At three years and $16 million, Haynesworth contract is now very tradeable

With the Redskins paying defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth a $21 million bonus last week, we’re told that the practical length and value of his contract is three years, $16 million, with $9 million guaranteed.

As a league source opined, “Every team in the NFL would have interest in that.”

The question is whether and to what extent the Redskins would want reimbursement of the money paid last week.  And that question depends on whether the Redskins prefer cash or draft picks — and whether the teams that want him are willing to give up cash or draft picks.

In our view, coach Mike Shanahan likely would prefer to stockpile picks.

We’ve confirmed that the Redskins definitely attempted to trade Haynesworth before the $21 million payment came due.  Others have reported that the efforts continue, with the Titans and Rams the teams most frequently mentioned.  Now that the financial package has been reduced to a ridiculously affordable $16 million over three years, someone will bite if the price is right.

Fat Albert got paid and has no further incentive to play.
Would have to dangle a contract extension, unlikely at his age, and load it with incentives or rework current deal, still unlikely.

I say trade him for picks. If you can replenish some picks for this year or even next, then maybe Suh or McCoy are available at 4.

Houston needs him. NOW. Too bad that won’t happen.

If Florio’s Brylcreem stained calculator is correct, I wouldn’t mind seeing Haynesworth in Black and Gold next year…Williams would wreak havoc with Ellis and Haynesworth on the line.

Now lets see how long it takes to get Buttersworth out of D.C, being a diehard Skins fan this was one of our worst moves since Mark Carrier, Deion Sanders, Jeff George and everybody else from the early years of Snyder. Lets hope Detroit or Jacksonville or hell even the Niners bites and offers us a couple of young players of NEED and either a 2nd or 3rd draft pick and a late round pick. Bring on Flozell to plat RT and RT only, also sumbody find Levi Jones and tell him take the 1 year offer play the same way he did last year and talk more money after this year. They both can compete for that starting RT spot the loser then becomes the LT/RT back up, along with Heyer and a rookie LT our O-Line will be at the worst serviceable.

I think they have a slim to none chance of trading him, and seeing as he’s probably the sensitive type, they should probably at least pay him lip service and deny trying to shop him. Also, they need to stop playing him at end and force him to play NT. You don’t get paid that much money for his 2009 stats.

I have all of the respect in the world for Shanahan but isn’t he the same guy who had horrible d-line after horrible d-line in Denver and now he is trying to get rid of Hayneworth. Well Shanny is nothing but consistent.

  21. yostros99 says: Apr 7, 2010 12:36 AM

Houston should trade Shaun Cody, Andre Davis, a 3rd rounder and condiotional pick next year (3rd-7throunder based on play)…

  23. JayMan says: Apr 7, 2010 1:15 AM

I love the idiots saying “grab him” for their 3-4 team. That’s why he wants out of DC! Seriously, the dude can at times be a top tier DT but he is simply not a nose tackle. He lacks the size among other things. He excels at beating the man in front of him, not taking on two oline-men.
So yeah… no cowboys or steelers comments please. 16 Mill for 3 years is about right for a top 10 4-3 DT. Personally, I think the dude is a turd but regardless… probably worth 16 Million over 3 in the right system. It’s actually a decent contract, with just a 3 year commitment.
Now the skins paying him that 21 million bonus?? Well that’s typical redskins management right there. He’s up there with Javon Walker as far as the worst per game investment in the front side of a FA contract.

It’s you’re worst move until you signed shanahan and he was bested by your 2 new dinosaur running backs and finally topped by mcnabb. A qb I’ve listens to skins fans blast for 11 years who I’m sure now we’ll be “amazing” in their eyes now. Every year they sign old stars or make the big trade and it NEVER works!

  38. 27Rice says: Apr 7, 2010 8:00 AM

Haynesworth would look real good next to Haloti Ngata.
Here ya g0 – Redskins need an OT. The Ravens are willing to trade LT Gaither. Hhhhmmmmmm…..I actually think there would have to be some give on the Skins part here.
Gaither for Haynesworth and a 4. If the Skins say no deal – ok too – the Skins keep Haynesworth (who they really don’t want) and the Ravens keep their starting LT. No biggy. Pressure is on DC.

  39. Get A Job says: Apr 7, 2010 8:08 AM

Haynesworth, Campbell, and Moss for Schaub and Andre Johnson. Do it.

  40. lurch's nyquil says: Apr 7, 2010 8:08 AM

At fat alberts news conference when he was first signed he was saying he wants to be the best, wants to make everyone better around him blah, blah, blah. I do not understand how he could accept that money and not friggin show up to meet his new coach for more than one day. Get rid of this guy. He is another over paid that only cares about his fat self. I have never seen a player get carted off the field and then go in the game on the next series. Albert you should be embarrassed.

  41. dabarber says: Apr 7, 2010 8:22 AM

    Ahahahahahhahahahhahaha.
Daniel Snyder will end up paying 32 million dollars for a 2nd or 3rd rd draft pick.
The WORST run organization in the NFL by far.

  42. Get A Job says: Apr 7, 2010 8:39 AM

    @dabarber:
As a fan, I’d be happy if our owner bought a 2nd or 3rd round pick straight cash with no cap consequences…
Also, you call it “the WORST run organization in the NFL by far” for essentially wasting money… however, it’s one of the most profitable organizations in the NFL. Your logic seems flawed.

  43. BroncoBourque says: Apr 7, 2010 8:43 AM

    @JayMan
Haynesworth doesn’t have the size to play NT??
The guy is 6’6 and over 350 lbs, that is more than enough size to play the nose, he just doesn’t have the will to do it. That is the real problem with him in DC, he has a terrible attitude and doesn’t want to play NT where he won’t put up big numbers.
His size is also ideal for a 5-technique 3-4 DE but again I don’t know that he has any will to play that position either. If he did commit to playing there he would be probably the best 5-technique in the league and could slid down to DT on passing downs.
With Haynesworth though it all comes down to his attitude, it always has and always will. That is why they will be lucky to get much for him, even with his contract being a lot more reasonable after the bonus was paid.

  44. smiley says: Apr 7, 2010 8:56 AM

No pressure on the Skins……so he plays for us this year. He played for us last year. No big deal. 1st & 3rd or a good LT and a 3rd…maybe a conditional 4th-5th next year. If not, he plays in D.C. this year. Hail!!

  50. dabarber says: Apr 7, 2010 11:12 AM

Why would you equate profitability with success? Who cares if they make money unless you are Daniel Snyder?
