Raiders exec: Quarterback job is Russell's "to lose"

J. russell.jpgWith Donovan McNabb in Washington, the Raiders must mentally prepare again for life with JaMarcus Russell.

An unnamed team executive spoke with Thomas George of Fanhouse, touting Russell’s early connection with new offensive coordinator Hue Jackson.

The name Bruce Gradkowski wasn’t mentioned once in an article that ended with optimism Russell could “lift up” the Raiders.  There will be competition at quarterback, but it sounds like Russell is in the driver’s seat.  Again.

“We have to develop an attitude, a belief as a team and organization of
winning thinking and preparation,” the source told George.  “That has to come from JaMarcus and
from his position. It’s his job to lose. He is aware of that.”

We wonder if Gradkowski is aware of that too.

This reeks of one of those bogus “unnamed source” rumors that McNabb called out in yesterday’s press conference.
Anybody who follows the Raiders closely knows by now that Al’s brain trust is a small, tightly knit circle, that leaks nothing. They have no relationship with the local media, let alone the national football “insiders” or anybody else.
That’s why the Mock Drafts are all over the place, and pure speculation. That’s why nobody had a clue what would happen with Cable. That’s why this post is pure, unsubstantiated rumor.

  5. HellsGrimTyrant says: Apr 9, 2010 9:25 PM

And the slide continues for Jimmy Clausen.

  7. xR11Rx says: Apr 9, 2010 9:27 PM

Don’t worry, Russell will probably go into camp as the #1 (if the Raiders don’t trade for Campbell) and he’ll lose that #1 status before the season. I mean, cuz let’s be honest. If there is a TRUE QB competition, there’s no way Russell beats out Gradkowski. If there is a TRUE QB competition, Gradkowski wins it by a landslide. But I am hoping the Raiders trade for Campbell so that it gets Russell’s FAT ASS closer to getting released! But that’s in a perfect world and unfortunately that has little to no chance of happening.

  8. OLDschool says: Apr 9, 2010 9:31 PM

Well no shite Shine Box Florio. Davis ain’t about to admit he jacked up another draft pick like Jamissthemarcus Russel.
    This is news?
Florio, enough with the zero content posts. And while you are at it, go get your fkn shine box.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Seriously though, what does Russell have to do to convince the Raiders that he sucks? Most QB’s have trouble earning a job in the NFL, but Russell can’t even lose his no matter how hard he tries! The Raiders are a joke. At least the Lions and Rams are moving in the right direction. The Raiders are getting worse, if thats even possible. Raiders need to either get Vick, or trade up for Clausen.

  10. dogma1 says: Apr 9, 2010 9:33 PM

Unnamed? Hahaha what a joke. I know for a fact Russell is going to get cut, Al won’t pay Russell the 9 million he is due in a few months.

  11. BigBaldPapaHawk says: Apr 9, 2010 9:35 PM

Does it speak volumes of the Raiders’ organization that Russell has not already lost the position?

  12. Oakfan23 says: Apr 9, 2010 9:37 PM

Gregg, this doesn’t mean he is the week 1 starter, he could “lose” it in training camp just like Cable said

  13. Johnnyutah24 says: Apr 9, 2010 9:37 PM

Well this is good news for gradkowski and company then, because Russell won’t win the job anyways. Russell is actually proclaiming already that he is the biggest bust ever in the NFL. Ryan leaf can finally have some peace and hand over the torch.

  14. Tom says: Apr 9, 2010 9:37 PM

It is as if the Raiders organization has Alzheimer’s disease. Their actions are unexplainable and maybe the team reflects the owner.

  17. RaidersBlowChunks says: Apr 9, 2010 9:39 PM

We will win with JaMarcus because he is a top 10 QB and our defense is stout. The AFC West has no shot to take this division away from us. Raiders baby!!

  18. chimi says: Apr 9, 2010 9:41 PM

Not even close to news. Everyone knew he had 1 more chance otherwise he would have been released already. That’s what a $30 million dollar investment buys, one more chance.

  39. bison4me2010 says: Apr 9, 2010 10:35 PM

You all should get Jason Campbell. I’m telling you he’s head and shoulders above Russell, he was totally utilized the wrong way in Washington. You all have a line, and receiving a corps. He’ll put in his work to learn the offense and you can get him for the cheap. He also has a cannon for a arm. He lacks the quick read throw, but is the prototypical play-action pass QB. Its a stop gap until you guys draft another QB next year or two years from now.

  40. GirthyOne says: Apr 9, 2010 10:39 PM

Maybe he wins it by a lazy contest.

