Jason Spitz signs tender with Packers

Jason Spitz is ready to return to the Green Bay Packers.

Greg A. Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Spitz, a restricted free agent who can play both guard and center, signed his tender today and will begin workouts with the team on Tuesday.

Spitz was tendered at the second-round level, and his tender gives him a salary of $1.176 million in 2010.

After starting 41 games in his first three seasons with the Packers from 2006 to 2008, Spitz had a disappointing season and was limited by injury to just five games in 2009. But Spitz has made a complete recovery from back surgery and will be able to participate in all the offseason workouts.

Spitz is expected to compete for a starting spot at left guard.

    Is it Spitz or Swallows?

  2. Bob Nelson says: Apr 5, 2010 7:02 PM

He is a good utility lineman. By signing his tender and participating he should move ahead on the depth chart of a certain Union supporting guy who will hold out until the last day to sign the tender.
Now that the Packer line is healthy drafting an O-lineman is not a priority. They are stocked and playoff ready.
This should be a very good season for the Packers.

Pervy, When did you fight in the WEC & what weight classs was it? If you can’t answer those 2 questions then you have proven to be nothing other than a liar & coward. Man up, trick, & prove yourself to be an honest man.

I keep reading this story over – trying to figure out what the hell it is doing on the “McNabb Football Talk” website?
Is Spitz one of McNabb’s friends or something? Was he hoping to get traded to the Redskins to play with McNabb? Is he (like Florio) an infamous McNabb stalker??
Come on – give us a clue here.

  7. jimmySee says: Apr 5, 2010 7:42 PM

I hope this is an accurate report and Spitz has fully recovered. Back surgery is tricky. Justin Harrell has never really been able to recover. No one deserves those kinds of physical problems.

Way to make sure we keep last year’s 50-sack line together so they can make another run. Steady Teddy. The ship is sinking fast, but he’s too arrogant to do anything but hold it steady anyhow…

  9. bluestree says: Apr 5, 2010 8:50 PM

Looks like maybe he should have been competing with Colledge all along, once Sitton established himself at right guard. Colledge was drafted with an eye toward left tackle. He may end up there. As a backup.

Clearly another idiotic “football” fan. Take a look at the stats when a the O-Line didn’t include Barbre at RT and Lang/Colledge at LT. Idiot.
Think it’s a coincidence that the packers went 7-1 since the return of Mark Tauscher on the right side?
If TT kept last years 50-sack line together the line would look something like this

Didn’t this revamped line give up 5 sacks to the Cards in the playoffs?
Didn’t this revamped line not protect Rodgers when he had his “punt” blocked to lead to the Cards game winning TD?

But I’m sure if Thompson had let Spitz go elsewhere you would’ve railed on him even harder.
Face it, you have a personal thing. You actually said at the end of last season that if the Packers made a playoff run you’d admit you were wrong about Thompson, or something to that effect. The fact that they didn’t make a playoff run apparently means he’s terrible. There’s no middle ground, is there? If they had won the Super Bowl you’d admit Thompson knows what he’s doing. Not really. If he had let Spitz go, I wouldn’t have been surprised. Spitz and Moll were always terrible anyhow. What he SHOULD have done is sign or trade for a proven lineman. That would have shown me something. We all know how Ted feels about signing FA’s though.
Personal? Hardly. I get upset watching my favorite team get destroyed, but that’s about all. I said last season if we had won ONE playoff game, I would get off of Ted’s case. I didn’t feel that was unreasonable. Wolf won it all in his fifth year, as every great GM should be able to do, but all I asked of Ted was one lousy postseason victory.
As we know, and as usual, Ted failed to deliver. It’s almost as if I can’t set low ENOUGH expectations for him. Chicken is right, it is a lot harder schedule this year. I hope we somehow succeed, but I have to be realistic about our chances and Ted’s track record. You should do the same, it makes life much easier.

