Ross buys Kangaroo TV, offers 155,000 units to other teams

The NFL is serious about enhancing the game-day experience, dragging the couch into the stadium at a time when improved television technology is bringing the stadium into the living room.

To get there, the new owner of Kangaroo TV has made an offer to the various NFL teams.  And they’ll be more inclined to listen to the new owner because he also owns one of the NFL teams.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross purchased Kangaroo TV in December, according to Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal.  And he’s offering 5,000 units to each of the other 31 teams, in exchange for the promotion and marketing of the devices for sale to fans.

The product, which will be renamed GameDay Vision, offers a variety of information, including videos and stats.  The league’s RedZone channel also will be available.

So, essentially, while fans are sitting in an NFL stadium watching a game, they can be watching the key moments from other games, as they happen.  From the league’s perspective, that’s a preferred alternative to having them watch the key moments from other games while at home.

Maybe in Oakland they can just show the other games so the fans don’t have to watch the sorry product Nosferatu forces on the field. Anything that distracts from watching Russell waddle and misfire has to be a good thing.

Will we able able to watch the Rapenstein trial with this, or will it be pay-per-view?

Won’t last if it does take off. With everyone having smartphones and iphones, they will be able to get the same stuff. I don’t think it will increase ticket sales at all. Just maybe something to do during time outs.

Oh that is nice, how much will that run for us fans? 150 to use while at the stadium. My concern was never the experience at the stadium, it was the cost of that experience that bothered me and other people. A meal for one at a game runs u no less than 15 dollars for burger, fries, and a drink. So why not watch the games at home in HD with food that will not be tripled in price. I love the experience of the 2 games i went to this past season but the cost will keep me from going to other games in the future. I just cant justify spending 200 to sit at a game when i can watch it at home for almost nothing.

I honestly think this is F’ing brilliant. At first I thought Kangaroo TV was like the Australlian broadcasting company. Stereotype power GO!!!!

You have been able to rent one during Seahawks games at Qwest for the past 3 seasons…. pretty cool device especially with the product that was on the field that last 2 seasons at Qwest

Love what Stephen Ross is doing. Buy out the company and make the other 31 teams pay you to be able to use it. While all of us Dolphin season ticket holders can use it for free.
You all have no idea what this little thing can do. I had one last season for the dolphins season and its amazing. You can control camera angles and replays. Track your fantasy stats and more. Not to mention that this year you can listen to the live radio broadcast and potentially order food from your seat. Cant hate on Ross for spending on the team now we just need to win DAMMIT!!!!

do you have to return these devices at the end of the game? how much do they cost for season ticket holders if anything? can they decline the cost if its substantial?

If the NFL wants to enhance the gameday, in stadium experience, they should give fans the option to rent headsets (ala NASCAR) that could be tuned to the coaches headsets. It would not be for the kiddies, but it would entertain the masses like nothing else. They can surely figure out a way to keep anyone from gaining an advantage. Maybe cut off the transmission until 3 or 4 seconds before the snap of the ball.

    Channing Crowder is that you?

Since the Browns don’t have cheerleaders in Cleveland, and given the product we do have on the field, can I watch other teams cheerleaders during the game on this thing?

  15. Ron E says: Mar 24, 2010 4:26 PM

why not setup jumbo-trons around the stadiums and show other games just like a sports bar?

  16. FLYBOY says: Mar 24, 2010 4:37 PM

Word on the street is this technology will allow the average fan to watch players after the game. For example, we could watch Ben Ruthlessonfurburger as he leaves Heinz and goes to a bar and finds his next target. This way, we won’t have to stay at home and wait for the report on ESPN, or the late night news…we’re right there!!!

If you get to the stadium early enough, you get it for free. I’ve been able to do this a few times, if the beltway traffic isn’t too bad (on a Sunday for chrissakes!!!).
It’s not bad. But, for the most part…the thing is sitting beneath my seat, getting diet coke spilled on it.

  18. FinFan says: Mar 24, 2010 5:36 PM

I hope he has lawyered up cause the NFL will jump on this as fast as a fat chick in a chinese buffet.
If its not NFL owned it will be stomped out.

Either Ross is an idiot (my vote) or Sprint should worry about its contract with the league.

I-phone and it’s equivalents do the same thing and more, see this being a dead end.
