Ellis Hobbs, Chris Gocong sign RFA tenders

As the deadline for signing offer sheets creeps closer, restricted free agents who have yet to get a serious sniff from other teams are now choosing to ink their deals.

The latest?  Eagles cornerback Ellis Hobbs and linebacker Chris Gocong.  The team announced the moves earlier today.

The Eagles had tendered Hobbs at the first-round level.  Gocong was tendered at the third-round level.

Gocong, a third-round pick in 2006, started 11 games in 2009 and 12 in 2008.  Hobbs had been a consistent starter in New England before being traded to Philly last year.  In 2009, he appeared in only eight games.

Hobbs was a great kickoff returner and a productive nickel corner before he got injured. Hopefully he’s healthy this year.
    Gocong just sucks.

It should be noted that Hobbs only got the first round tender because he was paid enough last year that based on the RFA rules there was no cheaper tender to offer.

    Who?………………..and…………………..Who?

You make it sound like Hobbs couldnt get on the field… should point out that he went on IR last year so its kinda hard to appear in a game when your on IR.

You dont know who Ellis Hobbs is? Do you watch football? Do you watch the Super Bowl?

WOW! what happen, no Mcnabb trade yet, all that talk all that sources say stuff, MORONS!!

  7. Gormendez says: Mar 30, 2010 1:34 PM

Gocong has been playing out of position ever since they drafted him. He had 25+ sacks his senior year and had a pair of sacks in the senior bowl and yet the Eagles decided to make him an outside linebacker. He is pure pass rusher and will never be anything unless they move him to DE. He could be a nice player in a 3-4 defense too.

There are rumors Gocong will be traded to the Browns.

You are correct Gormendez. Birds have a way of putting players in the wrong spot.

Hobbs got a bad rap in New England because he often played injured and couldn’t perform at his best level. He was also often left on an island with no safety help while injured, and everyone got pissed when he was beat in those situations.
The same people pissed that he got burnt also rarely gave him full credit for the INTs and other very good plays he often did make.
He’s a good #2 corner when healthy and a good kick returner.

    Browns have 3x 3rd Rd. picks…
Heckert knows Gocong could play DE well in a 3-4 Defense…this player has surfaced in Browns news for about a month. Now that they know the price, we’ll just have to see if the pull the trigger and go for signing this RFA and give up one of those 3rd picks. If he’s moved to DE, time wil tell who was right, Heckert past, or Heckert present (again, ‘if’ Gocong would be moved to DE with the Browns)?????????

Hahaha he’s a great kick returner who can’t cover a WR if his life depended on it. He was the Patriots #1 corner in 2008 and they traded him for two fifth round picks (which they later converted into a single, higher 5th round pick) – despite not having a clear #2 corner on the team (or clear #3 lol)

In other news: McNabb hasn’t been traded, but the birds haven’t denied that they’ve traded him already, so there’s a good assumption that the deal has already been made……or not……
Another article, in Philly, gets to the bottom of the alleged “puke or not puke” theory…. but, will we see that article posted on this blog?!?

Gocong is not bad, some people say he can’t cover others say he can’t play the run, I say mediocre most of the time and to be honest that’s better than a lot of the trash that’s out there.

  15. Brownie says: Mar 30, 2010 1:57 PM

Ellis Hobbs is the man. He’s a little undersized but plays with a lot of heart and is a solid kick returner. I wish my team would have gotten him, but unfortunately he’s probably not worth a first-round pick. I would give up a 2nd-round pick in second.

  16. joebuckiscreepy says: Mar 30, 2010 2:05 PM

Gocong has sucked since they drafted him. I don’t blame him though….everyone that has said he’s been playing out of position has been right. If we could trade him for a 3rd, I wouldn’t hesitate.

  17. ForeverRebuilding says: Mar 30, 2010 2:08 PM

If Gocong goes to the Brownies, it would be as an OLB, taking Wimbley’s spot. Also, if Cleveland wanted to give up a 3rd rounder for him, they could have signed him to an offer sheet. It’s possible Gocong is signing so that he can be traded for less.

  18. sdffa11 says: Mar 30, 2010 2:17 PM

they need to release gocong. reid did a bad job of scouting him and he is definitely a 3-4 linebacker. hes just taking up roster space and limiting other’s playing time.

Glad to get Hobbs back, adds great depth to the secondary and also we dont have to painfully watch macho do kick returns anymore

Ellis Hobbs…better known as the guy Plaxico Burress burned in the Super Bowl

  21. myeaglescantwin says: Mar 30, 2010 2:54 PM

chris Gocong played DE at Poly. He needs his hand in the dirt as a 4-3 end. He’s athletic enough to keep contain and strong enough to handle right tackles. TERRIBLE PERSONEL MANAGEMENT with this guy.
HOBBS is a nickle back in our system. Thats all we need him to be. Hopefully his neck is fine /
we dont really need him on kick returns although that is a great upside to having him around.

Did you read the story? Gocong signed a 1 year deal. He is an Eagles. Not a RFA.

  23. tighthead says: Mar 30, 2010 7:46 PM

Gocong and Hobbs have a roles to play in the NFL, why all the bashing.
Gocong was an undersize DE(263lbs) in college, who got after the QB. The eagles moved him to LB. He proved to be a solid run defender but terrible in coverage. He has been miscast in philly and has copped plenty of stick for it. He like many players just needs the right situation to be effective.(maybe DE in a 4-3 or OLB in a 3-4). Hobbs is a tallented Returner who can help out a secondary in nickel & dime packages.

  24. Mooch says: Mar 30, 2010 8:41 PM

I think the whole fan base has seen the same thing – Gocong could play OLB in a 3-4, has shockingly little value used the way he is in our defense.
He has great size and speed, just seems to get lost in this scheme – especially in coverage. Maybe Jim Johnson could cover for the traditional deficiencies at LB, but McDermott’s crew were badly exposed (in fact, teams seemed to have figured out a way to attack this defense by keying on specific players). Not sure why they brought him back.
Hobbs is a dime guy, and can be solid in that role. He was a special teams nightmare, I thought I was watching JR Reid with some of his idiotic moves last season.
