Report: Santonio could be eyeing a bigger market

NFL_holmes1.jpgAt a time when there’s a belief that receiver Santonio Holmes could be the fall guy for the recent string of alleged misbehavior in the ‘Burgh, there’s a report that Santonio may want to say “sayonara” to the Steel City.

Ken Laird of ESPN 1250 reports that Holmes doesn’t believe that the Steelers will pay him “what he believes he’s worth” on a new contract, and that Holmes would prefer to play in a big market in 2011.

The possible divorce between the Steelers and the MVP of Super Bowl XLIII could explain the team’s decision to bring receivers Dez Bryant and Golden Tate in for a pre-draft visit.  Both could be available when the Steelers exercise the 18th overall pick in the draft.

  1. Yep…sounds right…the Looneys are looking to bring in Dez Bryant…he should fit right in.

  2. another ohio state idiot.he did nothing but get number 2 reciever numbers throughout his brief career and is only known for smoking pot, assaulting woman and tapping his toe in the super bowl.ohio state needs to add courses in their university to make respectible young men.

  3. Gee, last time a big name #1 receiver left Pittsburgh for a big market…that turned out really well. Didn’t it Plaxico?

  4. But remember, this is the same guy that reported that Bruce Arians was gonna be fired.

  5. FLORIO, given the fact that there may be a LOCKOUT in 2011, & how a lot of players who thought they would be free agents, WERE NOT b/c they didn’t have enough service time, YOU are presuming to know a lot about who can and cannot be a free agent in 2011. Howard Eskin talks about bloggers “WHO MAKE THINGS UP” & just b/c he has you on his radio show, doesn’t mean that you aren’t the village idiot.

  6. This is really looking into the future as there might not be a a season in a few years. If he asks for too much money they will let him go. I really like ‘Tone and think he is a quality WR, but look at what they did with Plaxico, Randle el, and (although a different position) Joey Porter. They don’t keep guys around to overpay them. That being said, Hines Ward will be a lot older when that decision needs to be made. Maybe it is worth the large investment to keep him around as Hines Ward may decline in skill or just decide to pack it in. Either way there current roster of WRs is Ward, Tone, Wallace (who looked like he is going to be very good), Battle, Sweed (as of now I think), Randle el (who is not young), Grishem, Chery, and London. That is a lot of guys, obviously they are not keeping all of them, but where is the room for Dez or Tate? Are they thinking that Ward and Tone will be gone in the next few years?

  7. who comes up with these first names? santonio? im italian and that name sounds wicked retahhhhded.

  8. Yeah this is the business…
Guys like him want to got to a bigger market with bigger clubs and more chickenheads to throw drinks on. Sad, but this is the NFL.
Here’s hoping he does well this season to earn that future contract. Wherever it may be…

  9. This sucks because I have loved Tone since we drafted him but he is really starting to become the new TO/Brandon Marshall. I hope we can do better than just letting him walk next offseason thou

  10. Eyeing a bigger market to get paid what he’s worth? Maybe he should talk to receivers Burress and Randle El about what it’s like to leave Pittsburgh for more money. One is in jail and the other just returned back home. Maybe talk to Larry Foote who left for more money and just came back, too.
Not saying a player can’t leave for more money (’cause isn’t that the way in sports), but sometimes it’s not the best decision. And I can see Holmes pulling a Burress soon afterwards (if he already hasn’t).

  11. Where’s Laird getting his info? Did Holmes tweet that, too? Oh goodness. Not even sure how to react to this. If it’s true, perhaps he’s hoping his many screwups would be less noticeable in, say, New York or Philly?
Well, if it’s true, fine. Bye. But even if you’re a native son, please don’t toss back or toss over or toss around anymore drinks in Florida. Our economy has taken enough hits, thanks. We don’t need our cops and courts wasting taxpayer money on this nonsense. Even if you stay in Pittsburgh and nothing comes of any of this, you and your girl, Rubbing Alcohol, should have to compensate the Orlando taxpayers for time wasted by their police force for your sandbox antics.

  12. You would think they would be able to get sometihng for Holmes through trade rather than just cut him. If he is available I would think he is worth at least a 3rd round pick, even with the charges still being a possibility.

  13. Santonio is probably smart since he knows catching passes from Dixon or Batch this year is not going to help his FA status in 11.
Did they bring back Benster Molestor for pre-draft interview?

  14. So is he banking on there not being a cap in 2011? Or a season in 2011? Ugh…that’s the underlying theme in this story.

