Jaguars in negotiations with Reggie Hayward

Unrestricted free agent defensive end Reggie Hayward could be close to returning to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2010.

Michael C. Wright of the Florida Times-Union tweets that two weeks after the Jaguars rescinded their offer to Hayward, the sides are talking again and something could get done soon.

In 2009, Hayward landed on injured reserve after breaking his leg in the regular-season opener. It was the second time in the last four years that Hayward played only one game; he also suffered a season-ending injury in Week One of the 2006 season.

When he has been healthy in recent years the 31-year-old Hayward hasn’t always been effective; he managed only 4.5 sacks in 16 games in 2008.

Hayward’s best season came in 2004, when he recorded 10.5 sacks with the Denver Broncos.

  1. Hayward never really lived up to the free agent contract he got back in 05-06. He took a pay cut last year to stay with the team. Seems like a stand-up guy, but damn Hayward we need pass-rushers like Vince Young needs Chris Johnson and I mean NEED. Hope you come back for a full healthy season, although you’ll most likely be playing in a back-up role. Hell, I say pull Derrick Harvey from his starting gig and give it to Hayward. Can I get an Amen?

  2. Hayward had a very good first year with the Jags in 2005 but tore his achilles in Week 1 of 2006 and was never the same player. For a minimum salary deal, he is a good player to have in the rotation.

  3. I hope he returns and posts a respectable sack total in 2010 (7) . That would be 50% of what the entire team posted in 2009 . ( Do I have to do the math for you Florio?)
Pressuring the passer is a major need and look for the Jags to select Derrick Morgan with the 10th pick in the 2010 draft. However, if the Jerry Jones has fallen in love with Dez Byrant, look for the Cowboys to trade up with the Jags …The Cowboys 27th pick in Rounds 1 and 2 for the 10th overally pick. With the their first round selection the Jags would take Thomas, the safety from Texas , and then they could take Tebow in Round 2….You heard it here first…

Ha. I wonder when people are going to figure this response out.
Oh, hell, I wouldn’t worry about that.
