New Orleans media growing weary of Saints' arrogance

Today’s item from Rosenthal regarding Saints spokesman Greg Bensel’s frustrated response to media e-mail inquiries regarding the disappearance of 1,200 seats at the Superdome for 2010 is the latest example of some heavy-handed behavior by an organization led by a Bill Parcells protege who finally has the hardware to justify periodic boorish behavior.

Before the Saints won the first Super Bowl in franchise history, our pal Mike Freeman of CBS teed off on the Sean Payton regime, pointing out the coach who looks like Malcolm in the Middle has been acting a bit more like one of Malcolm’s older brothers.

Based on a review of the e-mails that Bigad Shaban of WWL-TV exchanged with Bensel, it appears that the organization wants the local media to behave like an extension of the P.R. department, trumpeting the positive news and overlooking anything that may cast the Saints in a negative light.

Said one member of the New Orleans media who asked to be kept anonymous for fear of retaliation from the team, “That story truly shows how the Saints treat the local media. . . .  If your name isn’t Costas, King, Glazer, or Werder, the team completely bullies and blows you off.”

The source also tells us that Shaban isn’t the only local reporter who has received borderline hostile e-mails from the team.

This attitude from the Saints toward the local media is unfortunate, and it’s wrong.  The Saints have benefited from an enormous amount of goodwill from people in New Orleans and throughout Louisiana.  It doesn’t mean that the organization has earned the privilege of never being called out or questioned by the folks who cover it.

In fact, the Saints should welcome the attention.  When the decisions and actions of a pro sports team isn’t being scrutinized, it’s only because the team has become irrelevant.

It’s great how “the media” loves to hold moral authority (right and wrong) over everyone but themselves.
Also, “people in New Orleans and throughout Louisiana” does not = “the local media”. If there were any true journalists in this country whose pens were guided by the greater good of humanity, I would agree with you. Instead it’s “whatever sells copy” or “gets us hits”. Lets stop trying to fool ourselves.
With all that in mind, I now return your soapbox.

Sean Payton gets credit for comments made by the team spokesman. A couple more rings and a cutoff hoodie and he’ll be the new Belichik.

  18. stetai says: Apr 6, 2010 2:05 PM

Not surprising. While the national media has characterized the Saints as sympathetic heroes, none of their actual actions have backed that up.
From their sleazy style of defensive play to their onfield (and now off-field) attitude and arrogance (near everyone but Brees) indicates they are a group of punks.
What they really need to realize is the nation’s “infatuation” with the Saints, which somehow allows the rest of the country to “move on” from Katrian, will wear out in the next 6-9 months, and things will revert back to normal where no one cares about the Saints outside of LA and the Gulf Coast. And this same local media which they are spurning will be all they have.
    Typical Saints behavior.

As I read Bigad Shaban’s emails to Bensel – I kept thinking what an annoying little twit he is. WWL- TV (and Radio) is known to many for it’s own arrogance and utterly obscene treament of viewer/listeners

  23. SF Saints Fan says: Apr 6, 2010 2:12 PM

    Florio,
You are really reaching here. I read through the e-mails and there is nothing there. The media guy was trying to contact the wrong person. The saints have been very upfront with the fans who have been impacted by the ongoing renovations and improvements of the dome. This “broke” over two weeks ago and has been expected for a couple of years. As far as I know, the fans who “lost” their seats this year will be first in line when newer and better seats are added in the next year or two.
It really sucks for the fans who lost their seats this year, and I believe most, if not all, will be relocated on a temporary basis, but lay off the whole heavy handed reach here.
We know, you hate the Saints.
    Get over it.
The Saints won the Super Bowl. They are not evil, they just beat your favorite team and a QB you used to make fun of at every turn but now just worship.

  24. Buckyball says: Apr 6, 2010 2:13 PM

Whats really sad about all this is that the reporters are merely trying to point out the Saints are tyring to hide the fact that this about $$$.
They need to tear up 1200 cheap seats to build a new, big press box (where they can sell prime locations to the highest bidder). Fine. But instead of putting at least some of the cheap seats back where the old press box was, that is being converted to luxury box.
In the end, the Saints make much more income in the new configuration. They already increased the price of the “cheap seats” by 40%. Now they’re converting 1200 of the cheaps seats indirecty into (admittedly fewer) luxury seats that sell for $1450 more per seat than the seats that were lost.

