Tebow challenge will cause someone to take a chance on him early

col_tebow_250-1.jpgPlenty of you have complained about the number of Tim Tebow stories on the site.  The traffic generated by each story suggests a different sentiment.

Though we won’t be flooding the site (some of you are saying, “Aren’t you already?”) with tales of Tebow, we will continue to follow the same principle that has guided us since November 1, 2001:  If it’s interesting to us, we’ll assume it’ll be interesting to you.

And here’s something interesting we’ve heard recently regarding Tebow.  A league source with extensive experience regarding the way teams think and operate told me Friday that he’s convinced someone will jump on Tebow late in round one or early in round two for the opportunity to turn Tebow into a great quarterback.

“Someone will want to be the guy who turned Tebow into a star,” the source said.  “There’s nothing to lose.  Everyone expects him to struggle.”

That’s precisely why Packers coach Mike McCarthy recently told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he’d “love the opportunity to develop him.”

It’s a twist on the more usual situation in which a highly-talented player has off-field issues or on-field attitudes that undermine his performance.  Every coach believes that he’s the coach to get through to the guy and change him.  Thus, every coach will now believe that he’s the coach to mold Tebow’s talent and intangibles into greatness.

It also suggests to us that head coaches with an offensive background will be more likely to take Tebow, since those coaches will be in a better position to roll up their sleeves and become personally involved with the development of the player.  One notable exception would be Cleveland, where the coach, Eric Mangini, has a defensive background but the guy calling the shots, Mike Holmgren, knows a thing or two about taking a raw talent and transforming him into a Hall of Famer.

Our best guess at this point is that a team that truly covets him will jump into the bottom of round one to get him, possibly before the team that currently employs Holmgren’s greatest triumph gets a chance to give Tebow a year to learn from him directly.

I expect Favre to change his name to Tebow here soon…He is GOT to tired of Tim getting all the press in the offseason. The nerve of Timothy.

And Tebow haters begin with your venom!
This makes total sense. Love him or hate him, all this guy ever did in College Football was win. He was, arguably, one of the best College players EVER, and someone will take a shot at him.
He has the athletic ability and intangibles and we’ll see whether that will help him convert into a pro style QB.

As with the Favre story the last few years, we are sick of the Tebow story because they consist of constantly rehashing old news. Just because someone different says the same thing that has basically been said by a dozen others does not make it interesting or newsworthy. At least not to many of us. But that has been a trend with PFT over the last couple of years. I used to read every story because they were all interesting, now I just skim and look for the occasionally interesting story.

this headline is right on, as long as we ambiguously define ‘early’ to mean the first half of the entire draft.

  9. bloodystupidjohnson says: Mar 27, 2010 10:30 AM

Why would the Browns, with one of the elite left tackles in the the game (Joe Thomas), want a left handed QB?
There would be no guarentee that Thomas could move to the right side, and if he did that he would be as effective there as on the left.

PFT is under pressure from NBC to appear to be in front of every angle on every story. PFT still has to fill its pages with ‘new’ stories on old topics. MEnwhile, PFT demonstrates its investigative inemptness by failing to break any ‘new’ story on the specific cause of the 49ers firing of its GM. Surely there are rumors out there regarding the ‘personal issues’ that led to his dismissal,, but Florio only posts rumors about players, not management.

What BS. People here would comment if you posted what you had for breakfast.
Besides, the reason they post has nothing to do with the newsworthiness of the story- it’s the silly little pieces of pure conjecture that you make up-
“Our best guess at this point is that a team that truly covets him will jump into the bottom of round one to get him, possibly before the team that currently employs Holmgren’s greatest triumph gets a chance to give Tebow a year to learn from him directly.”
-Which generate the hits, because you know how to craft your wild ass guesses so that each one hits a particular fan base and sets off the comments.
Your site has become a cynical, manipulative, contrived haven for tabloid sports journalism, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

If you think the story is stupid do not comment. Even a negative one. 500 comments telling Florio what a putz he is is the same as 500 comments telling him he is a genious. Its 500 page hits he can take to the advertisers or NBC.
Warloxx is even more on target then Mad Campah. We should all read that second comment in this section and take it to heart. It will make this site better because we will stop rewarding Florio for posting crap stories designed simply to generate comments and thus page hits.

