Rex Ryan drops 40 pounds in three weeks

Jets coach Rex Ryan appeared last night on NFL Network’s Total Access to discuss the team’s upcoming appearance on HBO’s Hard Knocks.

We were surprised by his appearance.  Ryan, who underwent lap-band surgery less than two weeks ago, looks noticeably thinner.  He told Paul Burmeister that he already has lost 40 pounds in only three weeks.

Ryan also talked about running back Leon Washington, expressing once again his disappointment that Washington is choosing not to work out with the team and rehab his broken leg with Jets trainers.  Ryan also said he prefers having a three-headed monster at tailback in 2010, combining Washington with Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson.  On Thursday, Ryan said he thinks Washington, who is not under contract, is “making a mistake” by staying away.

I a truly shocked that this whale could keep his mouth shut that long…whether the subject was his diatribes or eating.

  2. Dolphin Fan says: Mar 26, 2010 8:47 AM

He took a dump. Big deal.

  3. polakojones says: Mar 26, 2010 8:48 AM

because its forced starvation. It doesnt make you change your lifestyle/eating habits, it surgically starves you. Some people (Rex), enjoy eating. A lot! The surgeons have taken that away from him. Here comes the depression!

  4. Pervy Harvin says: Mar 26, 2010 8:49 AM

Good for Rex! Now the only thing huge on him will be his mouth! I actually like the guy. Not afraid to say what he thinks.

  5. Jack Burton says: Mar 26, 2010 8:50 AM

Listening to LT talk out of both sides of his mouth can make anyone lose 40lbs.

  6. Gautam says: Mar 26, 2010 8:53 AM

that’s a very bad way to lose weight!
his body’s metabolism will be screwed at this rate

    Good for him!!

  8. lordmandinga says: Mar 26, 2010 8:57 AM

Before all the Rex Ryan hate rolls in, Good for him. I can only imagine the strain of being an NFL coach, especially one that intense. Hopefully he doesn’t end up with the same complications that many that have that surgery do.

  9. Biglardawg says: Mar 26, 2010 8:58 AM

That’s nothing. Braylon Edwards drops 40 passes in a day.

Yeah Leon is making a huge mistake by not working for free. Oh wait it’s the Jets who are making the mistake of not taking care of one of the most dynamic 3rd down backs in football, and to clarify I hate the Jets but Leon is a stud who should be paid.
As for the lapband I give the guy 6 months before he starts putting a steak, potatoes, and gravy in a blender and starts drinking like Lindsey Lohan on a friday night.

  12. 3Ply Stagliano says: Mar 26, 2010 9:11 AM

I’m sure it’s not the healthiest way to lose weight but being morbidly obese isn’t great for one’s life expectancy either.
He’d got to the point where something needed to be done. Should he have done it by changing his diet and exercising properly? Almost definitely but he didn’t (although he could be doing that too) and hopefully his health will improve from the choice he has made.

  13. wydok says: Mar 26, 2010 9:16 AM

I hope he doesn’t get gall stones, like I did. I just had surgery last Thursday to remove my gall bladder, and damn, I’m still messed up.
Although I didn’t do the lap band, I lost weight the old fashioned way (diet and exercise),

  14. SHUTYOURFACE says: Mar 26, 2010 9:16 AM

ok. he went from a fat ass.
    to a less fat. ass.

  16. Chapnasty2 says: Mar 26, 2010 9:29 AM

What I dont understand is how anyone who has access to the facilities and the money to buy healthy foods can get that fat to begin with. He is just lazy.

  17. jetters149 says: Mar 26, 2010 9:32 AM

    big stretch:
Do you know that they tried to pay leon last year and he wanted more he could have had 4.5 mil thats pretty good for a guy who get 10-15 touches a game. And they do take of there own with big contracts just watch going to happen with revis, harris, greene.

  18. 123456 says: Mar 26, 2010 9:34 AM

So the Jets wont win more than half their games because their HC is fat.
Pats fans have to be the most ignorant fans on the planet. Your stupidity knows no bounds.

  21. BornSlippy says: Mar 26, 2010 9:44 AM

Just a lazy way to lose weight. Still talking how his team is the greatest even though without the colts sitting down they are a 8-8 or 7-9 team that no on cares about. They beat 2 franchises with a combined 2 playoff wins in 15 years and he thinks they are a dynasty. Jim mora jr went to the nfccg his first year too.

  22. Devils Advocate says: Mar 26, 2010 9:45 AM

damn – now i can’t call him a fat tub of gooo anymore, i guess a fat tub of shit will have to do.
ps- if i have offended any of my obese friends out there let me apologize right now. if the “politically correct” people out there are offended. well……you can just eat shit and die.

  25. The Franchise says: Mar 26, 2010 9:51 AM

  28. PirateFreedom says: Mar 26, 2010 10:12 AM

I’ve hated the Jets since they stole Curtis Martin and I’ve had plenty of reasons to hate them more since.
But I’m glad they hired Ryan despite the fact he’s done a good job.
He makes the division even more fun to follow

  29. mrzazz41387 says: Mar 26, 2010 10:13 AM

It’s only a problem for everyone else. No one with the Jets minds. We love it.