  25. Shank says: Apr 6, 2010 2:14 PM

As a New Orleans resident and former season ticket holder, I agree with the team on this one. The media is hyping this thing up and there really isn’t a reason to do so. The ONLY reason it’s a huge issue is b/c (1) the saints won a super bowl; (2) subsequent to the super bowl run people are losing their seats. Otherwise, it’d be swept under the rug; we knew that these renovations were coming for years.
When I read the email transcripts, I got annoyed with the local media too. Considering all the negativity captured and portrayed by the local media, there’s enough corruption, murder and bs in New Orleans that this doesn’t have to be a focal point. If anything, the Saints’ reaction has made this situation a mountain rather than a mole hill.

  26. Deeznutz says: Apr 6, 2010 2:15 PM

Well the Saints have truly arrived! Let the mindless backlash begin!

  28. Ilovefoolsball says: Apr 6, 2010 2:16 PM

cmoney get over yourself. The vikings/colts/cardinals/falcons/ravens/eagles/bucs/panthers/dolphins didn’t win the superbowl. I mean what does that really say about your team if a “fag” coach won the superbowl and your team couldn’t even get there? I guess your coach is a bigger “fag”.
The reason the Saints feel this way is because New Orleans is the most educated pro football city when it comes to football. I know Green Bay, Philly and the like have rabid fanbases but since New Orleans is the only pro football team in the deep south they have the same type of passion that is exhibited at Bama, LSU & Georgia college football programs. This means they know every little thing that goes on and question it. The fans many times know a lot more than the coaches care to give them credit for. So when the fans catch wind of issues from the local media there is a lot more backlash and attention paid to such issues as opposed to when stuff happens say in…Washington.

They’re not being arrogant, just moving on with plans that have been in the works.

  40. joelvis72 says: Apr 6, 2010 2:34 PM

I sense two camps here: one who chides the Saints for their arrogance, tells them to enjoy this Super Bowl because they’ll never win another one, they’re getting too big for their britches, etc.
Two, the fanbase (most of which can’t afford season tickets btw) who have eaten every kind of crap from the rest of the league, Tom Benson, the team itself, the City of New Orleans, the State of Louisiana, fans of other teams (except Falcons fans; as much as the teams hate each other, I’ve never had anything but good times with them), and the rest who like to tear down a winner, no matter who the team is. We are enjoying, and will continue to enjoy, this championship because they damn well may never win another one. But we’ve got this one, after an especially hard post-hurricane period, and by beating a pretty good team, and damned if we aren’t going to live it up until the start of next season.
I fall into the second camp, and I don’t think it’s too much to ask to let us have our few months of glory before training camp starts. Local media types are always sucking at the teat of their local teams anyway, screw them.

Unless it is the Vikqueens or Eagles, you put a negative twist on it. Does everyone not know that the NFL is a business? It does suck that the fans lost there seats, but they will be taken care of. If you idiots pulled for a team that was worth a dookie, you might be running into these problems with your stadiums. Except Vike’s fans, you won’t have to complain and worry anymore because Wilf is moving that pocketbook tick of a team out west to a real stadium that people want to go to.

Funny thing is that the fans that were slighted should actually be crying to SMG because they are the ones responsible for the Dome and it’s upkeep, including the renovations that are being performed, that were proposed by the state (which owns the Superdome) and agreed to as part of the lease agreement between the Saints and the State. The Sections and rows being affected were some of the cheapest seats in the house. I’ve been to games, seated in some of the affected sections, and aside from actually getting to say that you were in the Dome, you would have a much more comfortable experience from home….the rows mentioned are what we refer to as the “nose-bleed” sections in which you feel as if you’re scaling a 60-degree incline as you traverse up the stairs to said seating. The slighted fans will get first shot at any available seats created or vacated by previous ticket-owners, but will cost substantially more that what they were previously paying. I’m pretty sure that this is a P.R. move against the Saints in order to get something for nothing. It’s much ado about nothing. When the Saints agreed to the lease agreement w/ the state there was an outline for the renovations that detailed the creation/removal/relocation of seats/suites/pressboxes that is to take place over three years….why these people are “suprised” including the media which reported these upcoming changes a couple of years ago is beyond me. As posted earlier, just another attempt by D-bag media types to create a story where there is none. We’ll see how big of “fans” they are when they’re asked to pony up $1000-$1500 per season ticket for better seats when they were only paying $500 for the crappiest ones in the house. Supply and demand, if they aren’t willing to pay, there is a waiting list of 50,000+ that might be. Excellent reporting Florio, this is Pulitzer material….keep up the good work douche.

