End of Steelers' 2010 season could be affected by hockey plans

0102 B1 Crosby 4 BW.jpgThe NHL’s first Winter Classic — a January 1 open-air hockey game televised by NBC — featured the Penguins and the Sabres (pronounced “Sab-rays“) in Buffalo.  The next NHL Winter Classic could also feature the Penguins, at home.

At Heinz Field.

According to Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “things are falling into place” for the Pens to host the Washington Capitals on January 1 at the place where the Steelers play their home games.

Though Molinari says that “approximately two weeks” will be needed to build and prep an outdoor rink, Molinari also says that the Steelers are expected to host their home finale on Thursday, December 23, which would give the crew less than nine days to cover the turf with a platform coated in ice.  The possibility that the Steelers will host a playoff game in the wild-card round would give the powers-that-be at least a week to restore the venue to its football configuration.

Per Molinari, PNC Park has been ruled out due to the larger seating capacity at Heinz Field.  (We also think it would be more than a little embarrassing for the Penguins to draw more fans to the baseball park than the baseball team that plays there ever could.)

Either way, here’s hoping that none of the pucks flip through the air, hit the ice, and stop in place.

Why would it be embarrassing to outdraw the baseball team? They probably already outdraw the baseball team by a LOT playing in an arena with half the seating capacity of the baseball stadium. Of course they’ll outdraw them.

it’d be nice to see a team that isn’t…you know…the penguins. it’s great having that team shoved down our throats by gary bettman every chance he gets.
i mean, we’ve seen the penguins, sabres, blackhawks, red wings, flyers, and bruins so far. how about capitals vs rangers at yankee stadium or citi field?
the NHL pisses me off. they do everything wrong and gary bettman is ruining a great sport.

First of all, Hines Field is bad enough already. Does anyone remember when they hosted like 3 night games in 4 weeks, and they were all mud-bowls because it rained so much and their grounds crew couldn’t keep up with it?
Secondly, the Penguins already got to play in the Winter Classic. Why do they get another one so soon? The NHL finally got it right and decided to have their best player, Ovechkin, in the Winter Classic. But why do they have to play in Pittsburgh? I’m pretty sure the Caps have sold out every home match the last 2 years.
Guess the NHL sees that Ovechkin has swept Crosby this NHL season and they don’t want him to take the lead in the overall head-to-head series from their little golden boy.

Yankee Stadium has been booked for the next 5 years for football games (BIG EAST) so the NY teams will have to either find someone else in the city capable to make it happen or wait. Anyways the NHL/NBC is trying to put the best game on the market to bring in the most for the ratings, just look at the last game against these teams. It would be nice if we had a baseball owner that wanted to do more for the fans than have them look at the scenery beyond the field than what he is putting on the field. And Florio, with your last comment “stop in place” you’d be better if you stayed with football.

Suspend Rapesagirl now and book the hockey game, there is no way the Steelers will make the playoffs without Rapesagril at QB and a pretty good chance they wouldn’t make it even if he holds off on raping more girls and actually plays football this season.

  27. psycaz says: Mar 28, 2010 3:39 PM

So much for rotating the teams. How stupid to constantly show the Pens instead of anyone else. But that’s Gary.

I may be biased, as I’m a Rangers fan, but it only makes sense to have on the more popular teams hosting the Winter Classic. I would love it if the Rangers got such a chance.
I love the Winter Classic, so in the end, it doesn’t matter who’s playing as long as it’s played somewhere really cold and snowy looking.
It seems like it would make more sense if the game was played in the Pirates baseball stadium to avoid any scheduling controversy with the NFL.

  29. callmecougar says: Mar 28, 2010 4:04 PM

I love the irony of it. 95% of the morons who make an effort to run their mouths about the Steelers either (a) have poorer grammar and written communication proficiency than my 4-year-old niece, or (b) are fans of teams that are 10 times worse off with regard to the things they criticize the Steelers about (i.e., Ravens fans running their mouths about Steeler legal issues). I understand that people sometimes don’t think before they talk, but you at least have the chance to read what the garbage you spout out before clicking Submit.
As for the Winter Classic, I would be stoked to see it in Pittsburgh. At the same time, if it were to actually happen, I can understand fans of other teams being annoyed about this. Three years is a quick turnaround given the available options.

Why have the Penguins in the game again already? The NHL has already screwed up by having 2 teams from northern cities every year instead of having a northern team face a team from the south where they can’t host a Winter Classic. Now they are already doubling up on a team? Come on now Bettman, get your head out of your *SS and just play the game in Washington, where is should be cold enough and where you likely don’t need to worry about the football team making the playoffs. Have the Capitals host a team like the Kings or Sharks or even Tampa for that matter so you don’t need to worry about using a potential host team as the vistors.

How are you comparing fanbases between Pittsburgh and a city with a population 20-some times the size of it? The Rangers could lose every game every year and enough morons would still pay to watch them to keep the team financially afloat simply because the region has the population to support it. It doesn’t even make sense to compare the two.

For everyone complaining abbot the Sab-Rays pronunciation, it is a joke from ‘The Office’. Take it easy on the author. He was just trying to be culturally relevant.
