Redskins officially welcome Donovan McNabb

Though the press conference introducing Donovan McNabb as the next quarterback of the Redskins may not occur until Tuesday, his new team officially welcomed him via a Sunday night press release.

“Donovan is an accomplished quarterback who has been a proven winner in the National Football League,” coach Mike Shanahan said.   “I have long admired his competitiveness and feel he will be an outstanding addition to the Redskins and our community.  He knows our division and the roadmap to success in the NFC East.  He will set a high standard of excellence and we are very excited to welcome Donovan to the Washington Redskins.”

Possible translation?  “We fleeced those bastards.”

Yeah, this is gonna be a great year.

hahahahahah @ “we fleeced those bastards”. I don’t know why but I am laughing my ass off right now, and I’m an Eagles fan.

Shanahan knows better than anyone that Elway won his Super Bowls in his 15th and 16th years.
Donovan has only played 11 seasons and has very good football left, not mention vengeance.

Still waiting for the “April Fools” for some reason,
actually expected Reid to say something similar during his press conference but didn’t.
Redskins acknowledgment means it is official.
    Dayuum.

So I was asked to go to the presser because two years ago when the Eagles were down for the game I shouted from the second row behind the eagles bench that he would be the QB in Washington. Donovan smiled, and now I can’t wait to see him in training camp to remind him that it was me. I am extremely excited because we have a very talented QB that is proven. We can have him for a few more years. He is going to be so welcome in DC. Buying the Mcnabb this year.

  12. pjhurley says: Apr 4, 2010 11:07 PM

Possible translation – we are excited about this quarterback but have nobody to protect him. Actual Translation – Sorry Jimmy Clausen…we are drafting Russell Okung.

Okay so how crazy would it be if the Skins traded McNabb and their 1st rounder for the #1 pick in the draft to select Bradford? Just throwin’ that out there…

  19. realitypolice says: Apr 4, 2010 11:12 PM

Fleeced? The Eagles got exactly what they wanted, a pick in the top 42. Which you said would be impossible once the news got out that that was what they wanted.
So, basically, you post numerous articles saying the Eagles had botched the situation and would never get what they wanted for McNabb, and then when they get exactly what they wanted for McNabb, you say they got “fleeced”.
    Awesome.
That said, no question this trade comes back to haunt the birds.

  25. joe says: Apr 4, 2010 11:15 PM

had to throw an anti-Philly statement in there didn’t you?
I absolutely wouldn’t say anyone was fleeced in this deal, and I resent your bias.
The Eagles got a high second rounder for an aged quarterback who was inevitably going to be traded.
Doesn’t make all that much sense for Skins though, they have a terrible O-line, receiving core, and backfield.
I hope the turf in Washington is comfy for McNabb

  26. psubeerman says: Apr 4, 2010 11:16 PM

D-nabb fixes a few of your problems, not all. You’re not a superbowl team yet. You picked up a very good QB that hasn’t won anything. And for the previous poster, please don’t compare D-nabb to Elway. Never, ever do that. Thanks.

  27. tombrookshire says: Apr 4, 2010 11:16 PM

Eagles FO: greedy, arrogant, self absorbed, conservative, deceptive. Yes. Stupid. No. Unless there is a good, not just decent, offensive line in front of McNabb, and someone tall to throw to, Redskins fans will get to see lots of dirt balls and sacks, followed immediately by that goofy grin of his that galled Eagles fans for 11 years.

  29. The_Game_Esq says: Apr 4, 2010 11:18 PM

I sure hope Shanny doesn’t think he fleeced Philly. Let’s see. The Redskins are far inferior on the offensive line. Don’t have any quality WRs. Have aging and injury prone RBs. And McNabb is supposed to do as good or better in Washington? Work your magic Mike.

  30. ikemac says: Apr 4, 2010 11:19 PM

This is spectacular and I now believe they will address the offensive line correctly. And that the Skins finally have the right guys making the decisions.

  52. SonsCompass says: Apr 4, 2010 11:45 PM

That makes 3 straight years an elite QB has been traded. First Brett Favre, then Jay Cutler, now McNabb. I know there has been others in recent memory also, like Drew Brees, Drew Bledoe, Steve McNair, Joe Montana etc. Who’s next? Tom Brady?

