The 2010 draft begins in only 11 days. For the first time, it invades prime time, with round one on Thursday night, rounds two and three on Friday, and the rest on Saturday.
We’ve been hearing for weeks that the second day will entail plenty of possible wheeling and dealing, with the Rams (who hold the top selection in round two) dangling the pick to the highest bidder and other teams at the top of the second stanza working out contingent deals with those who’d like to jump up and snag rookies who squirted through round one.
Pats coach Bill Belichick agrees.
“I kind of think the second round will now be like the first round,”
Belichick tells Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “Take those [top] 32 players out of there, whoever they
are, now you’re starting all over again for that second round. And I can
see it being approached more as that first round.
“In the past, you kind of rolled into that round. Now, to actually
stop and have the whole night to sit there and think about it and talk
to other teams and develop a new strategy. Everybody does that on the
second day; now we have three days. It’s a different dynamic.”
As a practical matter, it means that the top of round four also could entail some drama, since it’s the round to launch the Saturday action. The extent to which the possibility of trades could generate interest remains to be seen; though we expect a huge increase in the ratings for Thursday night and a strong showing on Friday, the Saturday 4-5-6-7 phase could end up being an event that even the most die-hard NFL fans will avoid, especially if the sun is out, the grill is hot, and the pool is luke.
im so glad my days off from work just got changed to thursday and friday, just in time
I wonder if the NFL intended for this or if the change was all about ratings. This is great. Combine this with a rookie wage scale and teams will really be able to allocate their resources better. Better researched draft picks (or at least time to evaluate as you laid out above) and don’t have to “waste” money on a bunch of players yet to take a snap in an NFL game….regular season OR pre-season.
Oh my gosh. more words of wisdom from the “genius”.
Please somebody tell me how well his picks have turned out over the last 4-5 years?
Not that great.
The fact that everyone in the ESPN region coined Mr. Turd the “genius” without taking into account how he obtained those tainted and fraudulent *Super Bowl championships* shows just how clueless the nor’eastern population is.
The Patriots are irrelevent. Their whole bandwagon fanbase jumped off during the beatdown the Ravens leveled upon them in the playoffs. The whole country saw how the “fans” filed out of the stadium so early in the game. They all knew the smoke and mirrors”dynasty” was done.
Oh well, now it seems those same loyal, diehard “fans” have now jumped on another bandwagon……… the J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS.
Blackglass, Pats52, and all the other lame fake Pats backers need to own up, fess up, and admit that you are now Jets fans for the next 10 years, just like you became Pats “fans” 10 years ago.
You know deep inside that Belicheat is Big Rex’s b!tch!
While I’m not sure I’m 100% excited about the Draft starting on a Thursday, the amount of trades it will set up on Friday will be a great new feature.
The 7th round is also the new 6th round and so on…
In answer to other questions, Belicheat said he felt a SpyGate-tainted Lombardi is just as good as a real Lombardi – better in some ways.
“It really means that what we did was spit in Goodell’s face, and laughed at all those loser fans. It really gives me a great feeling, like I gave a big ‘F-You’ to the whole Super Bowl obsessed world. I’m kind of like Che Guevara in that way.”
I’m actually pissed off that they are having the draft on a f’n Thursday night. Why the hell couldn’t they have selected Friday night instead? Now I have to burn a vacation day on Friday to do what in previous years was always done on the weekend.
Bastards.
Would have to agree with starting the draft on Thursday night making the whole second day an opportunity for teams to talk more and propose more trades. I see some 2010 NFL Draft Running Back previews are up by Russ Bliss at: http://www.fantasyfootballstarters.com/2010-NFL-Draft-Running-Backs.jsp
My only hope is Spiller is the 17th pick of the Niners after one of those tackles falls to them or they could trade down and get into a wild second day.
…and the pool is luke?
What am I reading?
Nice to see the two idiots Childplease and ItalianWop chiming in with jokes about spygate. Let’s hear it from someone who isn’t talking out of their ass:
“Listen, there’s people stealing signals all the time before that. You have ways to hide those things. We had wristbands for our defense. I remember trying to get offensive plays and see what the formations were. Everybody knows.
“You’re trying to gain a competitive edge. Did that go beyond it? To a degree. Do I think that helped them win football games? No. You still have to go out and play the game. I still have a hard time believing that was a difference in a game.”

