Jon Beason sees dollar signs

With linebackers like Karlos Dansby and DeMeco Ryans pocketing huge deals recently, Panthers linebacker Jon Beason knows that his payday is coming.

Said Beason in the wake of news that Ryans has inked a six-year, $48 million deal with $21.75 million guaranteed, Beason told the Charlotte Observer, “I don’t have a pen and a notebook or a tape recorder, but let me ask you
a question.  Do you think I’m in the
same class as DeMeco Ryans, or better?”

It sounds like Beason thinks he’s better.  And he may be right.

Especially since Beason compares himself to the current gold standard at linebacker — Patrick Willis of the 49ers.

“The NFL’s done a good job of keeping myself and Patrick Willis joined
at the hip,” Beason said.  “Whether he gets a deal first, or it happens
to be me, the other one’s going to be right behind him.”

The only question is whether Beason will get that deal in Carolina, or whether he’ll have to go elsewhere.

Ryans is an elite middle LB. You don’t hear much about him because he plays for the Texans and he doesn’t yap. He deserves to be one of the top paid LBs – as will Beason and Willis when their contracts come up.
Ryans is not an overpowering type but he overcomes that with quickness and ability to quickly diagnose and shed. He’s a heat seeking missile type where Ray Lewis is a 2000 lb bomb.
Ryans has strong credentials – an AP All Pro, two time Pro Bowler, and Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2006. Great player and an even better guy.

NewEnglandKnuckles83: Beason said once that before the ’07 draft he purposely sabotaged his own workout with the Pats so they wouldn’t draft him. He said they don’t treat their players with respect or something of the sort. I seriously doubt he’d ever sign with them.
And I don’t think there’s a chance he leaves Carolina. He’s THE guy on this team. It used to be Steve Smith, now it’s Beason. They’ll lock him up for sure; it’s like Ray Lewis & the Ravens; seeing him play anywhere else just wouldn’t look right.

Te comment about going elsewhere for a contract: Do you even mention when his contract expires? Do you assume that the Panthers are now a tight franchise because they dumped veterans for rising talent and didn’t splash desperately into a pond of over-priced, washed-up free agents?
The Panthers are triming the fat so that they can extend core veterans like Beason, Davis, Williams, etc.
Why is that hard to believe? What they are doing this year is smart. Let your younger players play–they all showed they could compete on the highest levels in bit parts last season (Connor, Bernadeau, Moore, Martin, Leonard, Tyler).
The Panthers will be in the playoffs in 2010–I am certain. With the addition of a WR or two, depth at DE and LB and maybe DT, they could be an unstoppable offensive force. Don’t spit on the unproven–every player was at one time.

Agreed that he’s good, but I don’t think I’d put him over anyone on my top 5 list, he’s probably my #6. And before the Steeler fan asks about James Farrior since Woodley and Harrison can’t be included on the list, the guy probably wouldn’t make my top 20 list- he sucks.

Its a shame great players are wasted there. Steve Smith and John Beason are top talent players. cant say enough about their play and skills.
If they were dumb enough to give Jake that contract after those surgeries, then they just might be dumb enough to let BEASON walk. Imagine what he could do with a good DL.

Excellent list. You outta be at ESPN because you obviously understand football talent better than Mark Schlerith (spelling?).
I would have Ryans ahead of Fletcher but I bet I am in the minority.
BTW: Has there been a better 2nd round pick since 2000 that anyone else can think of offhand. Maybe Dallas Clark (He was 2nd rd. right?)

  21. Ravenmuscle says: Apr 1, 2010 9:41 AM

Still puzzles me that Terrell Sugg’s contract is omitted…he is listed as a linebacker and he did get a 6 year contract for $63 million with $38 million guaranteed with a $10 million signing bonus. If you are just talking about contract sizes…I don’t understand why his contract is forgotten. Granted he had a poor year due to an achilles injury and being chop blocked by Brady Quinn…still his contract is still there for all to see.

@myeaglescantwin: I guess it takes a real fan to throw snowballs at Santa Claus.
So your team has been around since 1933, been to the Super Bowl twice and lost both times.
Not quite a century of failure but you get the gist.
    @SaintsBucsPanthersSUKK: Couldn’t forget about you.
Your team has been failing since 1965.
So… What’s the point? Panthers have been equally as unsuccessful over a much shorter time-scale.
How about you two start talking that trash when your franchises finally manage to stumble and bumble their way into a championship.

  24. bobbyyyd says: Apr 1, 2010 10:07 AM

thanks incognito! all you Haters make me laugh out loud. Carolina is under the rader everyone thinks they suck and blah blah blah. Remember we had a nasty defense the last 5 games last season, and our running backs are nasty. If we can get a fast receiver that can stretch the field and play smitty in the slot we will surprise lots of haters. That eagles fan brings up opening day in every post for the panthers. Remember when you lost back to back games to the cowgirls? Your team is a joke and when you let McNabb go you’ll really see how shitty your eagles are. As for the dumbass falcants fan. Wasn’t your team on the couch during the playoffs last year too? Didn’t they get beat by the same team carolina got beat by in the 08-09 playoffs? Does it make you feel better to bash on Carolina? I think your just scared of what they are going to do this season.

It has? I think Beason is a little delusional, as he’s the one who’s tried to keep himself joined at the hip with Willis. He’s a good linebacker no doubt, but he needs to stop throwing himself in the same conversation as Willis all the time.
