Steelers spending plenty of time on Big Ben matter

Regardless of whether Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is or isn’t charged with sexual assault in Georgia, we’re hearing that folks who work for the team are spending plenty of time dealing with the various issues that the situation has spawned.

The top item on the to-do list, we’re told, has been monitoring the case.

But while it’s unclear whether the Steelers actively are making plans for a season (or more) without Roethlisberger, a smart team would be — and the Steelers rarely have been accused of not being smart.

Though the outcome remains to be determined, the Steelers have every reason to be concerned.  The amount of time they’re spending on the situation proves that, indeed, they are.

Please one more “story” of how the Steelers are concerned about Ben’s situation. I’m shocked they are, I figured they wouldn’t care one bit. A source or two would be a good idea as well every once in a while.

Hey Florio, what the F*** are you doing with posting a worthless item like this? Your subject line is completely UNSUPPORTED by your “story”! You hear “folks who work for the team are spending plenty of time dealing with the various issues that the situation has spawned”? What does that mean? What specifically did you hear them spending time on? You say it’s “unclear” if they are making plans for a season without him. And you say “Though the outcome remains to be determined…”. Then WTF is your point, other than giving your lynch mob haters yet another thread to spew hate and jokes?
You are really looking like a worthless carnival barker to me. I used to think this was a place where you could keep up with news and exchange opinions. But you have completely trashed this place. It is a joke.
This was a worthless thread that will probably get 100 or more hits with most being as worthless as your “story”.
And if Ben is not charged and suits up for the Steelers, what in the blue hell are you going to say? Will you apologize, Mike?

  6. Snibs says: Mar 29, 2010 7:35 PM

UGH! another mindless, pointless and obvious post. Do you really think its a shock that the Owners of an NFL Franchise are actually spending time and money monitoring their franchise QB? Is that supposed to come as a surprise?
Honestly Florio, a first grader could find more interesting things to write about.
    QUALITY NOT QUANTITY!

  8. Siggy00 says: Mar 29, 2010 7:36 PM

Gee, the Steelers are concerned that their QB may get charged with a crime.
    What’s next? Water is wet?
    Earth-shattering info here Florio.

  9. JSpicoli says: Mar 29, 2010 7:37 PM

It points to the problems of the Steelers in controlling their players and how despite how you bow to the Rooneys without cause, they are leading a team out of control, and the fish rots from the head.

  10. 8man says: Mar 29, 2010 7:37 PM

Still no charges. And I don’t think he will be charged. Apparently, he no longer has an accuser.

  12. PFTiswhatitis says: Mar 29, 2010 7:39 PM

Nothing is going to come of the case. But Ben really made a mess of things. He doesnt seem to have the professionalism needed for an organization like the Steelers to build a team around. The Steelers realize that it can all come crashing down due to his bad choices. First the motorcycle accident, now this stuff. He’s proven he cant be trusted.

  15. ItalianArmyGuy says: Mar 29, 2010 7:40 PM

“the Steelers rarely have been accused of not being smart” —
You obviously don’t read your own blog, Florio, LOL!!
You really act as though he just won a Super Bowl. The guy couldn’t throw his way out of trouble against Oakland and Cleveland last year. The Steelers, as Mike Tomlin said, were legitimately a 9-7 team last year. That’s pretty much what they look like on paper going into this year, if they don’t make some serious changes on offensive and defensive lines and in the defensive backfield – which they apparently are not. Their only moves in those areas this off-season have been to give bigger money to their already overpaid, overaged players in those areas, and to bring in a couple of special teams/backup guys from losing teams. These problems will not be quickly remedied with the draft, and last year’s drafted players from those units were all pretty much busts.
Anyway, don’t overhype this problem with Ben, Florio. The Steelers won’t be sniffing a Super Bowl again anytime soon, and they can go 9-7 or better with a wide receiver (Kordell), a career backup (Tomczack), an Arena football league guy (Tommy Maddux), etc… You get the drift.
As a Steeler fan, I don’t really care if they sit him a year, or if he gets the boot. They’ve got a high enough draft pick this year to grab one of the winningest college qb’s ever (Tebow), who they could groom, and they will probably be in about the same draft area the next couple of years if they want to wait this draft out.

  16. jbruder02 says: Mar 29, 2010 7:41 PM

Florio has no sources with the Steelers. He just felt like writing something and came up with this for God knows what reason.

Big Ben and Santonio to Arizona!! GoodBYE!! I’d rather LOSE than have this guy lead the Steelers any longer!! I think any Pittsburgher with any class feels the same way!! Enough is Enough!!

  21. blitzburgh1 says: Mar 29, 2010 7:45 PM

  25. johnnydom says: Mar 29, 2010 7:51 PM

If the Steelers were smart and I repeat if they were smart they would part with this problem now. The only way this goes away is if he writes a BIG check and then again it may not go away.
Other players in the NFL have been in trouble and been suspended and here Ben is accused yet again and why is no one talking to this idiot.
I am not a Steeler fan I am a football fan and this is another black eye on the good NFL players. The ones that don’t beat their wives or girlfriends, rape or allegedly sexually assult women, stab and kill 2 people before the Super Bowl in Atlanta, drive drunk and kill people or do drugs.
Way to go Steelers way to discipline someone who is clearly out of control and is an arrogant asshole who thinks he is above the law.
I certainly hope he is wearing a nice orange jumpsuit behind bars soon.