This is the same group that thought that MNF was a bad idea and that NO ONE would watch the draft – what do you think?
Oh and don’t believe for ONE MOMENT that a rookie wage scale will make a difference – except to make the rich richer. These guys didn’t get bad because of rookie pay, they got bad because they’re BAD at their jobs.
Oh and don’t think for one moment that the NFL has NEVER had this problem with rookie pay. Let’s not forget that back in the ’60s, there were bonus babies, guys were babysitting draft choices so that they wouldn’t be able to competing offers from the other league and Joe Willy signed for $400,000+ when that was a lot of money.
child please is a perfect name for u because that’s what u sound like. The jets suck. Better hope Greene don’t get hurt again because ur backup is a crybaby has been and ur qb is the worse franchise qb I’ve ever seen. The pats will be in the hunt again. FYI I’m a rams fan, so no bandwagon here, just truth.
Child_Please! I hate the Patriots as much as the next guy but you write that crap on every Patriots post I see. I doubt after a few seasons of not winning the Superbowl that every New England fan will go nuts and stop rooting for them. I mean the Colts gave the Jets a beat down after handing them the playoffs. Then they beat down the Ravens as well. Are we to assume they all are irrelevant now as well?
Belicheat is such a douchenozzle.
I get what he means, that there is a slightly ungraded element of strategy that comes into play now, by making the 2nd round start the day after the 1st, but seriously…if you take out the top 32 players of any draft, you take out like 50% of the pro-bowlers. That’s 32 picks out of like 250+ and (I don’t know the math, just guesstimating) 50% of the top-tier talent. Even this year, which is heralded as one of the deepest drafts in recent history, it is ridiculous to approach the 2nd round the same way you approach the 1st.
@Doctor Connors and @ampats:
18-1 baby, 18-1. LOL!!!!
To all the moronic Jests fans quiet down down you haven’t won squat in 41 years. Your HC makes BB look like a kind and gentle soul,or in words that you should your coach is a loud mouth lout. Apparently the fans of his are similar in nature.
Great comeback pizza guy!!
What may be funnier is what is going to happen to your “star idiots” which is more relevant to 2010.
4th place in the AFC North

Make sure next time your listen to some so called expert talking about the draft you pay attention this draft is only great for picking DT and OL, other than that it sucks and your math is way off, 50% of the first rounders turn out to be bust or just average players not PRO Bowlers check the facts knuckle head before you go calling someone a douche
As an Italian and an ARMY vet, I am shamed by your overwhelmingly vaginal demeanor Italian ARMY Guy.
Child_Please is to football commentary what Glenn Beck is to politics. There are so many legitimate gripes about the Pats and Belichick, but they are foregone in lieu of ridiculously blanketed, uninformed, and generally retarded statements. The Pats are so irrelevant that they garner emotion from just about everybody, be it love or hate. Why did you devote the time to post such a long, albeit ridiculous post if they are so irrelevant? Shh. Kiss the baby.
Belichick’s reasoning is correct. However, he only shares it because building the second-round hype based on the new draft structure and the depth of this year’s talent serves his purposes. Otherwise, he wouldn’t mention it. Nothing is free; nothing is without a purpose.
If he can’t get exactly what he wants where he wants it in the first round, he’ll trade out of it and manipulate the second round at every turn.
i cant wait.
Child_Please!…
Child please! The only thing irrelavant are your comments.