  21. GB3Pack4 says: Mar 27, 2010 11:34 AM

While Mike as an offensive-minded coach with a thriving QB school is undoubtedly slavering over just being in the same room with a young draftable QB who’s already established himself as having tremendous – unchallenged -attitude, character, athleticism, leadership skills and raw talent, i.e., huge overall potential, he’d never do it – it would be a shortsighted, self-indulgent decision, even if it were his, which it’s not.
No better evidence of that than this last season, when TT made the decisions, as is his job, and all Mike could do was lobby, after a long, tough year, for Ted to lock up some “professional buffers”, before the draft, e.g., Tauscher, Clifton, etc. Green Bay has more critical needs than acquiring yet another “qb of the future”, especially one for whom it may take longer to reach the stage of relatively consistency. Maybe he’ll come out firing on all cylinders, but you don’t know. GB cannot squander any pick this year on a QB-to-be-developed-at-a-later-date, given the team’s circumstances.
Read somebody’s comment recently, seeking support for the theory that Tebow is “likely” to go to GB, because of how they snatched up AR in 2005 when he dropped to #24. This is Swiss cheese reasoning -here’s my own version of Swiss cheese: 1) “Snatching up” Rodgers was not as impulsive as it might have appeared that day. Favre was traded in 2008; I believe “what’re we gonna do after BF” may have been in the Pack’s mind as far back as 2000. 2) Rodgers did not come with all the fussy studied negatives surrounding his game.
I’d love to see Tebow come out – somewhere – and knock everybody dead with his prowess – the League can allways use another super QB, as can the press and the fans, but I think it’s gonna be awhile. GB just doesn’t have the time.

  24. GB3Pack4 says: Mar 27, 2010 11:44 AM

Tebow is NOT a loser – no one who has achieved what he already has in his young life, can be termed a loser, whether or not he makes it in the NFL.

  25. PackFaninPackLand says: Mar 27, 2010 12:17 PM

If Satan (I mean Ted Thompson) drafts Tim Tebow at #23, he along with McCarthy should be fired immediately.
If I were Ted Thompson (and I thank every day I am not) I take the biggest, baddest O-Tackle still on the draft board with our #1 pick (seeing as that both of our Tackles are 33 years old and coming off injuries) !!! Or the best safety or OLB available.
But of course that would constitute filling an actual “need” and protecting our franchise QB, so naturally that ensures Tebow will land in Green Bay. How freakin’ stooooopid is that ????

  26. cddbrowns says: Mar 27, 2010 12:21 PM

I would almost bet my house that if Tebow’s religious beliefs were not up front and open, he would not be hated like this. I dont get the world anymore, but whatever. He is a football player, and to be honest, he has been a stellar one in college. I wouldnt mind spending a low second to a third on this guy.
And who cares what he believes in, can he play football, thats the question.

  27. BonnieD says: Mar 27, 2010 12:43 PM

I think you’re right, and I think it is a result of a sort of fatigue people are feeling. The new Christianity is overexposed in the media and in politics. People are growing increasingly tired of religious fundamentalism, just like in the fifties. America is again having an Elmer Gantry moment.

Why must these things always be explained to you? They’re so simple.