  30. RayDaMayor says: Mar 26, 2010 10:15 AM

Jets still won’t make the Super Bowl so long as King Rex is head coach.

  32. ozu says: Mar 26, 2010 10:21 AM

Leon probably shouldn’t have turned down the $10m guaranteed last offseason. He has no leverage now. He’s not a free agent and no team is giving up a 2nd round pick for RB with a gimpy leg.

I see because its raining out you probably cant cut any lawns today….does that mean we’re going to have to read your b.s posts all day? Can you at least mix them up a little? You post the same crap day in and day out.
Let me apologize in advance if you have tourettes.

  34. Bob Nelson says: Mar 26, 2010 10:29 AM

As long as they were opening him up they could cut or suck out a lot of the fat that was there.
What does it say about a coach’s dicipline if he can’t control what he puts in his mouth and maintain weight?

Thomas Jones 1,400 yards 14 TDs replaced by a rookie who had a nice couple of games and LT who is on his way out. They need to pay Leon that guy is a stud, and the NFL is a 2 back system now. He averages over 6 yards a carry and almost 8 yards per catch.

  37. GreenAsGrass says: Mar 26, 2010 10:52 AM

hey big blue fan, wait…what’s that noise??? Oh shoot, Vikings just scored again on the G-fags. Way to close down YOUR stadium which is rubble now, this year you get to visit the JETS new stadium enjoy being the renter now and don’t muck it up, okay?

Aren’t 8 year olds in school right now? I think it is work slacking adults who are envious that they are putting in some boring ass work and getting paid a mere fraction of what the fat guy is getting, that you are referring to.

  40. 65TossPowerTrap says: Mar 26, 2010 11:04 AM

Gross. He must look like a pile of nachos.

  41. AllThat says: Mar 26, 2010 11:18 AM

I heard he doesn’t use toilet paper either. He has several NE hoodies to choose from.

  42. Douchebaggery says: Mar 26, 2010 11:34 AM

This is not healthy at all. He’s only going to end up hurting himself. A year from now we’ll be reading a story about how he needs surgery after throwing his back out or something.

  43. Howie Handles says: Mar 26, 2010 11:37 AM

Good for him, but 40lbs in 2 weeks isn’t healthy. That’s too fast.

    Andy Reid – pay attention!

  45. 6goingon7 says: Mar 26, 2010 11:40 AM

Say what you will about the guy…he’s not a selfish man. This surgery had nothing to do with Rex’s appearance or health. He did it so Dirty Sanchez can hide under his huge skin flap for warmth when it gets cold…like a baby penguin. “Ahh its like a little slice of southern California in New Jersey.”
    Gross…

  47. jetboy says: Mar 26, 2010 12:10 PM

what do the Giants have going for them next year? you guys a marginal team, who now is playing second fiddle to the Jets and are whining because we are actually doing something, with our offseason, O AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, I’m sorry we had to close out Giants Stadium last year for you guys with a win, and your sorry ass’s broke down like 80 year old transvestite hooker chillin at bigblue’s house.

  48. Big Ed 1935 says: Mar 26, 2010 12:14 PM

Now the Jets will have to pay big and small for coach uniforms.
There was no way they could lap band his mouth!
    Like father like son!
I understand when he gets down to 150 lbs he will be the host of SNL and then right into stand up comedy!
    $$$$ will come pouring in.

  49. Mindraider says: Mar 26, 2010 12:18 PM

I heard that Jamarcus Russel found Rex Ryans 40lbs and wont give it back.

  50. PatsFan54 says: Mar 26, 2010 12:20 PM

I commend Rex Ryan for taking the drastic step of having the weight loss surgery. I know he could have lost it the old fashion way with diet and exercise however in order to maintain the weigh loss he will have to do just that.
Regardless of Rex being the HC of the JETS I hope that he will be able to use his visual high profile position in the largest TV market to educate the public on the benefits of staying fit and eating right and that will translate onto the field as well.
He has a cocky attitude and a mantra of being a players coach and with last yrs season he was able to back it up and with Sanchez being another yr of experience in the league should only get better and make the Pats/Jets rivalry that much better for the 2010 and make our choice of team WIN.
Yes I’m A PATS FAN but I will always look at the big picture and if Rex Ryan can influence teens and adults alike to eat better and healthier then we is a better man for it. And that is more important than being the HC of the JETS.

  52. Stone says: Mar 26, 2010 12:36 PM

Big f&cking deal. Are we going to congratulate him now for losing weight because he had surgery? Why didn’t he just fast if he wanted to starve himself and lose weight. Give me a break.

  53. gbizzo says: Mar 26, 2010 2:21 PM

what did he do drop three 13.3 lb steaks while eating them?

  54. DeeDubb says: Mar 26, 2010 5:43 PM

So he deserves credit like he lost those 40 lbs. through hard work and dedication?? Surgery is a cheap, temporary fix and that loud mouthed moron will be a tubby slob once again. Way to go Rex, you are truly a HERO!!!
