Frank Gore not thrilled with three-headed backfield

FrankGore.jpgDe facto 49ers G.M. Trent Baalke recently has said that the Niners might try a three-headed monster at tailback.  The team’s current workhorse, Frank Gore, isn’t a fan.

Personally I wouldn’t like it,” Gore said of the concept, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

Whether Gore likes it, of course, doesn’t matter.  The Saints won a Super Bowl with three tailbacks, and the NFL remains a copycat league.

Besides, it makes sense.  The approach tends to keep players healthy, and it can extend careers.

It also keeps players from becoming superstars and commanding huge contracts, which explains why Gore doesn’t like it.

Hey if they don’t ask him to take a pay cut as a result he should STFU and be happy he won’t have as much wear and tear on his body.

“Frank Gore not thrilled with three-headed backfield.”
It’s VERY strong RB class this year, maybe he’s afraid a “young gun” will steal his thunder and carries.

  5. GoBrowns19 says: Mar 29, 2010 10:18 PM

It worked for the saints because they also have a QB that can throw for 4000 yards a season. The two headed monster is the fad that will stick…three is too many unless all three are equally mediocre.

  6. ☻☼CBS, FOX, ESPN, NFLN nbc says: Mar 29, 2010 10:18 PM

Just like Nnamdi is an overrated corner, Frank Gore is one pf the most overrated RB’s in the league.
It’s injury after injury after fumble with that guy

  7. red13 says: Mar 29, 2010 10:19 PM

Or maybe the explanation is that Gore doesn’t like because he’s a competitor and wants to lead his team. I’ve never heard a bad word said about Frank by any of his teammates. And he flew in to be with his team instead of working out in Florida. Stop with the contrived controversy, Florio. There are some good guys in the NFL, and Gore seems to be one of them.

  8. CookieFlash says: Mar 29, 2010 10:20 PM

I think anything that may help you stay in the league longer would be good. We all know the shelf life of a RB and sharing the wear and tear should be a good thing.Plus if you’re a great back you will STILL be a great back. Its not like your talent disapears just because you have company in the backfield. I understand less carries mean less yards but not if you’re awesome.

  9. TheInconvenientTruth says: Mar 29, 2010 10:22 PM

No matter what we got frank , hes is a BEAST . goin on 5th consec. 1000 rushing yards season with the 3rd or 4th worst line in the league , he woulda had several near 2000 yard seasons with a good line. Another Good running back to go with a great one is awesome . Frank healthy in dec. is a gooooood thing. No hating on the inconvienant truth , boy ! work horse, pulls the load .

  10. TheGuyWhoToldTimTebowToShutTheFup says: Mar 29, 2010 10:23 PM

    Don’t you need 3 RB’s to have a 3 headed monster? I can’t name 1 decent RB after Gore.

Who cares fat gore, u get played millions to play, so shut up and play. U only had 1 good season anyway.

  12. RavenAttack says: Mar 29, 2010 10:26 PM

The difference between the Saints & 49ers is that the Saints have a quarterback and the 49ers don’t. Yes the three-headed monster of Thomas, Bell & Bush helped but it wasn’t the big reason why they won the Super Bowl. They (The Saints) have weapons while the 49ers rely on Frank Gore & Vernon Davis. The 49ers have a long way to go if they don’t get a quarterback especially a winner. Smih is not the answer nor David “I get sacked a lot” Carr. Plus Flo should know that sometimes a three-headed monster can not always be healthy. Look at Thomas who was injured in the beginning.

  13. PhillyBen says: Mar 29, 2010 10:29 PM

The difference is he already is a superstar , whether they decide to pay him like one or not isn’t a reason to go 3-headed monster because someone will.
Now if they want to extend his career then that is smart, but some RBs like to get in grooves and have the adrenaline going and set up defenders and such so it sounds like this is Gore.

  15. VoxVagina says: Mar 29, 2010 10:35 PM

Maybe it’s not the money he’s concerned about. I think the bigger issue is that Frank Gore is one of the lesser known backs to casual NFL fans but he’s a workhorse back who will pound it out for yards. He doesn’t talk big, he plays big. But with a 3-headed backfield he can’t make a name for himself and have the reputation that Chris Johnson or Adrian Peterson would have. Most NFL players would like to be well known. But your money theory make sense, I just don’t think that Gore is the type of guy that cares more about money

Are you kidding comparing Saints rb’s to Frank Gore? They have 3 backs because they don’t have one good every down back! If Reggie Bush was a every down back the others would hardly play. Not a Saints or 49er fan but come on comapring Saints backs to Gore is ridiculous.

  28. agreen182 says: Mar 30, 2010 12:02 AM

Yes, Frank Gore, always known for his haughty attitude. The guy who was found bawling in a payphone after he heard that the team gave him a contract extension. Give me a break dude. Pretty sure it has more to do with him wanting to be “the guy” than it does money.

  29. PersonalFoul says: Mar 30, 2010 12:07 AM

Gore has been a workhorse and carrying the load since his UM days.. Kid is a beast! He is only 26 and his best is yet to come! A strong compliment back would be great. But if Smith’s light goes off, then the NFC better watch out for the 49ers!

  30. michael says: Mar 30, 2010 12:07 AM

Gore should be pissed. 3RBs didn’t help the Saints win a passing offense the ranked in the top 5 did. That argument is out the window. If you have a RB that proved he could carry the load get him help not take away more than half his carries.

