Donovan McNabb says he would have played for the Raiders

A week ago, the Raiders reportedly were the frontrunners to land quarterback Donovan McNabb.  After he unexpectedly landed in Washington, reports emerged (both from Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports and Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer) that McNabb made it clear that he didn’t want to go to Oakland.  Cole reported that McNabb threatened to retire.

Not so, McNabb now says.

Asked by Ryen Rusillo on ESPN Radio’s The Scott VanPelt Show what McNabb would have done if shipped to the East side of the Bay, the eleven-year veteran had this to say, per Jerry McDonald of  “I would have been at the workouts and working out with the team,
throwing and trying to get the timing down with the corps of receivers
and running backs they have and communicated with the offensive line to
get ready for minicamp.”

McNabb then laughed about his threat to retire if traded to the Raiders.

“This is the problem with some of these so-called key analysts and these
smart guys out there who go by ‘sources,'” McNabb said.  “So many people listen to
different sources ‘close to’ the individual, but never the individual,
saying that I would have not showed up in Oakland, I would have been

But, you see, McNabb’s explanation confirms the value of leaks from sources “close to” the subject of the news.  Sources “close to” McNabb can get a certain message out to the media, and McNabb then retains plausible deniability, since he was never the source.

Besides, with McNabb saying nothing, those “key analysts and smart guys” had to look somewhere for information.  But McNabb is basically saying that Cole and McLane flat-out made up their stories.

McNabb knows how to work the media — one of the things he has most in common with his former head coach in Philly.  Regardless of whether McNabb never would have gone to Oakland, he never will admit it now.  Really, what does he have to gain from that approach?  There could be a day when he wants to continue to play pro football and no one but the Raiders wants him.  Thus, there’s no reason to engage in a public bridge burning.

We’re not saying we don’t believe McNabb.  We’re only saying that we don’t expect him to say anything other than what he said, regardless of whether he had no real desire to play for the Raiders — or whether he was simply hoping to steer the trade toward a team like the Redskins.

Gonna be a long season for Skins fans if ANYTHING goes wrong, or if he is questioned or held accountable for anything.

  13. Junior says: Apr 8, 2010 9:25 PM

A few ways to look at this:
    1. McNabb is telling the truth. And really, unless you know him personally, there is no reason not to believe him.
    2. He’s lying to as Florio puts it, not burn any bridges. He didn’t want to go to Oakland.
    3. He or his agent were the source, trying to gain leverage and the Raiders didn’t have as much interest as stated.
There are other possibilites too, but either way, cue the haters who will say, “of course he will say that now…” Like any of you know what McNabb thinks or feels. Anyone who claims they do needs to back off the pipe… and stop smoking pot too.

  15. oh the usual says: Apr 8, 2010 9:27 PM

    two things about this story:
    1) a writer could you know…not write a story when they do not have reliable information, unless they want to flat out say that their information is not reliable. saying that the player is lying here to save his own ass when the information was all hearsay anyway is kind of irresponsible.
    2) what is mcnabb supposed to say here? if he says he prefers any team, then it will be twisted that he does not want to go to the other teams. if he says he does not like a team, then he is a diva. we always want the athletes to quietly go about their business until it meets our agenda. then, if we want to hear from them, they are manipulaters when they do that. the double standard that athletes are held to is flat out wrong.
i usually take up for the writers…but to blame mcnabb for getting a story about him wrong, when he blatantly says he never aimed to do what the media says he aimed to do is nothing but trying to save face. give it up.

    Give it up Gloryhole!
We tell you all the time your sources are BS!!!
All this site does is post RUMORS! Couldas, wouldas, and shouldas.
Playing for the Redskins is a better situation than playing for the Raiders? NOT! Jason Campbell is/was a better QB than Russell. QB was not the problem in DC. QB was the problem in Oakland. Campbell was getting crushed weekly. McNabb is gonna change that? NO WAY! He would have been better off in Oakland, better supporting cast and weaker division.
The skins with Mcnabb and Shannahan are NOTHING in that division but LAST PLACE!
I must say your envy of the Raiders is nice to see on a daily basis Gloryhole. But you and your “sources” are always way off!

Once again, your overall hate for the Raiders makes you and your colleagues look like complete jack asses. Why not for once just admit you were dead wrong. What NFL player would walk away from 11mil at his age? I understand that the Raiders are your meal ticket Florio. Their posts generate the most feedback out of any Team in the NFL on this site. But come on, their making you look bad this year. I have not seen 1 accurate report come out of PFT about the Raiders this off-season.

  21. chadgoy says: Apr 8, 2010 9:38 PM

Okay Florio, I don’t get it. You repeat a story some other writer reports, from sources other than McNabb. Then, once again, when “McNabb” clears up the air and states from his own mouth that he would have played for the Raiders, all you have to say is that he’s a liar, just working the press, and that you trust your sources…??? What kind of news reporting is this? I know it’s a rumor mill, really, but when your rumor gets busted by the person themself, all you have to say is “he’s a liar.” Wow, no wonder all you’re in charge of is rumors, instead of factual reporting. Of course McNabb wasn’t saying anything, because there wasn’t anything to say. Keep grasping those straws Florio, keep grasping.

