Shanahan leaves door open at quarterback

On the same day that Redskins coach Mike Shanahan sung the praises of his former quarterback in Denver, Shanahan stopped short of declaring either Jason Campbell or Rex Grossman to be “the guy” in D.C.

Asked by NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora whether there will be an open competition at the position, Shanahan said, “There’s competition at every position.  Just because a guy comes in as a maybe third, fourth or fifth guy, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a chance to compete.  But Rex Grossman was with [offensive coordinator] Kyle [Shanahan] in Houston, he understands the system. . . .  We’re going to get as much steps as we can and have all these guys compete.”

Uh-oh.  Washington?  Get ready for a guy who fumbles a lot, and who throws a lot of deep interceptions.  You should just pretend they’re punts.

    Very funny, or perhaps not.

Yes! Sexy Rexy Gunslinger Grossman returns!
This made my day. The man is a true legend. Injury after injury in Chicago and fans bashing him down, he would always fight back and conducted himself in a way that really makes you pull for him. Unlike Kyle Orton and Jay Cutler.
As for his play, yeah the costly errors are there. But so his arm. Dude has a cannon and when he’s on, he is ON. If he can eliminate the errors he can be an elite quarterback. MVP talks half way through the ’06 season. The most memorable time I’ve been apart of as a lifetime Bears fan. I would love to have him back in Chicago. But I’m glad he’s getting a shot with a coaching staff that knows what they’re doing. Seriously, this is awesome. Redskins fans are in for a surprise.

ANYTHING is better than Campbell and Shanahan realizes that. As it stands right now the depth is:
    1 Grossman
    2 Brennen
    3 Campbell
and rumor has it they hope to draft Bradford or Tebow and hope to trade Campbell for an additional pick.
Campbell has a very small fan following around DC that post him up a lot but he is pretty much disliked by most fans that recognize he is a disease for the franchise. His cult fans are usually pretty ignorant about facts and just chant he is their hero… pretty strange for a guy that has been a Pro for 6 years, starter for 4 years and has yet to have a winning season and is 15 wins and 39 losses… its definitely not something to be proud of and remember 2 of those years were with Gibbs as the head coach and during one of those years he got hurt and Todd Collins took over and won 4 in a row with the same offense.

  7. Bears0492 says: Mar 24, 2010 11:23 PM

YES! As a bears fan in MD, I’m glad Rex is finally getting another chance. He was basically kicked out of Chicago unfairly. He threw a lot of picks but he was a solid QB. I think he can thrive in a new sytem like the one they’re running in DC

half the coaches in the league will tell you most positions are open competition. That’s what motivates 2nd and 3rd string guys

  10. CanadianVikingFan says: Mar 24, 2010 11:28 PM

Who cares, they don’t have the offence to compete with the other 3 teams.

  11. mcarey032 says: Mar 24, 2010 11:40 PM

Believe in the Shanaplan! I am willing to give him time, provided he is allowed to stay longer than 3 years or wants to stay that long.

  12. rmcgov says: Mar 24, 2010 11:43 PM

nothing wrong with a little competition….not like we’re gonna miraculously have an offense this year anyway

  13. sim448 says: Mar 24, 2010 11:48 PM

“you should just pretend they’re punts”. hahahahaha, that is good florio. grossman. not good. jason campbell, 80’s porn stache. I think the redskins are drafting a qb.

  14. Rick_Sanders says: Mar 24, 2010 11:55 PM

Yea…Ok.. thats IF it works out like that….. we will be ready. Its still plenty early, more roster moves to be made, alot yet still to happen like draft, TC, preseason.. but OK……………….

  15. spennyhatch says: Mar 25, 2010 12:30 AM

Fumbles a lot? Throws Deep picks???
So what you saying is that Jason Campbell is going to remain the starter then?

  16. NagaSwan says: Mar 25, 2010 12:39 AM

Fumbles a lot? That’s Jason Campbell. Deep picks? Hard to throw a lot of deep picks when you attempt 1 deep pass per game like Campbell.

  17. el_dude00 says: Mar 25, 2010 12:41 AM

Jason can get this job. Campbell is athletic enough to play action pass. Shanny may have him roll out a ton when they aren’t running the ball.
Grossman jokes are cool though. Very retro.
I still think that the Skins draft a QB or get involved in the Donovan McNabb action.

  18. LighTsouT says: Mar 25, 2010 1:04 AM

  19. Stetson wears panties says: Mar 25, 2010 1:09 AM

The sad part about it is that Interceptus Rex is the best Florida quarterback the Gators have produced. Danny Wurawful sucked, Mount Saint Teblows isn’t going to be any better.

Rich Kotite would of won with Elway…

  21. jackybadass says: Mar 25, 2010 1:40 AM

  22. 805guy says: Mar 25, 2010 2:56 AM

Yes Rex did not fulfill his expectations in Chicago. Try throwing passes to dudes like me…average Joes…remember that show? I like to think I can handle my own. But REX can be a good QB! Media killed him and he handled it like a champ!

  23. bofarr says: Mar 25, 2010 3:16 AM

What about Colt Brennan? He’s very accurate and seems like he would be suited to Shanahan’s offense.

  24. MagicMan407 says: Mar 25, 2010 5:15 AM

Haha no way Grossman beats Campbell for the starting job. Unless Campbell is traded and he battles Tim Tebow or Jimmy Clausen.

