Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams recently collected a $9.5 million bonus, which serves not only as a big chunk of change for Williams but also as a big statement from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones that the team is completely invested in Williams as a starting wide receiver.
But Williams acknowledges that, based on the way he played last season, it would be completely reasonable for Cowboys fans -- and even his own teammates -- not to have much faith in him.
“My biggest disappointment is not being able to help the team,” Williams said Monday, per Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Star-Telegram. “I felt like I didn’t do anything last year. I dropped balls and what not. I didn’t think my name would be on top of the drop list ever in my life. It was a humbling experience. It showed me I better get my life together.”
After the Cowboys were bounced out of the playoffs, Williams was asked how he felt about quarterback Tony Romo not throwing him the ball, and he answered, “it pisses me off.” But Williams said Monday that he understands if Romo has lost faith in him.
“Of course if I throw to a guy in the game and he is tripping by not catching the ball I would lose confidence in him, too,” Williams said. “He won’t say it publicly, but what quarterback wouldn’t lose trust. I’m going to try to get in good with him and be his buddy. You have to make plays in the game to get the ball and get plays drawn for you. I have to make plays.”
If Williams doesn’t make a lot more plays in 2010 than he did in 2009, then Jerry Jones just wasted $9.5 million.
