More than a month after the alleged incident, police in Milledgeville, Georgia have completed their investigation.
According to the Associated Press, the case has been referred to District Attorney Fred Bright. Bright will eventually decide based on the investigation whether to present the matter to a grand jury.
But while it’s widely believed that a grand jury can be persuaded to indict a ham sandwich, the question that Bright needs to ask himself is whether he thinks he can get a conviction -- and whether he has the desire to face a Dream Team-style defense effort led by attorney Ed Garland.
An indictment of Roethlisberger, even if not followed by a conviction, will likely wreak havoc on his pro football career. He could be suspended indefinitely pending resolution of the case, just as Mike Vick was suspended indefinitely upon indictment in 2007.