Hey Holeinone: Here’s an idea, go to another site and shut your freaking pie hole you Steeler apologist. Your post proves why it makes sense for Florio to post this. If Ben is not charged & suits up for the Steelers, no Florio will not apologize. Why, because Ben is a joke and clearly a complete idiot. I don’t here this crap about Hines, Troy, Heath, etc. Ben is guilty of being a TRAILER PARK TRASH YINZER.

  27. abfish15 says: Mar 29, 2010 7:54 PM

Seriously Florio – enough. Do you have any journalistic credentials or experience at all? This site is becoming unreadable – a worthless blog with no real reporting. There’s no source or quotes or anything substantive in any of these Roethlisberger “stories.” Stop fishing for hits and wait until someone else breaks some real news so you can link to it…

  28. Whines_Hard.86 says: Mar 29, 2010 7:55 PM

I think Florio worked out some deal with Ben. He offered him a large check, and some awful legal advice, in exchange for Ben putting himself in a couple of questionable situations. Every time there is an article about Ben on here, it always ends up on the most commented page. Florio should be fixing Ben’s TV every night for the rest of his life.

This is yet another one of those “Duh” moments in threadlining that occasionally crop up on PFT. No, Mike, the Squealers organization couldn’t be bothered in the slightest about their franchise QB screwing anything in panties “WHETHER SHE WANTS IT OR NOT” (scare quotes Big Ben’s). They’re all just cokin’ and jokin’ and putting back an Iron City or two together in front of the tube; not a care in the world for the lot.

  34. FedorTheChamp says: Mar 29, 2010 8:00 PM

At Least you can’t cry RACISM like you did with Kordell Stewart!! Steeler Fans have called Roethlisberger everything under the sun and have completely shunned this guy for his actions. I could care less if he was let go tomorrow! He and his Devil shirt can go to Arizona with wisenhunt and grimm for all I care! The Steelers will still be a DAMN good team and guess what I’d still take Dennis Dixon over half of the Quarterbacks in the Steelers division!! Carson Palmer = Crap! Browns QB’s are a disaster! Flacco would be the only hurdle that Tomlin and Dixon would have to overcome and IT CAN BE DONE!! Dennis Dixon did about the same as Big Ben did when he played his first game against the Ravens! The defense LOST that game not Dixon! Yeah the interception was his fault but the Steelers Defense put Dixon in some precarious situations all night long! I predict The Steelers go 11-5 or 10-6 3 out of the first 5 seasons with Dixon and Big Ben becomes a distant memory! Once again I’ll take Dennis Dixon over 90% of the QB’s currently in the AFC North!!

There are 2 different factors working here now. The criminal investigation and the NFL. Ben should worry more about the name Rooney and the NFL than the lady in question in GA. The Rooney’s will cut him as fast as you can say hello. His BIG money doesn’t start till this year. He got the 102 million contract but it is over 8 years on a sliding scale. The Rooney’s weren’t as dumb as the Falcon’s owner.
He’s going to get charged. That’s all it takes, it doesn’t need to be a conviction. These are the Steelers afterall and now they have another headache with Holmes. Don’t think heads won’t roll soon. Also, the head coach SUCKS. Yeah, yeah he got a SB ring but he got it with the team Cowher put together.

The Steelers have always been a running team. Just recently they have been in the air. Bruce Ariens got chewed out by the Rooneys about them throwing so much. Poor Willie, they screwed him over. Mendenhall is “Mr. Fumble”…what a waste of a draft pick. Mewelde Moore kicks his butt!
I hope Ben is gone. Cut him before the real money kicks in. His image is tarnished anyways. He’ll be remembered as a QB with 2 SB rings – and didn’t he rape some girls? The Steelers are interested in Leftwich again but he would have to be released from the Bucs.

    ——————————————
No, I’m sorry, that is NOT how the business works. For one thing, reporter/blogger are not synonymous. Florio is not a reporter. He isn’t sourcing stories–going out like Shefter and other reporters, building contacts, checking facts, getting the scoop. He’s a blogger who gathers material from other news sites, mixes in his own commentary, and posts it to generate page clicks. It’s a legitimate business–but it isn’t journalism.
Beat reporters like Shefter build their reputations on being right. Their league sources have to be reliable and are often confirmed by secondary sources before they go with the material. Even so, sometimes they get the story wrong. Get it wrong too often, and they’re out of a job. That’s why Shefter can’t gamble on running with every bit of nonsense he hears. Blogging is a different world. Florio’s job is to generate page clicks. It doesn’t matter if the info is fact, gossip, or silly speculation.
Different businesses. Different objectives. Different standards.