  15. they are llokin for a replacement for hines ward. especially if golden tate is still around at the right time. the have a replacement for santonio in mike wallace. they also have randel el as a number three guy

  16. I think Tebow would be a better fit. Go from a hell raisen Ben to a guy who probably hasn’t said any of George Carlin’s famous 7 little bitty words.
    Won’t bang young tramps.
Tim Tebow at 18 for the Pittsburg Squealers.
    You read it hear.

  17. Iron City not Steel City. Like in Iron City Brewery!!!
Can somebody please send Florio an Old Flothingslosh!

  18. Hey Holmes you want to play for a big city? Play for the Bears or Jets, they each have 1 Super Bowl and are make the playoffs every few years! What an idiot!

  19. i love watching an afc north team crack and crumble that’s not the bengals. glorious. refreshingly enough it’s not the other team from ohio either. bonus.

  20. Can you Imagine the Steelers drafting Golden Tate can see it now Big Ben will start complaining again that his receivers are too short, and pi$$
off Hines Ward again that would be classic Lol.

  21. Holmes just wants to play his game somewhere warm I bet. He is from Florida and I don’t think those guys ever adjust to the northeast. Golden Tate seems to be a very similar type of receiver and comes in with fewer character issues.

  22. Where’s Laird getting his info? Did Holmes tweet that, too? Oh goodness. Not even sure how to react to this. If it’s true, perhaps he’s hoping his many screwups would be less noticeable in, say, New York or Philly?

  23. Just because the Bungles #1 criminal jumped out of a moving truck doesn’t mean you don’t have your share of problems. Just ask Rey Rey. Media has moved on from you guys because they expect it now.

  24. Ummm…. He hasn’t turned into a real threat anyway. Everyone covers Hines. That’s the only reason he ever gets the ball. And with Mike Wallace on his tail, I don’t think he would have been here at “what he thinks he’s worth” without all the legal baggage. And WhoDey_Man, just worry about winning a game in the post season before you run your mouth:)

  25. Patsfan54
Are you serious? Do you really think BB would sign this guy? NOT
He’ll be looking for $$ and he’s not worth the hassle as the Steelers fans would agree.

  26. This is the same guy that reported that Bruce Arians had been fired. Then when that didn’t happen he reported that Ben “saved” Arians……which has been refuted by Mike Tomlin.

  27. I’ve heard that Santo is pissed because the Steelers refused to even consider putting any rib meat into the new “Ruthlessonfurburger” burger that’s going to be sold at Heinz this season.
He said ” I believes I need to pray with my moms fo my new opportunities.”

  28. haha ive been saying for about 2 weeks here in comments that the steelers will never pay Holmes what “He” thinks he is worth and im sure someone in free agency will overpay. I mean i love Randel El but look at the rediculous contract he got from Washington. If im not mistaken even Nate Washington got around 10-15 million? Holmes will get paid more than he is worth so what the Steelers need to do is trade him now. With one year left, they should be able to get at least a second round pick for him if not a late 1st round and Mike Wallace will become the number 2. They wont sign him after this year, so get something for him now. GO STEELERS.

  29. Ken Laird is a deuche. As an insider, he’s about as clued in as Nutting is for Sports Owner of the Year.

  30. I really do not see the steelers taking Dez Bryant due to his diva issues…oh wait they did take ben…..
Everyone should have known $$ would come up with Sanduchio. Granted that was a great catch in the superbowl….but really outside of that isnt he really a mediocre receiver…I think Mike Wallace is better than Holmes.
If they do not take an O Tackle I think the steelers would be smart to take Golden Tate. Alot of people think he is 2nd behind Dez Bryant but when you look at Tates abilities and no diva attitude I would rate him number 1 receiver in the draft.

  31. Yea, Plaxico Burress left the Steelers to play in a “bigger market” too. The Steelers won the SB the very next season and Burress is now in jail. Go forward young man….go forward.

  32. Holmes should have a good heart to heart with Randle-El. ARE found out he wasn’t in Kansas anymore.

  33. Ken Laird of ESPN 1250 reports that Holmes doesn’t believe that the Steelers will pay him “what he believes he’s worth”…
    ——————————————-
Doesn’t he mean he thinks won’t pay him “what he believes he’s WURF?”

  34. Bomisorg
First of how do you know he hit that women? i hope you realize right now he’s innocent. He had two feet in bounds when he made that catch in the superbowl so what does that have to do with him not being a nice guy.
    P.S. Your a moron !.