  53. Tiger Woods says: Apr 4, 2010 11:46 PM

Packers refuesed to trade Farve to the Vikings even though they could have gotten a 1st rounder for him and a future 3 or 4. So they settled on a deal to the Jets for only a 3rd rounder. And the traitor still ended up on Grape Ape land.
The Eagles got the same future 3rd rounder for McNabb, and the immediate high 2nd rounder this year. Great deal for Philly as they have Kolb, who looked better than McNabb last year. And they have Vick back.
Great deal for Philly, and a good to great deal for Washington, and a fun deal for the whole NFL.
    Why so many complaints?

Any way these Philly fans spin it, their team handed a future hall of famer for a 2nd rounder and 3rd or 4th rounder. Fleeced? Florio’s putting it mildly. Try totally ripped off.
Kolb may end up being pretty good, but unless he turns out to be as good as D-Mac, the team has gotten worse. Washington’s bad O-line? I hear you can, you know, draft some linemen. As for the “McNabb’s old” nonsense, Warner and Favre are older than he is and last I saw, they could still play pretty good ball. McNabb has some great years left in him. Great move by Shanahan. I hope that McNabb spends the next several years tormenting the Philly fans who never gave him credit for how truly great he is.

  59. lajimmy says: Apr 5, 2010 12:01 AM

I’m not a fan of either team but I can’t see how anyone thinks this a good deal for the Skins. They just picked up a clearly declining QB who will turn 34 during the season. They have mediocre WR’s, old RB’s, and one of the worst Olines in the NFL. Even if McNabb was still as good as he was in his prime ((he isn’t), he doesn’t stand a chance with the supporting cast. The fact the Eagles traded him to a division rival tells you all you need to know about how they view McNabb as a player going forward. He’ll throw the ball at the feet of his receivers for a couple of years and be done.
Contrast that with Philly, who weren’t going to sign McNabb to an extension anyway due to Kolb being ready to start, and because of that were limited as to what they could get for him. They get a high second round pick this year and now have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds of the best draft in a decade.
Fleeced? We should all hope our favorite teams get fleeced like this. This is why Philly is a contender most years and why the Skins are in a constant state of disaray. Why does this team keep throwing away draft picks?

  60. doobie1884 says: Apr 5, 2010 12:01 AM

Hope all you Mcnabb haters are happy, cause this one is gunna bite us on the ass. I just hope Kolb is the real deal otherwise we just traded from an 11-5 to a 5-11 season. Thank God all this Oakland talk is over. It would have been a big mistake bringing him to Oakland and now that can be put to bed.
Oakland is a young team and needs to find a long term solution. At 34 this year and not being able to make it through a full season in years he would have been a waste.

  72. Football Expert says: Apr 5, 2010 5:43 AM

This should be ok unless Donavan needs to play an overtime game. Now that the play-off OT rule has changed it will confuse him even more. However; he will be confused sitting on his couch because the Skins will not make the play-off’s.
Donavan is injury prone – by week 8 you will be able to stick a fork in him.
Wasted money; wasted excitment for the Redskin fans.

Tough to figure this one out until the end of the season. I can’t believe philly was that desperate to trade him that they sent him to a division rival for a 2nd round pick and a couple of picks next year? However when you consider the team they traded him too is the most inept front office in football then you start to wonder that maybe Philly is on to something. Yes, shanny and allen are considered no different than the other fools danny hired until the product on the field improves! In any case #5 got a raw deal from the fans of philly and my guess is the situation in DC doesn’t get much better for him. He’ll probably long for his days of getting booed after throwing at his receivers feet 10 times in a row.
Please bring TO to the skins so the circus can officially return to town for another repeat performance. For moment there you almost sensed danny wasn’t running the team.
Lastly the The only #5 going anywhere this year is Flacco along with his new qb coach Zorn!

Is there any doubt the Rams are going to Bradford now? I think its hard to believe the Skins wouldnt have traded a nice package of pics to St Louis for Bradford’s rights. McNabb is going to want a long term deal to be done asap. What does this say about Jimmy Clausen as well. Is there another Aaron Rogers/Brady Quinn slide coming on April 22nd? I seriously doubt the Hawks, Browns, Jags, etc would consider Clausen now.