  25. Brownwood26 says: Mar 25, 2010 5:29 AM

Florio, how are you putting Rex in the starting lineup already? Training camp hasn’t even started yet! Contrary to popular belief, Jason Campbell has game and will play his best ball now that he’s got a coaching staff worth a damn. Book it.

  26. We need linemen says: Mar 25, 2010 6:04 AM

I don’t know which one would win the competition but Rex Grossman isn’t a bad quarterback. He is inconsistent, prone to maddening mistakes, but he throws a very pretty deep ball, puts a lot of zip on his short passes and is more accurate than Campbell.
Sure Grossman had a lot of problems with botched snaps in Chicago, but so did Cutler after he went there. Maybe the problem wasn’t with Grossman but with the centre Olin Kreutz, or the way the coaching staff has them practice.
Grossman made a lot of boneheaded throws but, again, Cutler looked far worse in that Bears offence than he did with the Broncos. Grossman didn’t exactly have a lot of receiving talent to play with, and it wasn’t as though the running game and defence were good enough to carry the team without any production from the passing game. So he forced throws into coverage. Maybe he can be coached out of that but maybe it isn’t so bad to have a quarterback who will try to win rather than try not to lose.
Campbell has been turned into a basket case who so fears interceptions that he rarely takes risks. Moreover, when he does he can become hesitant, increasing the chances of an interception. Maybe he can be coached out of that, but it might be easier to work with Grossmans over-confidence than Campbells lack of it.

  27. Buck Stallion says: Mar 25, 2010 6:09 AM

I’m not a big Campbell fan, but no way Grossman beats him out in a fair competition.

  28. Big Tex says: Mar 25, 2010 6:44 AM

    @RexGrossman
“The man is a true legend.” Well, I’ve got to admit that about made me spit coffee out my nose laughing. What the hell is legendary? The one season over 3,000 yards (barely) when he also had 20 INTs? The other 6 seasons when he averaged a combined 500 yards a season? The 54% completetion percentage? The ONE season out of a 7 year career where he topped 5 TDs? The career 69.5 QB rating?
Anyway, thanks for the HUGE laugh this morning.
BTW, if a “cannon” arm is a big criteria for you, Al Davis can get you a guy with Big Bertha attached to his right shoulder. He’d probably take a duffle bag full of dirty jocks and a bucket of warm spit in return.

  29. Walshy711 says: Mar 25, 2010 6:51 AM

Skins should just take a QB to develop at some point after round 1. They have bugger issues at left tackle that could be addressed in round 1 and shannahan will develop his next QB while letting campell and grossman get trashed because of a mediocre offensive line.

  30. JustMike says: Mar 25, 2010 6:55 AM

  34. Cleg says: Mar 25, 2010 7:42 AM

Rex will not be the starting QB in Washington unless Campbell gets hurt which is likely if Shanny does not address the O line in the draft and remaining FA. Rex was brought in to help teach the system to Campbell and the other QB’s, not to be the starter.
    @downwithdansnyder – word.

  35. realitypolice says: Mar 25, 2010 8:14 AM

Are we assuming the first round tender on Campbell means no one will sign him? Did Campbell sign his tender and I missed it? If he didn’t, I could see a scenario where someone signs him to an offer sheet and then negotiates with the Skins for lower compensation. I have the feeling Shanahan would rather start fresh with his own guys.
And if I was Campbell, I would sure as hell want to get out of town if my coach thought so little of me that he brought in Rex freakin Grossman to compete for my job.

  36. richturpin says: Mar 25, 2010 8:21 AM

The only ignorant Redskins fans are the ones calling for Colt Brennan. he can’t play in the NFL…he’s a gimmick QB who ran a gimmick offense in college. If Campbell is on the roster he will be the starter. That’s it.

Shanahan and Clausen are going to light up the scoreboard for the next decade. Anybody who thinks he will pass on Clausen and go into the season with Campbell/Grossman is crazy. And Snyder certainly won’t stand in the way of drafting a new hot-shot QB.
Shanahah has proven he isn’t afraid to draft and develop young, cocky quarterbacks.

I’m no Eagles fan, but let’s keep our facts straight. The Eagles haven’t exactly “finished last” Here are the overall NFC East records over the last ten years:
    1) Eagles: 103-56-1 playoff appearances: 8
    2) Giants: 88-72 playoff appearances: 6
    3) Cowboys: 82-78 playoff appearances: 4
    4) Redskins: 70-90 playoff appearances: 2
And if you mean titles, it’s actually been lot longer than 30 years for the Eagles, so you’re wrong about that too.
Other than that, your right on point.

Tebow? Are you a clown? They are not looking at Tebow. Tim Tebow will be a used car lot manager in Naples in three years, not or never a Skin.
We have bigger issues now anyway. Trainrex Grossman is a freak. Campbell cannot even decide what type of cereal to have in the morning, let alone who to throw the ball to. And the QBs in this draft are all either gimmped out or frosty haired goons.
Please Skins, take Okung and tough it out with Campbell. Get a QB next year.

You are a moron dude! Campbell is far and away better than rex or colt. Colt played at a division one college that never played any big schools except Georgia in the sugar bowl and he got benched. He continues to throw picks against third string defenses in the preseason. Rex has had his chance, Get Okung and get a line set. who knows campbell might now be a bad qb when he can remain upright