  31. Bay9er says: Mar 30, 2010 12:08 AM

Gore is a beast, and does have a back-up in Coffee, but his body could use a break throughout the season. Gore’s comments most likely reflect the 9ers interest in CJ Spiller, who could fill a valuable role, PLAYMAKER! He’s explosive out of the backfield, can split out wide, and would be an immediate upgrade in the return game.
But this is all for not if we don’t fix the OL.
Draft best OT with the #13 (unless there’s a Crabtree-like fall by a top prospect like Suh, McCoy, Berry, Spiller, ect.). Then go for BPA or trade back for an extra 2nd with the #17 pick
    Go 9ers.

  35. SonOfNOLA says: Mar 30, 2010 12:44 AM

    @Naps
Sean Payton’s the reason why we don’t have an every down back. Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush are capable of being every down backs, but in Sean Payton’s offense everyone gets to touch the ball.

  36. Raider8Earl says: Mar 30, 2010 1:00 AM

Use him more, not less. Well, you know we don’t have an air attack yet.

  37. dogma1 says: Mar 30, 2010 1:17 AM

So the 49ers want to make the team better but Gore doesn’t like it? nice, real nice. If CJ Spiller is on the board when the 49ers pick they are taking him.

  38. HC says: Mar 30, 2010 1:22 AM

Gore has either missed a few games down the stretch, or has been limited by injury down the stretch more than once. If the 49ers want to play in week 18 and beyond they need him healthy, and the best chance of that happening is to split the carries. The whole ‘feature back’ concept of a RB who gets 300 or 400 touches a season is a thing of the past; all that does is burn a guy out after two or three years.

  39. buzzsaw says: Mar 30, 2010 1:33 AM

so they’ll take spiller in the draft and have a two headed, and then add michael robinson? coffee didnt do much last yr so im not sure where #3 would come in

  41. John_Claytons_Football_Career says: Mar 30, 2010 2:24 AM

The 49ers don’t use Gore to his abilities at all. For some reason theyre a pass first team with Alex Smith. It’s stupid.

  42. mjk68 says: Mar 30, 2010 2:31 AM

Unless that o-line gets better youre three headed monster is going to look like puff the magic dragon.

  43. bruce says: Mar 30, 2010 3:20 AM

has to be a slow day. Anyone who truly follows the niners would know that Frank is not All about the $$$. He truly believes he gets better with more touches and I see his logic. More carries for this tank means more opportunities to bust the long one.

  44. Jim says: Mar 30, 2010 5:37 AM

What was the “GM”, and I use the term loosely, smoking that allowed him to see a 3 headed monster?? Frank Gore is better than all 3 of New Orleans backs combined. The Niners better find a better backup first of all before dreaming up 3 headed monsters! Coffee is not even a suitable backup, much less worthy of taking any measurable time away from Gore. Plus, why would they need 3 backs anyway, only one or two teams had fewer rushing attempts than SF last season.

  45. OscarMooseFarmer says: Mar 30, 2010 5:56 AM

LewD is exactly right.. His ankles and reconstructed knees are going to love it.
Besides, it would mean what? He only gets 20-25 touches instead of 25-35 in a game..?

  46. SFrancis1680 says: Mar 30, 2010 6:21 AM

he doesn’t have to like it,…running backs tend to hit the wall at 30, & Gore sometimes has a hard time staying healthy for a 16 game season

  47. Big Stretch says: Mar 30, 2010 8:23 AM

isn’t it necessary to have 3 really good RBs on the roster to pull that off? I could see it being Gore and then a 2 headed cartoon monster backing him up.

  48. KOBuffalo says: Mar 30, 2010 8:26 AM

maybe he’s afraid a “young gun” will steal his thunder and carries.
Sort of like phenom Glen Coffee did last year??
Gore is the stud RB who needs a solid 20+ carries to get the groove. I don’t see the Niners interrupting that flow. If he’s healthy (admittedly an issue), he’s the man.
If only he could pass the ball, too!

  49. CurseofBoJackson says: Mar 30, 2010 8:52 AM

Feasible situation from an outside perspective, but I wouldn’t expect Gore’s carries to be too limited, guy’s a freakin animal on the field, love to watch him run. That said, i think a lot of Coffey, who filled admirably last year when needed. Another capable back and a little more from Mr. Smith could spell trouble for the NFC West. Don’t limit him to less than 20 or so a game though, IMO that would cause problems on multiple levels.

Nothing personal to Gore, but he’s not the bellcow he thinks he is. Sure, in 2006 he lit it up because he ran hard and broke tackles because he knew 49er management would give him a new contract for his on-the-field performance.
But since he got his new contract… I haven’t seen that hard work. And while he hasn’t gone into to complete tard-land, like Kevan Barlow, he’s not the same back.

New Orleans went to the three back situation out of necessity more than desire. None of those guys is anywhere near the back that Gore is. If SF does this, its another stupid decision by this team that will keep them from restoring the glory that once was the 49ers.

Frank Gore has every right not to like this idea of a 3 back system.
He’s consistently argued the fact that he gets stronger as the game progresses, thus with him sharing carries, he becomes limited.
And plus how often do the copy-cats of the league become successful and win it all anyways? I so sick and tired of people seeing what worked for one team and crying that our team do the same, when we had our greatest success when we were original in our approach (Big receivers, mobile QBs, smaller/quicker OL, True westcoast offense, Dynamic FB)

Not living in the past. Bringing up the past to prove a point. Find it funny that a Ravens fan would mention how important the QB position is to winning…when Baltimore has never had a elite QB. IN THE PAST…the Niners were great with all pro QB’s …CURRENTLY they suck cause they have no QB.