Tomlin is doing NOTHING with his “kids”. Cowher would have chewed these guys up one side and down the other. Where’s Ben, crawled into his little hole I’m guessing. I doubt he shows up for mandatory practice. I’m sure the Rooneys’ are steaming hot about this! They’ll make excuses for him and he’ll get hurt this year. Prediction only. Oh, BunnyHop …
It’s kinda cute to see how much fun you’re having. Bless your heart. I didn’t realize how much you’d suffered all … these … long … long … long … dry … years.
I’m so sorry mean, arrogant Steelers fans picked on you. Well, you just revel in our misery, Sweetie. Maybe it will provide some solace for you next season when the Brownies go 2-14.
    Kisses! ;-)

if you really wanted to “monitor” this guy, tell him to get his ass into camp !
where is he if you really care that much?

  74. Beauregard says: Mar 29, 2010 11:39 PM

I’ll admit it, I kinda like the Steelers at times.
But I also have three attractive daughters.
I’ve had big dumb jock types hanging around my house for years trying to date my girls. I can spot this type of “worship me” jerkwads a mile away.
Big Ben is a scumbag egotistical bully who thinks he can take whatever he wants. And the dick-hole fans who stick by him no matter what are not any better.
Attacking the victim(s) and blindly defending this sexual predator does nothing for the Steeler image.
Steelers can do better. Much better.

yeah. this organization is rotten from the top hence the two super bowls in four years. Super Bowls start at the top.
    Go back to sleep.

You guys need to stop trashing talking Florio, this is a great a great site and way too many people disrespect him. You Steeler fans need to grow up.

The only person more concerned about the Big Ben Story is….Mike Florio

    “..Regardless of whether..”
    “..is or isn’t charged..”
    “..we’re hearing..”
    “..we’re told..”
    “..But while it’s unclear..”
“..Though the outcome remains to be determined..”
All of the above, in a span of only five sentences.
    Florio, you’re a real piece of ****.

  79. Jack Burton says: Mar 30, 2010 8:25 AM

Where’s the “concern for Santonio” story at Florio?

  80. finsbooyah says: Mar 30, 2010 9:47 AM

Raider Pride, I know it has nothing to do with this thread, but that was one of the best posts in a long time.
Also, for everyone hating on Florio for not revealing his sources… NO ONE in the news industry reveals their sources… NOT EVER! Get a grip

  81. Deb says: Mar 30, 2010 5:51 PM

    @Beauregard …
Hate to dispute a father’s magical ability to discern guilt in the absence of evidence, but … there is an absence of evidence. And I’d like to make sure your girls are protected from real predators, not imaginary ones. The facts so far:
Nevada: Accused had sex with hotel employee. A year later she filed $3 million civil suit claiming rape. Police said there’s no evidence a crime occurred. At least one person has said in sworn affidavit she bragged about sex w/accused and said she hoped she was pregnant. Her time-stamped text messages dated two days after the alleged assault talk of looking forward to seeing accused at a VIP dinner. Other parts of her story also conflict.
Georgia: Accused and his party met accuser and her party out clubbing. Sometime later, she approached a police officer and said the accused “sexually manipulated” her. Police have said there was no rape and no semen on the accuser. We don’t know what she’s alleging he did. Police have released nothing further. She, too, has hired a civil litigator to pursue money.
So … right now all the authorities have released are two unsubstantiated accusations and no evidence of wrongdoing. But you’ve got him convicted and everyone else is “blind.” Uh-huh.

    @ Beauregard
Lifelong Steeler fan. I don’t have daughters but I do have a mother, stepmother, sisters, nieces, aunts, cousins, friends and a girlfriend.
You’re right. On a personal level the Steelers can do much better than this jerk. But look at the facts of this story. The facts. This guy is ACCUSED of “sexual assault”. There has been no clear description released as to what he supposedly did to this young woman. She’s drunk enough at the hospital to show a blood alcohol level of .20+. Officials in Georgia no longer want a DNA sample from Ben.
He’s building a personal monument to asshole behavior. I just don’t think that he’s actually guilty of anything other than being a tool.

Funny stuff here Mike. all this todo about a guy who spent more time on HIS BACK in Cleveland than all these peoples mothers combined. (well maybe just as much) I can’t go by just hear say. Haha. Keep up the good work!

  84. Deb says: Mar 31, 2010 12:46 PM

    @the ill-conceived browns fan …
Yes, allegations of rape and sexual assault are hilarious. So are jokes about people’s mothers spending time on their backs. Glad you registered to comment. You’ve definitely added class to the discussion. Speaking of class … how are things in sixth grade?

All you Big Ben haters are just jealous—if any of you losers had girlfriends or wives, they would trample you down on the way out the door if Big Ben showed up at your hovel dressed in his Satan shirt. They would eagerly ride off with the greatest QB ever to come out of Ohio and gladly lick up his warm Super Bowl DNA while you bums peeled yourselves of the grimy floor and made your way back to the sofa and your half eaten bag of Cheetos and warm Diet Coke.

  87. brownsfansinceconcieved says: Mar 31, 2010 6:02 PM

    @ Friedrich_Nietzsche
I don’t hate him because he came from ohio. Quite the contrary. I hate him cause I came from pa. Now wipe the bengay(goo) off your chin and take the trash out before your wife gets home.
By the way, When was the last time she was sacked 8 times in 3hrs?
    If you answered—————– never.
    Send her to cleveland.