  41. Raider8Earl says: Apr 9, 2010 10:39 PM

That is nonsense. So they go from potentially signing Donovan McNabb to giving the reins to JaMarcus? I don’t buy it. The Raiders are not happy at QB for a reason. That is if the Raiders or minimally rationale today. If they tried to get Donovan, that suggested some very rationale thinking.

  45. SleazyWhipcashPersonalInjuryAttorney says: Apr 9, 2010 10:49 PM

Here are a few things about Russell that are often overlooked:
    1. He takes hits like a man – and trust me, he has taken plenty of hits behind a horrible offensive line
    2. Nobody on the team has spoken out against him, despite the obvious horrible play, work ethic concerns, and fact he makes 100 times more than most of his teammates who earned their place on the team the hard way. This seems to suggest they either fear or respect him. Either way, these are signs of a natural leader.
    3. He has a very quick release, throws tight spirals with great spin, and has has the strongest arm in the NFL
    4. He has remained remarkably poised through the great adversity he has faced. While this is generally viewed in a negative way, this would be a good trait to have in crunch time.
    5. He seems immature, but this can change
    6. He lost his two father figures over the past year
His career is still salvageable. It could be one of the great stories of the 2010 season. This may be a long shot, but it is certainly not impossible.

they can talk all they want but I would think the players reaction when gradkowski took over says it all. if they want to be competetive then make him earn the job and the players respect. the fact he may be more talented did not stop the players from rallying behind gradkowski when he took over and then fry or whoever when he went down. the players realised those guys cared about the job and gave all that they had and did the best they could unlike russell.

I think Clausen is going to be a top 5 pick after his Pro Day. The same thing happened with Sanchez. He was predicted to go in the mid-late 1st or even the 2nd round, and ended up being taken at #5. The Seahwaks or Browns could end up taking Clausen. Even if the Raiders don’t need to trade up, my point is that they should draft him. I know OT is a huge need, but I think it would be smarter to trade for Gaither. He would probably only cost a 2nd round pick. The Raiders traded away next years first, so they probably won’t have another chance to get a franchise QB until 2012. Imo that is too long to wait for a franchise QB. I’m a Jets fan so I don’t really care what you do. I do feel bad for you guys though. If your owner didn’t pick players based on 40 times, you might have a pretty decent team.

    1. So men taking a hit like a man means fumbling the ball anytime you’re touched?
    2. Virtually everyone on the team who has been interviewed about JaMarcus has said things along the lines of he needs to work harder, he needs to mature or have gone out of their way to praise the leadership/work ethic of Gradkowski.
    3. Agree with you there. Despite his struggles he might actually throw the best deep slant pass in the NFL. So much zip that it’s almost indefensible and probably his most accurate throw. Despite his surreal arm strength, he’s much better passing between the hashes than to the sidelines.
    4. You could be right, or maybe he just doesn’t care all that much and you’re mistaking apathy for poise.
    5. True. Or it might not until long after we’ve given up on him.
    6. Also true. But will he mature or find someone else to guide him or is he just gonna continue to seem lost professionally and blow his golden opportunity.
I’d love to see JaMarcus turn it around. I thought the Raiders should’ve drafted him when they did. However, after 3 seasons, I give him about a 10% chance of getting it going here. The one thing I will say is that he plays much, much better in the last 5 minutes of games in which we’re losing. Maybe if Hue Jackson can just get him to let it fly and play with that same sense of urgency all the time, he’ll break out in 2010.

  61. Dylan says: Apr 10, 2010 12:23 AM

Wow some of you fans as seriously delusional. Russell might be the worst draft pick ever. I can’t think of a worse #1 pick. Russell had (and still has) a million opportunities to prove himself. umm the fact that the qb job is pretty much the pilsbury throw boy’s job to lose is a story from 2008. we all know that is the case. there is no way he is not the leader until he blows games in the regular season. if you know anything about oakland, you know that. so what is the big deal? this is status quo. it is wrong. the “open qb competition” if truly was open would result with gradkowski winning, obviously, but the competetion is not open. it is dictated by Al, and he still likes Russell, no matter what my fellow fans think. This team has been a shitshow since 2003, why should 2010 be any different?

  69. JSpicoli says: Apr 10, 2010 2:42 AM

I agree that you guy’s need Campbell. You all watched him against you guys last year. He is much better than both the Qbs you have. Sometimes I saw in that game guys running wide open in the beginning of the game playing against Washingtons back ups and barely either of those guys hit them. Campbell is not the kind of guy who throws a lot of picks but last year he was forced to pass ALOT because of zero running game. Normally Qbs have a little more time than Campbell did and he still put up these stats and look at the guys he had healthy. 3616 yards 20 tds 15 ints. Al Davis and the Raiders would be getting a top 15 QB for VERY cheap! Unless you guys got Bradford some how none of the Rookie guys will help your team very soon and will cost even more than Campbell. Its sad and I dont get it?