  22. Jethro Marx says: Apr 8, 2010 9:39 PM

One thing I agree with is, he’s absolutely correct about your ilk, Florio. Your profession uses phrases like “a source close to ____ tells me that” or “I’m hearing rumblings” that so and so is dissatisfied with his contract, or so and so wants a trade, or so and so wants to trade for McNabb. You know where I believe those rumblings come from (mostly)? Your asses.

Last, as a Raider fan I wish McNabb well with his new team. But I am not sitting up nights that he is not a Raider. I was sitting up nights in prayer when he was in play praying the Raiders interest was false. He was not going to help the Raiders in the long hall and they need to find a young QB to lead the team forward.

McNabb really screwed up with the Oliver thing back in the day. Apparently everyone except him seemed to know that she just parroted whatever her interviewee said. He was thinking he could gauge the reaction he might get from a “trade me or extend my contract” ploy not reazlizing she would say he was the one that said it.
Between mama Wilma, papa Sam, and brother Sean and “unauthorized” entries on Yardbarker he manages to say whatever he wants to and then claim he had nothing to do with it. It’s been like that since the 2003 thumb injury / Rush Limbaugh thing.

Do you even see how stupid your tautological reasoning is on this?
You are basically saying “of course he is saying he would have played for the Raiders even though he didn’t want to, just in case later on he has to.”
Do you even read what you write? Is it that hard for you to take a man at his word? Must you try to spin the story as if the subject of the story is not an adult that can think and speak for himself?
Why are you such a Raider hater? Did a Raider fan take your lunch money as a kid or something? Or is it simply because nearly every story you write about the Raiders ends up being wrong?

How would it be a bigger deal if he went to the Raiders over the Redskins. You seem to forget, he didn’t “pick” the Redskins. The Redskins picked him by offering the best deal on the table. Of course the situation is ideal for McNabb, because he probably doesn’t have to move his family, depending on where they live. It’s laughable to say it would have been a “big deal”, as the Redskins are no better than the Raiders right now. Your team isn’t all that special to make such a claim.
Then you still want to believe that Seymor didn’t want to play for the Raiders, despite the words that came out of the mans mouth. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t have signed a new contract with the team. People like you are a joke. You believe what you want to believe, and refuse to believe what the actual players say, because it doesn’t fit your agenda.
Same goes to Florio and the other hacks that kept dragging the Raiders through the mud for absolutely no reason. Now that the truth is out, and your back peddling, still trying to claim you were right all along. In the end, all of you the hack reporters and haters were proven wrong. Take it like a man and just admit it instead of trying to make excuses.
McNabb said he would have played for the Raiders. It’s just that simple. There no underlying reason, as he’s a Redskin now and has no reason to do any damage control. If he really didn’t want to, he would say it. Get a grip people.

Think about it – If the Raiders were really offering up there 2 round pick why would the Eagles trade in there division to move up only a few spots. They were never really pushing for him. This was just a very bad trade by the Eagles and they know it. That is why they are trying to push this lame a$$ story know about them tading McNabb to bloke the Redskins from drafting a QB.

As usual Florio, you in bred retard, you missed the point of McNabb’s statement. He came right out and said that idiots like you who engage in rumors and listen to anyone other than the athletes themselves are salivating dogs waiting for someone to ring the bell. With any luck you’ve already been neutered and others learn from your ignorance and stupidity. Didn’t you used to work for the National Enquirer? Then they fired your sorry ass for giving them a picture of your mother that you were passing off as a picture of sasquatch?

I don’t belive McNabb for a second. It is easy to say that now but you know he was whining to the organization behind closed doors. McNabb will never get over his biggest problem on the field, he has no heart.

Only reason he went to the Redskins was because that was the team with the highest bidder(draft pick) otherwise he would be wearing the Silver & Black.
    Straight and Simple.
    Highest bidder.

I dont get how you come to these conclusions. Yes alot of people in the NFL say things in the media they are really doing something else. But some dont.
Give me 1 example when it has been proven that Mcnabb was lying in the media. He is always upfront thats why there was so many dramas surrounding. Mcnabb is alot of things but he isnt a liar. I always believe what he says and I will continue to do that until he gives me a reason not too.
Besides that anything Jason Cole says is an outright lie when it comes to the Eagles. There has been at least 3 different times that it has been proven that he was just making things up. That guy has no creditably and should take everything he says with a grain of salt.

So what I’am gathering is that it’s OK for guys like Favre to LIE about everything, but not Mcnabb?

I am confused, he is referring to the “source” , “da source”, Mike Lombardi’s unnamed soucre, the official “league source”, the source of the source, florios source, nancy gats source, tim kawakami’s source, Adam Schefters reliable source, or BSPN, or has plenty of “unamed sources” .
Well at least we know one thing, when it comes to the raiders, we know all of these sources all have one thing in common….they don’t know jack, except lies, and hate.
Gotta love the hate…believe it or not