  35. “PatsFan54 says:

He would look nice in a Patriots uniform ”
    NO He would NOT.

  36. @bomismorg, Ohio State is actually a very good public university. If you look at the U.S. News and World Reports rankings, it’s the 18th best public university in the country. Some OSU athletes, like college athletes at other schools, may be thugs, but that doesn’t mean that the education provided at OSU is responsible. I’m not sure where you received your college education, but I think you could do far worse than OSU.

  37. Steeler fans are *soooo* touchy these days.
The chest-thumping machismo is gone. Nothing but whining and defensiveness now.
    I love it.

    Eddie George…

  39. You folks using Plax and Randle El as examples are not thinking correctly. So what of El never won a SB there and Plax is in Jail. They got their $$ didn’t they?
I would love to see Holmes go away. Good ridence.

  40. @ Who Dey Man and Browns 19:
Ever notice that “crumbling” in Pittsburgh is a 9-7 or 8-8 season that misses the playoffs by a three-way, multi-level tiebreaker? I’ll admit: a record that godforsaken bad is an unacceptable and humiliating failure for the Steelers and our fan base. But, anywhere else in the NFL in the last 40 years, those records are just a “mediocre” season. At any rate, the bottom of the barrel in Pittsburgh is higher than the rest of the league. Every other franchise since 1970 has had a period of terror (7-9 or worse) but Pittsburgh.
With that said, the Steelers have their work cut out for them now, just like every season in the last 40 yrs.

  41. Good WR but far from one of the NFL’s best
And with the off-season incident, it is hard to see why he would think that he would get MUCH on the market

  42. Holmes did an interview about a year ago in the SPORTING NEWS, talking about how much he likes playing for the Steelers, & how he’d like to play his whole career in Pittsburgh, basically contradicting this entire story…. there is ONE BIG DIFFERENCE between the Sporting News story & this post on PFTalk, Holmes was actually interviewed by the Sporting News, asked questions, quoted, …THAT SOUND TO MUCH LIKE WORK TO YOU, FLORIO?…. when they say, he also predicted Arians would be FIRED, was that LAIRD or FLORIO, who also got that one wrong?

  43. Laird isn’t the most credible reporter, but if Holmes really is whining about the Steelers not paying him enough, the Steelers will bid him farewell. The Rooneys don’t believe in overpaying people who only touch the ball a few times a game … especially not when they’ve generated as much negative press as Holmes has generated recently. He would be wise to simply take what he’s being paid, practice hard, and keep his mouth shut. But wisdom doesn’t seem to be part of his skill set.
    @WhoDey_Man …
Okay, that was funny. I can’t begrudge a Bengals fan one of life’s rare pleasures 😉
    @ampats …
Wonders never cease. We finally agree on something. Can’t see BB picking up Holmes–if this story is true.

  44. Dont be surprised to see the Steelers trade Holmes on draft day . Get the best pick you can for him and let him go . I bet the Raiders would give up a first round pick .

We’re just being quiet at the moment waiting for the Georgia law enforcement to reach a conclusion one way or the other. But no matter how all this turns out, come the 2010 season all the Steelers fans will be happily watching the Steelers pound the crap out of your team. It’s good to be hated.
    GO STEELERS!

  46. “You folks using Plax and Randle El as examples are not thinking correctly.”
The thinking is that the Steelers wouldn’t overpay for them; they let someone else do that.

  47. He might find a bigger market, but there is no bigger fan base than the Squeelers.
Some might argue the Cowboys, but the Squeelers success has moved them into the hearts of warm weather fans on the west-coast.

  48. @trickbunny …
Actually, I’ve never really been one for chest-thumping machismo, Bunny Hop. But come the fall, whatever happens, I think we’ll stack up fine against your Browns. One win in … how many years? … doesn’t make a trend 😉

  49. @trickbunny: came in here to give you a verbal whoopin, but I see that Klytus and Deb took care of that for me.. thanks guys.
@SFrancis1680: I thought the same thing, but hey, I’ve seen much worse on PFT, so not a lot of fact in more than half of the postings, esp. Steeler ones.
We’re just hanging out, waiting for Ben’s case to be dismissed, but when that happens.. OH MY, you haters better be ready. Either way, once the season starts, you’ll see the Steeler fans take over the site, just like they do your stadiums.

  50. I would like to think that they learned their lesson drafting receivers in the first round. Bye Bye David Tyree Jr., don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
