regular season.”

We discussed earlier today the challenges presented by adopting the new rule for the regular season. In a nutshell, the games potentially will be longer, the NFLPA will likely be more opposed to the move, and there will be more ties.

Still, the fact that the owners were able to push through the rule for the playoffs makes it more likely that they’ll push the rule through for the regular season, too.