  37. DaBeast says: Mar 27, 2010 2:47 PM

Tim Tebow reminds me an awful lot like a young, Steve Young. Those old enough to remember. Steve Young was a great college lefty QB about Tebow’s size (maybe a bit smaller). Young was absolutely dreadful at first in the Tampa Bay classic Pocket QB system. He flopped so badly, they gave up on him and traded him to SanFran. He landed in the right system for a mobile QB and the rest is Hall of Fame history.
Put Tebow in the right system and he will be just as great a pro as he has been at every other level. Put him in a Brady/Manning type system and he will get clobbered and fail. The right team for him is Minnesota, Washington, San Francisco, Cleveland, Arizona and maybe even Miami. The good thing is that because he is likely to go in rounds 3-4 of the draft, he will go to one of those good young teams (except Cleveland) and develop quickly in the background for 1 year. The last thing he needs is to be thrust in the spotlight as a “savior” as a first rounder. In the right system he can learn the speed and the quick reads of a mobile QB system for 1 year because those kind of offenses usually feature strong, bruising running games. After one year in such a system, I think this kid will do what he has done all of his life. Win Championships!
He is religious. So I hope he is praying that he will go to the “Right” team in round 3-4. The big money will come later. If he goes in round 1 it is likely to be the wrong situation (a team only looking for a “Wildcat” option). If he ends up in San Fran especially, I predict true greatness for him as he develops with that emerging, new young dynasty. They will only need a QB like him in 2011 to be SuperBowl bound. Singletary is creating a monster in the Bay. And Tebow is his huckleberry, I believe. And I am a Bear’s fan to boot.

  38. 30PTBUCK says: Mar 27, 2010 3:06 PM

For Tebows sake I sure hope he doesn’t land in Minny. Favre wouldn’t do squat to help him.He didn’t help with Aaron because of jealousy and Tim would take away way to much of Bretteny’s precious spotlight.
Bretteny once stated that it was his job to play not to coach(I guess that doesn’t include GM duties) and he did everything he could to undermine #12
As for you Morons that critcize Tebow because he has faith (I’m not as good of a Chritian as that man) go to hell. Save your venom for criminals terrorists and politicians that are trying to tell you what you have to do for health care and are turning over enforcement to the IRS that is hiring 86,000 new agents

I “clicked on the link” to see what was being done surreptitiously to ensure he went earlier than he should.
“I would almost bet my house that if Tebow’s religious beliefs were not up front and open, he would not be hated like this.” (Be glad you said almost.)
While his whoring of his religious beliefs is ridiculously allowed it merely presents an opening for those disgusted ones to use to an advantage. The Yankees are both one of the most beloved and the most hated teams in baseball. The Cowboys used to be the same way in football. Why among the most hated? For one thing, the constant attention and praise of the sportscasters, whether it has been earned or not.
Nobody likes to have a “hero” shoved down their throats like the sports press loves to do with Tebow. This is not a pun on his religious beliefs, but it is like the sports press thinks he walks on water.
We’re “interested because we click on a link” is like saying we want to see that train crash (you know the one they always mention) you just can’t look away from. That’s why I click on a story about Teboohoohoo. I’m ready to see someone in the sports press actually admit he’s done.

  49. DaBeast says: Mar 28, 2010 4:00 PM

    Hey C.Bass:
Seneca doesn’t suck! Holmgren could have had Hasselbach if he wanted him. Pete Carrol was trying to unload that injury prone tease. But Holmy chose/Stole Wallace instead. He sees something there, and maybe the kid is now ready blossom unless Mangenius screws him up like he did Favre in NY, Anderson and Quinn in Cleveland. Holmy did the same thing when he went to GB and then to Seattle. He picked a Favre who was dying on a bench out west and Hass, who was doing the same in GB. Holms has a knack for grabbing those dudes when everyone else has given up and he knows the QB is ready to go. He is a master at stealing young QB talent from comatose GM’s who live in the here and now.
By the way. I think Hass’ days in seattle are numbered. Carrol really wants Leinart, if he can somehow pry him from the Card’s cold dead hands.

  50. green&bold says: Mar 29, 2010 8:11 AM

  51. sand0 says: Mar 29, 2010 8:42 AM

I wonder if any teams are considering Tebow as a short yardage specialist short term and obviously with the hope that he develops into more long term.
Bring him under center in 3rd and 1 and I think you would force the defense into some predictable looks that perhaps you can take advantage of. He would just have to prove that he could make a pass enough of the time to keep a defense honest.
He doesn’t have to sneak every time but that would be the base play that they use to get teams to stack the middle. Then the off tackle holes might be a little softer. That came out kind of gross but you get the idea.
