Report: Santonio could be eyeing a bigger market

NFL_holmes1.jpgAt a time when there’s a belief that receiver Santonio Holmes could be the fall guy for the recent string of alleged misbehavior in the ‘Burgh, there’s a report that Santonio may want to say “sayonara” to the Steel City.

Ken Laird of ESPN 1250 reports that Holmes doesn’t believe that the Steelers will pay him “what he believes he’s worth” on a new contract, and that Holmes would prefer to play in a big market in 2011.

The possible divorce between the Steelers and the MVP of Super Bowl XLIII could explain the team’s decision to bring receivers Dez Bryant and Golden Tate in for a pre-draft visit.  Both could be available when the Steelers exercise the 18th overall pick in the draft.

Yep…sounds right…the Looneys are looking to bring in Dez Bryant…he should fit right in.

  2. bomismorg says: Apr 8, 2010 3:57 PM

another ohio state idiot.he did nothing but get number 2 reciever numbers throughout his brief career and is only known for smoking pot, assaulting woman and tapping his toe in the super bowl.ohio state needs to add courses in their university to make respectible young men.

Gee, last time a big name #1 receiver left Pittsburgh for a big market…that turned out really well. Didn’t it Plaxico?

  4. sonic colonic says: Apr 8, 2010 3:58 PM

But remember, this is the same guy that reported that Bruce Arians was gonna be fired.

  5. SFrancis1680 says: Apr 8, 2010 3:58 PM

FLORIO, given the fact that there may be a LOCKOUT in 2011, & how a lot of players who thought they would be free agents, WERE NOT b/c they didn’t have enough service time, YOU are presuming to know a lot about who can and cannot be a free agent in 2011. Howard Eskin talks about bloggers “WHO MAKE THINGS UP” & just b/c he has you on his radio show, doesn’t mean that you aren’t the village idiot.

This is really looking into the future as there might not be a a season in a few years. If he asks for too much money they will let him go. I really like ‘Tone and think he is a quality WR, but look at what they did with Plaxico, Randle el, and (although a different position) Joey Porter. They don’t keep guys around to overpay them. That being said, Hines Ward will be a lot older when that decision needs to be made. Maybe it is worth the large investment to keep him around as Hines Ward may decline in skill or just decide to pack it in. Either way there current roster of WRs is Ward, Tone, Wallace (who looked like he is going to be very good), Battle, Sweed (as of now I think), Randle el (who is not young), Grishem, Chery, and London. That is a lot of guys, obviously they are not keeping all of them, but where is the room for Dez or Tate? Are they thinking that Ward and Tone will be gone in the next few years?

    Yeah this is the business…
Guys like him want to got to a bigger market with bigger clubs and more chickenheads to throw drinks on. Sad, but this is the NFL.
Here’s hoping he does well this season to earn that future contract. Wherever it may be…

  11. Stillerz says: Apr 8, 2010 4:05 PM

This sucks because I have loved Tone since we drafted him but he is really starting to become the new TO/Brandon Marshall. I hope we can do better than just letting him walk next offseason thou

  12. Friedrich_Nietzsche says: Apr 8, 2010 4:05 PM

They finished 9-7 with Holmes, they can do the same without him.

  13. steelersmichele says: Apr 8, 2010 4:05 PM

Eyeing a bigger market to get paid what he’s worth? Maybe he should talk to receivers Burress and Randle El about what it’s like to leave Pittsburgh for more money. One is in jail and the other just returned back home. Maybe talk to Larry Foote who left for more money and just came back, too.
Not saying a player can’t leave for more money (’cause isn’t that the way in sports), but sometimes it’s not the best decision. And I can see Holmes pulling a Burress soon afterwards (if he already hasn’t).

  14. Deb says: Apr 8, 2010 4:06 PM

Where’s Laird getting his info? Did Holmes tweet that, too? Oh goodness. Not even sure how to react to this. If it’s true, perhaps he’s hoping his many screwups would be less noticeable in, say, New York or Philly?
Well, if it’s true, fine. Bye. But even if you’re a native son, please don’t toss back or toss over or toss around anymore drinks in Florida. Our economy has taken enough hits, thanks. We don’t need our cops and courts wasting taxpayer money on this nonsense. Even if you stay in Pittsburgh and nothing comes of any of this, you and your girl, Rubbing Alcohol, should have to compensate the Orlando taxpayers for time wasted by their police force for your sandbox antics.

  15. BroncoBourque says: Apr 8, 2010 4:06 PM

You would think they would be able to get sometihng for Holmes through trade rather than just cut him. If he is available I would think he is worth at least a 3rd round pick, even with the charges still being a possibility.

