Mark Brunell blocked from joining Jets by Jason Taylor

Veteran quarterback Mark Brunell wants to join the Jets, according to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post.  But Brunell can’t do so until linebacker Jason Taylor makes up his mind.

The reason arises from the “Final Eight Plan.”  The Jets can sign only one unrestricted free agent, given the recent decision of kicker Jay Feely to sign with the Cardinals.  They can’t sign a second UFA until a second unrestricted free agent joins a new team, and Taylor has dibs on the spot created by Feely.

Signing Brunell, who won a Super Bowl ring with the Saints in 2009, could be an indication that the team plans to move on from Kellen Clemens, a second-round pick in 2006 who wants to be a starter and who would be the starter if he had generated a passer rating of higher than 60.9 when he finally got the chance.

Not crying..but the jets picked a bad year to be in AFC championship they get screwed all around..final four free agent rules which are assinine…and the draft where final 4 are autimatically in last 4 picks as compared to regular record plus playoffs aside from 2 Super Bowl teams..but just more of a reason ALL the players want to join the jets next years super bowl champion

Gives a whole new meaning to the term “cock block”.

Yeah, whereas Mark Sanchez’s 63.0 is enough to earn him the starting job.

  4. Dylan says: Apr 9, 2010 5:22 PM

Or he could just wait until Marques Douglas signs with a new team…

if the jets land jason taylor, every qb will dread the game they play against the jets. between the pass rush coming after him and the blanket covering his top two receivers, qb’s are gonna be knocked around, throwing picks, or settling for incompletions quite often. its hard not to like the jets as the afc favorite in 2010

NFL has set the date for when final eight teams can sign UFA’s on July 22. So, hang tight Mark. You’ll be a Jet on that day.

July 22 a key date for “Final Eight”

I’ve been alerted to an unpublicized provision in the NFL’s “Final Four” and “Final Eight” signing restrictions that could end up helping the Jets.
A league spokesman confirmed today that the Jets and the seven other teams that reached the divisional round of the playoffs last season will be free as of July 22 to sign unrestricted free agents and do so at any salary level, regardless of whether the “Final Eight” teams had lost an unrestricted free agent of their own.
The only stipulation is that the unrestricted free agent was not tendered a contract offer by June 1 of at least 110 percent of his 2009 salary by his previous team.
That’s potentially good news for the Jets, because between now and July 22, the “Final Eight” teams can only sign an unrestricted free agent if they lose one to another club — and then at roughly the same first-year salary of the departing player.
In the Jets’ case, they currently have just one such slot available for an unrestricted free agent (at $1.5 million in the first year) after losing kicker Jay Feely to the Cardinals.

wow….some of these posters must think jason taylor is still 24yrs old and an all pro. there happens to be a reason that no other team is knocking at his door….including the dolphins where he REALLY wants to play. Jets fans must think they are getting the 2004 version of LT, Brunell and Jason Taylor….lol…………..maybe they should sign T.O. and Marvin Harrison too…..why not Westbrook while they’re at it. talk about drinkin’ the kool-aid…..jets will be fortunate to make the playoffs next year, kinda like they were last year.

  11. SterilizeTHenry says: Apr 9, 2010 5:47 PM

Why is Brunell still in the league anyway?
He’s about 50 years old, he won’t ever be a starter in this league again, and he got his SB ring last year with the Saints.
    Hang it up dude.

  12. Larry David says: Apr 9, 2010 5:55 PM

Wouldn’t the Jets rather sign Marc Bulger to be the backup? Why did they say they have no interest in Bulger but want Brunell?

  13. karmathaitch says: Apr 9, 2010 5:55 PM

There both to old to play. Both are a waste of money and time. Brunell, i didnt know he was still playing let alone JT

  14. WallyWorld says: Apr 9, 2010 6:51 PM

To all you Jets fans who think you may be signing Reggie White circa 1992… if Jason Taylor were worth a damn don’t you think the Fins would be a bit more urgent about retaining him and not let him slip away to a division rival? The guy is talking to the team he hates most because NOBODY else is in the bidding… but why let some facts get in the way of irrational excitement… J-E-T-S DOPES DOPES DOPES!