Another unnamed source mentioned in an article about the Oakland Raiders. So far unnamed sources commenting about the Raiders have been batting zero this off-season, so take this for what it’s worth. Then again, this isn’t much of a reach. I speculate that this QB competition is just damage control to stem the protests from Raiders fans. Those empty seats were a protest against Russell, and not as much against the team itself. I’m willing to bet that even if Russell doesn’t win the competition, Al will still make the coaches start him. Well, unless he completely bombs, then he’ll probably be cut.
I’ll have to say this to comment made by Dylan midway through the page. If you think Mike Vick will help the Raiders, you really have no clue. His best days are behind him, and he was never a truly good QB. If Vick were to go to the Raiders, they might as well start Russell. The results would be the same.

“JaMarcus is a great plaayah. Get ovah it” Al Doofus at the (in)famous “Lance” Kiffin P.C.
As a Raider fan I want to borrow a phrase the Jets fans used to say J-E-T-S (Just End The Season).
Suks to be us. Cant wait to see what bust like Bruce Campbell the crypt keeper reaches for and drafts at 8.

I think this article is being misinterpreted.
It’s JaFatone’s job “to lose”. So, he loses every time he plays. So, in order for the Raiders to win a game, JaFatone doesn’t get playing time. Then, we win.
    Now do you understand?

    Jamissthemarcus Russel.
    Now that’s funny

The Raiders deserve all the grief they get here, but despite all the McNabb rumors and such, Oakland hasn’t chased any high-profile free agents this offseason. And while they seemed to have whiffed on their early picks, like McFadden and Hayward-Bey, they have found some good players with their lower picks. The Russell debacle will carry into this season, but not beyond. And since they play in the AFC West, they don’t have to be very good to be competitive.

Damit Raider fans, I have had it with you .. I have something to say to all Raider fans.. Russell is an elite athlete and a great player..
Check your roster, big Donkey. Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn. Check the scoreboard. Lost to Russell at home. Started 6-0. Finished 8-8. Takes big donkey gonads to talk shit with a record like that.

You know the saddest part of this? It’s not the doddering owner or that JaHamburger doesn’t get it and doesn’t care so long as he gets more milkshakes – it’s the calls for Bruce freaking Gradkowski. Yes he’s better than a fat bowling ball at quarterback, but that is damn low bar. You can talk about his “heart” all you want, but I want to talk about his talent. He’s goodback/spot starter. I know he looked for a few games (and great in comparison), but no team is contending with this guy under center. He washed out of Tampa and Cleveland for a reason and if he starts all year in 2010 you’ll learn what it is.

raider haters sux it….and thank you PATS for the 3rd and 5th round picks this year…How is Burgess working out for ya? oh yeah he not even on the team anymore…HaHAHAHA

So this begs the question…what is harder for JR to lose? Weight, or the starting job with the Raiders? ;)

Jamarcus Is The best qb in the west. It really dosent matter who the qb is, either way the raiders will win the superbowl, and white girls love black men

Were you happy last season when your defense was getting torched week after week without Seymour on the d-line?

  90. scrapdawg12 says: Apr 10, 2010 1:33 PM

Jamarcus’s job to lose? Hasn’t he lost almost every game he has played in? They should sign Marc Bulger. The Raiders are a good team missing a QB. Heck, I could pay better than Jacarcus Bustel

  91. jpchief says: Apr 10, 2010 1:42 PM

As a chiefs fan i hope he stays the starter for a long time. But as a football fan its ridiculous when you take a chance on a rookie for 30 mil and it sets your franchise back years. This is why they need a rookie salary cap!!!!

Congrats on the extra picks. Hopefully Al won’t cut the guys he drafts prior to signing them… Like he did with one guy last season.

Concerning his body, team officials have stated, “Weight is Russell’s to lose”.

  106. RedOokies says: Apr 12, 2010 6:30 PM

The idea that Jamarcus is a bigger bust than Ryan Leaf is preposterous, the Raiders didn’t give up anything to get the pick.

  107. Beeray13 says: Apr 13, 2010 10:29 AM

Al Davis is the biggest moron ever. Russell is a bust and this would be the perfect time to cut him since it is an uncapped year. They will most likely cut him next year when it will cost them 9 mil towards the cap. This only makes sense to one man Count Al Davis AKA Dracula.