  16. jamaltimore says: Apr 8, 2010 4:07 PM

Santonio is probably smart since he knows catching passes from Dixon or Batch this year is not going to help his FA status in 11.

  28. robert ethan says: Apr 8, 2010 4:37 PM

Holmes just wants to play his game somewhere warm I bet. He is from Florida and I don’t think those guys ever adjust to the northeast. Golden Tate seems to be a very similar type of receiver and comes in with fewer character issues.

Ummm…. He hasn’t turned into a real threat anyway. Everyone covers Hines. That’s the only reason he ever gets the ball. And with Mike Wallace on his tail, I don’t think he would have been here at “what he thinks he’s worth” without all the legal baggage. And WhoDey_Man, just worry about winning a game in the post season before you run your mouth:)

He said ” I believes I need to pray with my moms fo my new opportunities.”

  38. directormtb says: Apr 8, 2010 5:20 PM

haha ive been saying for about 2 weeks here in comments that the steelers will never pay Holmes what “He” thinks he is worth and im sure someone in free agency will overpay. I mean i love Randel El but look at the rediculous contract he got from Washington. If im not mistaken even Nate Washington got around 10-15 million? Holmes will get paid more than he is worth so what the Steelers need to do is trade him now. With one year left, they should be able to get at least a second round pick for him if not a late 1st round and Mike Wallace will become the number 2. They wont sign him after this year, so get something for him now. GO STEELERS.

  39. Just JTO says: Apr 8, 2010 5:20 PM

  40. Ravenmaniac says: Apr 8, 2010 5:21 PM

I really do not see the steelers taking Dez Bryant due to his diva issues…oh wait they did take ben…..
Everyone should have known $$ would come up with Sanduchio. Granted that was a great catch in the superbowl….but really outside of that isnt he really a mediocre receiver…I think Mike Wallace is better than Holmes.
If they do not take an O Tackle I think the steelers would be smart to take Golden Tate. Alot of people think he is 2nd behind Dez Bryant but when you look at Tates abilities and no diva attitude I would rate him number 1 receiver in the draft.

@bomismorg, Ohio State is actually a very good public university. If you look at the U.S. News and World Reports rankings, it’s the 18th best public university in the country. Some OSU athletes, like college athletes at other schools, may be thugs, but that doesn’t mean that the education provided at OSU is responsible. I’m not sure where you received your college education, but I think you could do far worse than OSU.

  52. HandsofSweed says: Apr 8, 2010 6:48 PM

@ Who Dey Man and Browns 19:
Ever notice that “crumbling” in Pittsburgh is a 9-7 or 8-8 season that misses the playoffs by a three-way, multi-level tiebreaker? I’ll admit: a record that godforsaken bad is an unacceptable and humiliating failure for the Steelers and our fan base. But, anywhere else in the NFL in the last 40 years, those records are just a “mediocre” season. At any rate, the bottom of the barrel in Pittsburgh is higher than the rest of the league. Every other franchise since 1970 has had a period of terror (7-9 or worse) but Pittsburgh.
With that said, the Steelers have their work cut out for them now, just like every season in the last 40 yrs.

  53. Bious says: Apr 8, 2010 7:09 PM

Good WR but far from one of the NFL’s best
And with the off-season incident, it is hard to see why he would think that he would get MUCH on the market

  54. SFrancis1680 says: Apr 8, 2010 7:25 PM

Holmes did an interview about a year ago in the SPORTING NEWS, talking about how much he likes playing for the Steelers, & how he’d like to play his whole career in Pittsburgh, basically contradicting this entire story…. there is ONE BIG DIFFERENCE between the Sporting News story & this post on PFTalk, Holmes was actually interviewed by the Sporting News, asked questions, quoted, …THAT SOUND TO MUCH LIKE WORK TO YOU, FLORIO?…. when they say, he also predicted Arians would be FIRED, was that LAIRD or FLORIO, who also got that one wrong?

  55. Deb says: Apr 8, 2010 7:37 PM

Laird isn’t the most credible reporter, but if Holmes really is whining about the Steelers not paying him enough, the Steelers will bid him farewell. The Rooneys don’t believe in overpaying people who only touch the ball a few times a game … especially not when they’ve generated as much negative press as Holmes has generated recently. He would be wise to simply take what he’s being paid, practice hard, and keep his mouth shut. But wisdom doesn’t seem to be part of his skill set.
    @WhoDey_Man …
Okay, that was funny. I can’t begrudge a Bengals fan one of life’s rare pleasures ;-)