    Beer/majik,
Clifton and Tauscher were free agents. He cant complete the pass to Jennings himself from his booth that would have eliminated your distain of The Steady One. the Steady One oversees the operation. He doesn’t coach, call plays, block, pass etc. If 12 hits 85 in OT then you would be off his case you say??? one play would have made the difference? Set your expectations high Beer/Majik. They have. If you think you can do a better job and do not have trust in the Steady One then I offer you this….

Where exactly do you draw the line, BCS? I think they’re fairly stocked at the offensive skill positions. He needs to address the O-line. There’s no question about that. Otherwise, it’s a very talented offense and Thompson is responsible for signing/drafting all of them except Driver.
On defense, he hired a defensive coordinator that took them from the 20th ranked defense to the 2nd ranked defense. That’s a good hire. He drafted a playmaker in Matthews. Too soon to tell on Raji. He needs to address aging corners and make sure he has an adequate backup for Jolly. God only knows how that guy’s court case will go. But we’ve seen significant improvement from ’08 to ’09 on the defensive side, and you have to start with Thompson because of the Capers hire and switch to 3-4.
On special teams, he needs to address the punter. It’s been bad. Crosby’s up and down. If he completes 75% of his FGs again in ’10, I hope they look at other options.
But how, exactly, do you tie the results of individual games back to the GM? I don’t get it. The defense utterly failed to contain the Cardinals in that playoff game. And they failed to contain good passing offenses all season. But overall they were much improved. Do you expect Ted to suit up and cover Larry Fitzgerald? Is he personally responsible for McCarthy getting outcoached in a playoff game? Is he responsible if his NFL defensive MVP gets pushed down on two Cardinals TDs?
You can’t blame Thompson for one game or another. You can blame him for the overall talent level, but I don’t think that was their problem in the Arizona game. Playcalling and execution on the defensive side were the primary problem, were they not? But yet, that’s why you’re railing on Thompson. Because they didn’t win that one game.
I understand your frustration, and as you know I’m not about to say Thompson makes all the right decisions. But at least use some logic instead of blind hatred. Pinning the Packers’ playoff loss on Ted Thompson is misguided at best.

  32. TheBaySay says: Apr 6, 2010 3:58 PM

BCS, to most of us it seems that Thompson is doing quite a bit more than holding the ship steady. His predecessor was a nice guy and a pretty good coach but a disaster as a GM. Thompson has added Rodgers, Jennings, Finley, Matthews, Collins, Pickett, Woodson, Grant, Sitton, Nelson, and others who form much of the core of the team. They’ve been in the playoffs two of the last three years. Sorry, I can’t see that as “the ship is sinking fast.” I know some people will never forgive TT and MM for not signing away the franchise to good ol’ Bert, but most of us focus on the team, and root for the team. I hope you can let go of your near-pathological hatred of Thompson one of these days. In the meantime, at least you can’t be accused of being a fair weather fan; you’re not even happy when things are improving. Have a nice day.

When I see some improvement, I will be happy. However, I don’t see any. You say Sherman was a lousy GM, and you are correct. However, his record is still better than Ted’s, and as you seem to regret, those were Sherman’s draft picks that Ted “brilliantly” re-signed that saved our season (and likely Rodgers’ life).
Sherman was terrible, but it took Ted five years to get the team back to where Sherman had it: one and done in the playoffs. If you are all happy with that (as you seem to be) then why didn’t we just keep Sherman? Or, better still, there is another former coach out there whose teams have had the exact same number of playoff wins as Ted does. His name is Jerry Glanville. I don’t want him, and you shouldn’t either. So why are you happy with Ted?
Right or wrong, there is only one measure for a successful GM in this league. Ted has failed miserably to meet that standard. Tell me, what then HAS he done to make you all like him so much?

You won’t do that, because you think if you keep at it long enough, I’ll move on.
I laugh long and hard at people like you, it makes my work day go faster.
I think it’s hilarious that you think if you call me sad, pathetic and stupid, that it bothers me.
I don’t know you, I don’t care what you think.
But, you are playing right into my hands, what does that say about yourself?
    Think about it.
