Last week, Eagles fullback Leonard Weaver made it known that he opposed the idea of the team trading quarterback Donovan McNabb. Perhaps not coincidentally, Weaver wasn’t one of the players whose quotes following the move were published by the Eagles.
Three of the men who previously caught passes thrown by McNabb were among the players whose comments were distributed by McNabb’s former team. Not surprisingly, all three support the move.
Tight end Brent Celek said that the players “definitely” have confidence in Kevin Kolb. “We believe whoever our quarterback is that we can win the Super Bowl,” Celek said. “Kevin is the quarterback and we are going to support him 100 percent. We definitely have faith in Kevin. . . . We all believe that he can lead us to the promised land.”
Celek also added that he thinks Kolb eventually will be the best quarterback in the NFL.
Receiver Jeremy Maclin said that “Kolb is definitely the type of guy who can take us to where we need to be,” and that “Kolb can be that good.”
Wideout DeSean Jackson agrees. “My word for him is ‘potential.’ It’s really hard to [predict what he can do], but as far as what I know he’s capable of doing, he’s capable of doing some great things. What I was able to see him do in college, he’s done some pretty good things. We’re just looking forward to a whole year under his belt. I’m going to do everything I can do to help him be the great quarterback that I think he can be.”
The fact that the Eagles have launched a full-blown youth movement wasn’t lost on Jackson, who has completed only two NFL seasons. “It just feels like some new energy is coming around and guys are pumped up,” Jackson said. “I just heard Maclin say that he’s ready to get the season started right now. We’re fired up and ready to go. We have a lot to prove and we feel like we’re a team that’s always been that close. We’re just ready to go take it all the way.”
We like the enthusiasm. Then again, it will be hard for Celek, Maclin, and Jackson to get open if they don’t remove their lips from Kevin Kolb’s ass.