  15. Bigbluefan says: Apr 9, 2010 6:55 PM

Relax its the jets they shot there load last year they are 40 years away from doing anything worse talking about

  20. Efus says: Apr 9, 2010 10:07 PM

    No.
The Phins are rebuilding their Defense, they need to get younger. Ferguson is suspended for the first 8 games, the secondary can’t tackle, and JT will be playing beside a rookie ILB, most likely. And the Phins are giving up TONS of yards and points next season. And JT wants to be around to explain that?
    OR
JT can go play for the Jets and the #1 Defense in the league, in the media capital of the world. Nah, JT wouldn’t want to do that would he?
And the Jets may get him for 1.5 mil for next season…which is nothing…

  21. BRUTUS9448 says: Apr 9, 2010 10:31 PM

Double wammy. The jets will get a has been LB and have to go with sanchez the whole year

  22. ROBERT says: Apr 9, 2010 11:22 PM

Miami beat the Jets…twice…and they had no one. Taylor doesnt make the Jets better. Jets still not good enough to beat the Colts.

  23. PFTiswhatitis says: Apr 9, 2010 11:29 PM

Stupid Jets fans, JT is elderly and without an offense and barring another team folding to let them into the playoffs again, they’ll still go NOWHERE. Cant wait to hear the Jets fans crying in their beers for another year.

  24. DieHardSkinsFan21 says: Apr 10, 2010 12:26 AM

The biggest question is why would the Jets want a QB that can’t throw the ball 15 yards? He hasn’t been good since he left Jacksonville.

  25. Karlos Long 5877 says: Apr 10, 2010 1:31 AM

12345…. haha your clueless… if you think us phin fans really care about JT goin to the jets, your tarded… obviously our coaching staff doesnt think he has it anymore and i totally agree… go suck some more jet d*c* queer…

  26. www_smoothdaddyride_com says: Apr 10, 2010 3:53 AM

it seems silly to even talk about the Jets…like every year, at the end of the day there really are only 31 teams and a NY wannabee also-ran…They’re the Fred Sanford of the league this year picking up everyone else’s trash and thinking they’ll have a use for it. But the mindset of the Jet’s organization for years has always been upside down, from trading first round picks for jabroni tight ends or the current lazy fat bastard getting his stomach stapled instead of taking advantage of his free access to highly paid and knowledgeable team nutritionists, trainers, and facilities. fat and lazy classless bums just like their fans.

you jets haters are arrogant jealous basta*rds nothing more. because the Jets have a BRIGHTER FUTURE than any of your has been teams.

  29. HellRelle24 says: Apr 10, 2010 11:01 AM

i also find it hilarious that all you haters are wasting your time on a jets post when you could, i dont know, be busy worrying about your teams that werent in the playoffs, and arent going to make the playoffs this year..
smoothdaddy your comments are doing no justice but embarassing yourself. the jets have been drafting probowlers left and right the last few years, obviously some arent going to make the probowl or might bust. but seriously have a better argument than that or rex ryans stomach.

  30. HellRelle24 says: Apr 10, 2010 11:03 AM

123456…miami fans will never have class. they think cause they finally had a season sweep lastyear they can talk all the shit in the world. well its unfortunate that wont happen this year, and neither will them making the playoffs.

  31. Ashley says: Apr 10, 2010 8:57 PM

I don’t care where Brunell ends up as long as it’s not with the Saints. They need to give Chase Daniel a chance or find someone else if Daniel isn’t up to the task.

  32. quadya says: Apr 10, 2010 11:58 PM

and who would be the starter if he had generated a passer rating of higher than 60.9 when he finally got the chance.
    zzziiiing!

  33. monropoobah says: Apr 11, 2010 6:47 AM

we gotta be smarter than signing brunell. sanchez coulda used a vet backup for mentoring last year but it’s too late now.
since the jet defense will be dramatically better than the phins’, he could have a pretty good year and 1.5 is cheap.
fins fans are more about hatred and vitriol than football. i feel sorry for you.