I’m not a Saints fan so I can’t say one way or the other about how the team has been acting.
That being said, if the media has a problem with the way they are being treated by the organization, I say tough shit. I’d say 99% of the media is out to twist stories and throw people under the bus to sell newspapers. That’s why half the population doesn’t even believe most of the crap the media spews out on a daily basis. Starting from the bottom feeding tabloids all the way up to the major news stations who spin political issues in favor of whoever provides the most funding.
If I were the head of P.R. for any NFL team, I would stonewall the shit out of the media. I would choose one or two reporters that I trust enough to deliver a story without a biased spin and use them exclusively.

Like Clint Eastwood said to Little Bill in ‘Unforgiven’, “Deserves got nothin’ to do with it.” What did suffering a natural disaster have to do with a Superbowl? The Saints and Payton have been acting like dicks since their win. Are they still partying and celebrating? Get over yourselves, you did what you were paid to do; win games. I’m happy for the fans, not for the team.
Did Minnesota deserve a Superbowl because we had a bridge collapse and 13 people died? No. Shit happens and I sympathize with all victims of all disasters.

    (a) The Vikings fans and Favre lovers are a bunch of whiny losers and
    (b) The Saints defense is not actually dirty.
    2) Please give me examples of the “punkish” behavior by Saints players. Bobby McCray’s DUI is the only negative thing I can think of that happened with a player this past season. They all behaved themselves, and are generally very classy guys, one of the classiest groups in the entire NFL. Even Jeremy Shockey was tight-lipped this year. You cannot tell me this team is full of jerks. It is a group of great guys.

New Orleans Media? They should be ashamed. They are the most guilty of jumping on the band wagon. No one locally gave the Saints a chance in the playoffs. After the last three games of the season they ALL thought we were one and done. Historically they NEVER gave the Saints a chance. Even Jim Henderson (of hell has frozen over fame) “Reluctanly” picked the Saints to beat the Cardinals. Our local paper is chocked full of AP stories. They did not print enough papers after the Vikings win and were unable to supply demand. As a former TP employee, when a food critic quit they replaced her with a sports writer. The New Orleans media hates the Saints and they hate Benson. I do not fault the Saints a bit for giving the New Orleans the DISS they SO deserve…

Ummmmm….in case you guys haven’t had a chance to read the little writing at the bottom of the trophy, it says “Super Bowl XLIV” which means there have been 43 other teams that have won it before you.
And they’ve managed to act like champions with class and dignity.
There may have been 43 other groups of players that won it but there are not 43 other teams
First there are only 32 teams in the NFL and many of those teams like the EGals have never won it
Then there are the great teams that have won it 3 or more times
    Hence your statement is false

ha. saints win the superbowl and reporters have a problem with the coaches and spokesman?

  69. CaptainMarvel says: Apr 6, 2010 3:58 PM

They shouldn’t be arrogant; they should be grateful for the officiating they got in the NFCC game, especially OT.

  70. GoBrowns19 says: Apr 6, 2010 4:02 PM

I almost have to stick up for the Saints on this. If I saved 20 dying schoolchildren from a burning bus…you can bet that I’d be a hero for three days, but hated after that for smoking pot or being an overall dickhead. Media sucks.

  71. Brewster says: Apr 6, 2010 4:05 PM

Based on a review of the e-mails that Bigad Shaban of WWL-TV exchanged with Bensel, it appears that the organization wants the local media to behave like an extension of the P.R. department, trumpeting the positive news and overlooking anything that may cast the Saints in a negative light.

And this is news for a NFL team?
The Broncos have been doing this to the local beat writers that cover the team for some time now. The three primary writers who cover the Broncos (Klis, Kiszla & Jones) for the Denver Post do exactly that, act as a PR extension of the team.
Just ask Brandon Marshall, Jay Cutler, Tony Sheffler and a few other players and Coaches.
Just the opposite of what happens with local media coverage in places like Philly, Washington & New York where the coverage is critical and more balanced.

  72. teeg01 says: Apr 6, 2010 4:06 PM

Media, take note. No one minds a negative article once in a while, but there is too many negative stories out there.
I was absolutely appalled that the media brought up the “NFL potential draft pick Tony Washington is a sex offender for sleeping with his 15 yr old sister”. Please explain to me a) why the public needs to know this, and b) what this has to do with football.
Where is the class and ethics in media? Where is the line between reporting the news and ruining someone’s reputation for a buck?

Hey ass, learn to READ. I didn’t say 43 other “franchises” I explicitly said “teams” for a reason. Every year a team of players, coaches, and executives reach the ultimate goal in the NFL. I don’t single out franchises, in that just because you are playing for a franchise that won one or more Super Bowls doesn’t give you bragging rights unless you were on a winning team. If you (the player, coach, executive) of one of the 43 teams that one, then you have something to talk about (but still with a modicum of class).
    P.S., Again: you’re an ass.

