Detroit judge: Charles Rogers owes Lions $6.1 million

The increasingly depressing story of former Lions receiver Charles Rogers just grew a little more depressing.  For him.

The Detroit Free Press reports that U.S. District Julian Cook ruled Rogers owed the Lions $6.1 million of a $9.1-million signing bonus because of his problems with substance abuse.

The Lions sued Rogers last year for failing to comply with a previous ruling.  Rogers was sentenced to 93 days in jail after violating his probation for a pair of alcohol-related events.

What does Matt Millen owe the team for being intoxicated while making draft picks?

  2. chipwade says: Apr 6, 2010 3:33 PM

How the hell would he pay that back???

  3. odds75to1 says: Apr 6, 2010 3:35 PM

Can we sue Millen next please…and include extra for damages!!

  4. GoCaps8 says: Apr 6, 2010 3:35 PM

It’s a shame. You hate to see someone with such a shot at greatness totally blow their chance. If he’d worked harder and stayed clean at Michigan State, he could have been something truly special.
A good reminder to teams who consider Dez Bryant this year.

How much do the Lions owe season ticket holders?

  8. severs28 says: Apr 6, 2010 3:38 PM

Considering he doesn’t have $61 left from his signing bonus I highly doubt the Lions get $6,100,000

  9. Captainkansas says: Apr 6, 2010 3:39 PM

Oh I’m sure they will get back every dime, all they have to do is wring it out of him.

  11. Leto_II says: Apr 6, 2010 3:41 PM

I’m sure Rogers has that 6.1 million lying around and he’ll make it a priority to send that back to the Lions promptly.

  12. adeem4578 says: Apr 6, 2010 3:41 PM

Damn shame.. Kid had a lot of talent… such a waste. And how exactly do they plan on collecting the money?? Dude is broke as hell by now.

  13. Chapnasty2 says: Apr 6, 2010 3:43 PM

I bet he can write them a check any time. What a waste of tax payer dollars there in good old Detroit.

  14. TryTheVeal says: Apr 6, 2010 3:43 PM

Are they going to garnish his wages?…….This could put a serious dent in his “would you like fries with that” annunal imcome………

odds are he spent the money on gold chains and paying producer/promoter fees to start a budding career in rap music.

  19. godofwine says: Apr 6, 2010 3:49 PM

I’m Charles Rogers. I had 66 catches and thirteen touchdowns. Remember that?

  20. Ace613 says: Apr 6, 2010 3:51 PM

Maybe he can borrow it from Barry Sanders….uh oh, didnt the Lions make Barry pay that back too? Oh well then

  21. MotorCityKitties says: Apr 6, 2010 3:53 PM

F him, that POS deserves to be dead broke for the rest of his life for blowing that oppourtunity.

  26. marcduke says: Apr 6, 2010 3:55 PM

    Dear Detroit Lions,
    Good Effin’ luck with that.
    Signed,
The #2 Pick in the 2003 Draft – thanks Matt Millen! – and possibly a current member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Charles Rogers.

  27. ArtModellsPimp says: Apr 6, 2010 3:56 PM

    He probably drank it all…

  28. BoltsFan says: Apr 6, 2010 3:57 PM

    chipwade,
What, he already blew 9 million bucks (on blow, a mansion, a Bentley, and some gold teeth?) Yeah, these guys “needs dat money for their famblys and their biatches.”

  29. Rick O'Shea says: Apr 6, 2010 3:58 PM

The sad thing is I don’t think Matt Millen was intoxicated… stupidity is just his natural state. Charles Rogers… well, as a former stoner myself, I know how hopeless life can get. Not excusing it, it’s an emotional addiction, at least is was for me. Hopefully, Charles can get his act together and get a job so he can at least pay back $6100 at a minimum

  30. mookieburns13 says: Apr 6, 2010 4:02 PM

It is pretty sad….his career was on the right path until week 5 of his rookie season……oh wait it’s not sad…he’s a dipshit loser….anyONE reading this article would kill to have the kind of talent he did….but he pissed it away….maybe they can throw that 6.1 mill at Pacman

  31. God's Own Silver and Blue says: Apr 6, 2010 4:05 PM

Rogers has this nailed, no sweat. In Michigan, every returned empty 40 ouncer and Wild Irish Rose is worth 10 cents a pop. With 600,000 empties returned (which would clean out his basement), that would cover 6 million of it right there. The rest he could scrounge from under his sofa.

  32. OC Dave says: Apr 6, 2010 4:11 PM

Just as the 8 years of the Bush administration was a disaster, 8 years of Millen was the same for the Lions. Hopefully we now have the right people in the right places to turn things around…….but it won’t happen overnight fixing their screw ups.

  33. TryTheVeal says: Apr 6, 2010 4:24 PM

Just another dumb hood rat, probably with neck tats, who pissed away a fortune and will be considered a legend in the ghetto, it doesn’t take much….i’m sure his baby mommas will try to cash in, but will be left with nothing, but at least he kept it real…….Right asswipes?……..you can’t define stupidity, but you also can’t ignore it when it’s right in your face……STUPID is as STUPID does…….Oh i’m sorry, he’s a grown man who never grew up……And pissed away a fortune……I truly feel bad for him…………NOT…..How soon til he signs with someone to write a book, that only the incarcerated will read?……

  34. JOldewurtel says: Apr 6, 2010 4:27 PM

And I remember when I thought this guy was WITHOUT A DOUBT the best player in college football when he was at Michigan State. I didn’t know anything about him except his on-field performance.
There is no way he is going to be able to pay that back… unless he starts getting royalties from being on every top 10 NFL bust list that’s ever made…
Speaking of the ‘list’… I think he falls in right at #2 behind Leaf.

  35. littlekaps says: Apr 6, 2010 4:29 PM

God’s Own Silver and Blue – ten cents into six million is 66,000,000, not 600,000…Each can is not worth 10 bucks. Dude, nice Detroit Public school education!

Yikes…another scathing indictment of the Michigan educational system. That many bottles is only 6 million pennies buddy, not dollars.

The Dagger in the heart is that the next pick after Rogers was Andre Johnson. Can you even imagine Andre next to CJ, you can’t triple team both of them.

Who cares? Wah he got paid and couldn’t handle his high. I know a 20 people like him and they never had more than $100 to their names. He should consider himself lucky.

  52. HarrisonHits says: Apr 6, 2010 6:49 PM

Well since he paid 50% taxes on the money to begin with he won’t even have that much left. Does the government have to reimburse the amount he paid in taxes on that money since this technically means he was never paid that 6.1 mil ?
Well maybe the Lions need someone to clean their toilets for life. That’s about the only way they’ll get anything of value out of him.

  53. jibfest says: Apr 6, 2010 6:50 PM

minimum wage/ $6.1 million = a lot of man hours.
