Dante Wesley will join the Lions

The Detroit Lions have added some depth on defense and special teams by bringing in a veteran cornerback.

Tim Twentyman of the Detroit News reports that the Lions have agreed on a two-year deal with free agent cornerback Dante Wesley. He’ll sign his contract and report to the offseason workout program on Monday.

The 30-year-old Wesley has been in the NFL for eight seasons, including seven with the Panthers. In Carolina he played for assistant coach Danny Crossman, who is now the Lions’ special teams coordinator.

A gunner in punt coverage, Wesley was suspended for a game last season after a brutal hit on Tampa Bay punt returner Clifton Smith.

In addition to playing special teams, Wesley will give the Lions some depth on defense and might even compete for a starting spot, although he has started only two games in his NFL career.