Umm….I know I’m repeating what a few others who know what they’re talking about on here have already stated, but these rennovations to the Superdome have been planned for quite a while now. The organization DID NOT make this decision only after they won the Super Bowl as many of you think before you read. This was all part of a long term plan to increase revenue from the existing structure instead of building an entirely new stadium. It’s a small market and they have to do everything they can to remain competitive. And, the Superdome pressbox is in an unusual spot to begin with by other stadium standards. Compared to the season ticket prices of other teams and that we don’t have PSLs, the Saints aren’t squeezing the ticket holders nearly as much as they could, especially considering the demand right now.
God. Win one Superbowl and the hate comes out of the woodwork.

  83. wvugrad00 says: Apr 6, 2010 6:07 PM

Dig around and see if you can find out how they treat the officers in other states that provide escorts from the airport to their hotel.
I know when they were in DC this past season, they treated the police terribly. The Saints don’t have any friends in that department any more.

  84. Pervy Harvin says: Apr 6, 2010 7:39 PM

Any trolls that posted negative comments about the Saints who are fans of this illustrious list can suck it:
MINNESOTA VIKINGS, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, PHILADELPHIA EAGLES, San Diego Chargers, ATLANTA FALCONS, Tennessee Titans, Carolina Panthers, Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars.
Come back when you win a Super Bowl.

  86. BigEasy says: Apr 6, 2010 8:39 PM

  87. Saintsjunkie says: Apr 6, 2010 9:06 PM

Some reporters are just negative, just like some fans, and I can understand why they want to be selective, I would do the same thing. Even winning the superbowl , all some of the media wants to do is write about the last three games or something negative. why not write about the players stories, the fans, the city, the region or the other many endless positive stories. But just look at some of these comments , many are just negative, with no knowledge of the facts, most just hate the superbowl champs.
    REPEAT: you know it’s coming!

  88. realheavyd says: Apr 6, 2010 11:07 PM

This is yet another bullshit “news” article from a bullshit sports reporting site run by a bullshit glorified bastard of a reporter.
Just because the Saints aren’t making any news so far this off-season beyond losing Scott Fujita and Mike Bell to free agency because they didn’t want to overpay for those guys’ less than overwhelmingly stellar services (Fujita was decent but he isn’t exactly a star OLB in this league — Bell had a nice year for the Saints but they set his salary just where it should have been set and stuck to their guns by not countering an over-inflated offer from the Eagles) and shedding the under-performing and over-paid Charles Grant (Grant has never lived up anywhere even near the same zip code of the salary that the Saints were overpaying him), I guess the media has decided to make up stories like this one to try and get their readership up during slow times.
Are you really paraphrasing “one member of the New Orleans media” who prefers to remain nameless? My ass! You just made this shit up, didn’t you? Admit it!
I love my Saints and I will just sit here patiently while awaiting any real news about my team instead of believing any of the dribble that comes from the desk (or the offices) of that Mike Florio idiot an his cronies!
RHD was here, but only because this article popped up in my Google search for “Saints news” by apparent mistake…

  89. realheavyd says: Apr 6, 2010 11:25 PM

There is only one person in the New Orleans media who would ever speak out like this against the Saints’ organization anyway.
I won’t name any names, but his name it sounds something like “Brian Allee-Walsh”.

That wouldn’t work in new orleans. We have Coaches and players on Facebook and Twitter that all they have to do is say we are doing this, we’re going to be here, and we need your support the TRUE FANS here would show up and support the team. What other Super Bowl champion held a parade that attracted 1 million+ people?
Get your heads out of your asses, stop hating on the Saints, and go on being the lousy fans of whatever team you come from…

Name 3 ways the Saints have een acting like dicks since the superowl? Because we had a parade? Because we were proud of our team for winning their 1st ever super bowl? For our front office not being able to make any moves in the offseason because of no agreement? For us remodeling our stadium which we’ve been doing SINCE Katrina to replace stuff and make it better? Really? That’s how we’re being dicks?
Only thing you are correct on is DESERVING HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT! WE EARNED IT DAMMIT! So get the ****…

This arrogance reminds me of George Bush, who tried to destroy New Orleans because they didn’t vote for him. By winning the Super Bowl, the Saints stuck it to the criminals Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, and Palin. The New Orleans media isn’t the propaganda machine that Fox News is for the Republican tea-bagging racist Republicans.

What does extreme left-wing hatred of the majority of America (conservatism) have anything at all to do with the New Orleans Saints, or anything else of any real importance in this country for that matter?
You need to just shut up! If we can ever find a way to have Obama impeached before his term expires, it won’t be soon enough for me or the majority of America!
