"Who dat" license plate could be coming to Louisiana

While playing MSNBC in the background as part of my effort to be remotely versed in political issues and current events in the event Sid Rosenberg of WQAM radio in Miami opts to throw me a curve ball with a non-football question, David Schuster mentioned a bill in the Louisiana Legislature that would authorize a license plate dedicated to the Saints.

The rectangular slab of tin would bear a fleur-de-lis, the Louisiana state seal, and the phrase “Who Dat Nation.”

Since it apparently would not include the word “Saints” or any other NFL-owned trademark, the league would likely not be entitled to a cut.  Which seems a bit unfair, given all the license plates that incarcerated NFL players have made over the past several years.

Uh, the saying goes back FAR LONGER than hip hop has been around, so if you’re going to use this as the standard for this country going down the drain then it’s been doing it for over 100 years.

  17. SonOfNOLA says: Mar 29, 2010 4:28 PM

    @danfinocchio:
This has nothing to do with Hip Hop. The chant dates all the way back to the 1800′s and taken up by jazz in the 1920′s & 30′s.

Clearly a jab at the NFL and an attempt to bait them in to responding ever since they tried to crack down on “Who-dat” merchandise. As much as my team affiliations mandate that I hate the Saints, I say good on them for poking the NFL in they eye.

Just keep up with the upcoming freakin’ draft Florio; that’s what we want to know about.
Leave the making of the license plates for all those knuckle draggin’ faithful down in the Bayou toilet to the boys at the Louisiana State pen.

I hope they do make a who dat license plate, then someone from N.O. should drive their vehicle up to Miniature-sota and take photos of it everywhere, as remembrance of the one that got away, or should I say the 5 turnovers that got away. But hey at least you have Favre coming back after training camp right?…and Peterson’s going to take some ball holding lessons from some pornstars, so you guys are going to be ok. Don’t worry.

Well yeah, it’s impossible to find a cable news network that isn’t horribly biased. I try to stay away from any of those commentators (Billo, Beck, Hannity, Olbermann, Maddow, etc) because they’re all just overpaid windbags feeding into the hysteria. Unfortunately this country is so full of complete morons that just listen to the people saying things they want to agree with, nobody’s willing to listen to the other side AT ALL. The future of politics in this country is going nowhere but downhill…

Gosh darn it, all of us morons here in Louisiana didn’t know that! Geez, we’ve been saying “Who dat?” because we really were wondering who was going to beat the Saints, not because it’s a saying that’s tied to the area culturally and historically. Thanks so much, America, for letting us swamp kids down here know that “dat” is not a word. We would have *NEVER* figured this out without you.
I also just learned that the correct spelling is “go,” not “geaux.” What would we do without our Internet friends from around the country to point this out to us?

Besides Digital Audio Tape (and I remember that), it’s also defined as:
Representing the pronunciation of that in West Indian, Irish, or U.S. black speech, from 1680s.

I watch in amusement at the pure ignorance of people who stomp on New Orleans with absolutely no regard for facts. Every are of our country has people who speak in some slang, expressions like ay, yous guys, etc. The difference is that we incorporated this into a sports chant and won the SuperBowl so people are jealous, especially those like Minnesota fans who have never won a championship. And oh by the way, for the last time, the city wasn’t destroyed by a natural disaster, it was destroyed by the Army Corp of Engineers. READ PEOPLE!!

You might want to do a little independant legal research before issuing a story like this.
Some folks from “Who Dat, Inc.” are actively sending demand letters to any company using this phrase and their ownership of this phrase has already been proven. Lest they want to open a giant bowl of gumbo legal mess for the state, they might want to stay away or rephrase this copyrighted phrase.

Since I don’t say it, you’re barking up the wrong tree – as well as being wrong about it not being a word. BTW, boozhoo isn’t in the English dictionary but it IS a word.

(oooh – and that was the correct tense as well – from a SAINTS fan of all people!!!)…but i will admit – despite my love for the city – being built in a BOWL below sea level – is just askin’ for trouble – not often – but once is often enough…

Florio, you had to know that the mere mention of MSNBC to your intellectually challenged user base would deliver a torrent of hits and negative comments, which most likely was the purpose of the mention as opposed to fielding a potential non-football question in a future interview.

Slogans and chants aren’t suppose to be proper english. You assholes obviously must not be getting any pussy or still live with your parents for you to be worrying about something so small, or it’s probably because your team or city isn’t getting any spotlight you feel you have to constantly insult the state of Louisiana so you can make up for any insecurity that you have. You’re only making yourselves look like classless idiots!

I hear Minnesota is going to issue Viking-themed plates. The three finalists for the slogan on the plate are:
    1) Vikes…Always sucking in the clutch
    2) Fifth time is the charm, we hope!
    3) Losing when it counts like a chumpion!
Why don’t you losers take a little road trip to GB to take a look at a Lombardi Trophy. That’s probably as close as you’ll ever get to one.

    ——————————————————————-
Here’s the “cultural” meaning of the saying Who Dat.
Way, way back in 2005, a pimp and his prostitute were walking down Bourbon Street. All of a sudden, the Pimp yelled “Run Bitch, Katrina is coming! She then responded with,”Katrina??? Who Dat??? They grabbed some free TVs from the nearest Best Buy, and made off like bandits. The rest as they say, is history.

  52. edgy1957 says: Mar 29, 2010 7:43 PM

BTW, guys, if you’re going to stroke out about “Dat”, how about those intellectual morons from Chicago, who talk about Da Bears or Da Bulls? If you’re honest with yourselves, you’ll find that a lot of places aren’t that different from New Orleans, Cincinnati or Chicago but you don’t want to admit it.
Finally, English is a low German language and there are many words in English that are bastardized German words, like salt and contains bastardized versions of words that were French, Spanish, Native American, Latin, etc. and yet, you boobs don’t seem to take offense when they’re used here. I’m not from Louisiana (Ironically, I’m from Chicago) but I can’t help but get ticked off at how you guys like to treat these guys as fools. You sore losers should just get over it. The Super Bowl has long passed and you’re not going to get the season back. Just move on and get ready for next year, instead of trying to mollify your disappointment in how your team performed by taking it out on the Saints and their fans.

  53. burntorangehorn says: Mar 29, 2010 7:49 PM

I’ll bet most of the people making fun of MSNBC are FAUX News rubes. “Nevermind the facts; here’s what you should believe!” Face it: cable news channels are the stupid that drives American politics, and the people who think they’re getting real information from them are the reason that stupid is successful.
Anyway, on the topic of “Who dat,” just because it dates back almost 100yrs. doesn’t mean it’s not idiotic to glamorize it. Might as well put a white guy in blackface in a Saints uniform on the license plate while they’re at it.