Head to head in Playoffs (Belichick era):
New England 2 (41 points in the second game LOL)
Pittsburgh 0
Plus we beat you with our backup.
I would agree and expect many more deals for the 2nd round than ever before
what Glenn Beck is to politics.
Beck seems pretty informed to me.
If he’s so wrong, provide one example please.
Well Bill should trade his first round pick for a 2nd and a 3rd then.
Child_Please!
Your the biggest NJ Jest front-runner of them all. Your Jests get a few wins and now you’re “SuperFan”. When was the last time the Jets won a real fuc*ing thing? (ha ha) You wouldn’t know as you just started taking them seriously when “Jests Fever” struck the Long Island toilet you live in in January. When they take a dive again next year you’ll disappear. Poseur. Try to stick to your normal musings on what it’s like to have Dirty Sanchez’s balls bounce of your chin like a speed-bag, otherwise you look like you’re depriving a village somewhere of an idiot. Disrespected. Douchebag.
ZZZZZZZZZZZ. It’s getting old, guys.
Bill Belichick is the greatest coach in the history of the NFL.
Even without this new format, there are plenty of nuggets to be found in the second round. Think of the guys who have been taken in the round and who did as well or better than guys taken in the first round of their “class”: Drew Brees, Ray Rice, Clinton Portis, Chad Johnson, Anquan Boldin and on and on. Some of these guys slipped through the cracks because of size or speed or questions about the competition that they played against.
cheaters never win BELICHEAT
Think about the handle of these two nit-wits: ‘ItalianArmyGuy and “ChildPlease”… pathetic.
I travel a lot in my business. Every time I go to Pittsburgh I have my choice of the 6 or 8 decent looking women in that City. Yeah, the women say that the men in Pittsburgh are weak and have bad hygiene. I just show up and they come to me. Come to think of it, I’ve probably have had both of you clown’s women.
So, here it is: My football team puts it to your Steelers and I put it to your women. Nice, huh? FY!
He also sees a sony video camera as doing just as good a job as a Panasonic.

@ The Wizard
Here are some Glenn Beck gems that are all indefensibly wrong.
1) Andy Stern meets w/ the President more than Hillary Clinton
2) The new health care bill offers coverage for dogs
3) Mitt Romney’s health care plan bankrupting Mass.
4) Less than 10 percent of Obama’s Cabinet appointees “have any experience in the private sector.”
5) Forty-five percent of doctors “say they’ll quit” if health care reform passes.
6) John Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, “has proposed forcing abortions and putting sterilants in the drinking water to control population.”
7) “Why do we have automatic citizenship upon birth? We’re the only country in the world that has it.”
The marble mouthed chowds day after day after day still desperately trying to defend an entire decade of cheating. I think this stuff keeps them up at night, LMFAO.
No one is buying your lame arguments, just stop already, you’re all incredibly embarrassing. Goodell had a bonfire cooking a mile high with all the years of evidence.
You are the Barry Bonds* of the NFL, Get used to it.

There’s not enough time…
New England should have been stripped of all their titles and given to the runner-ups. Baseball banned Shoeless Joe and Pete Rose for far less of a crime. I find it ironic that New England has done squat since Bilicheat got caught. As difficult it is to get to the Super Bowl and then to lose knowing Bilicheat and company broke the rules and cheated. They stole the Ram dynasty, Stole the Cinderella story from my Beloved Panthers and denied Andy Reid and Co. a trophy they deserved more. Roger Goodall did not want to tarnish his legacy to the NFL by stripping New England of their titles. So under the table did all the accusations go and a slap on the wrist to Bilicheat and company. WHAT A CRIME!!!!!
the wizard is a fat guy….i`d bet my life on it.
1) probably right, she’s always in Zambinia or somewhere prominent like that.
2)nobody yet knows the entirety of the bill, how can you say it doesn’t?
3)Massachusetts universal health care is a proven failure by anybody’s account that I’ve read
4)the man himself has none, why would his employees?
5)?
6) don’t have the energy to look it up
7) does seem foolish, doesn’t it?
Get back to me when the middle class tax cut kicks in.
I agree that BB would not have mentioned this if it weren’t to benefit him in some way. The man doesn’t make a sound or move without thinking how it affects his team. The man is obsessed, and this is coming from a fan.
His point however, is valid. The move of draft day means that the teams have more time to prepare their second round picks. This means more research and probably a bit more negotiating and swapping than we have seen before. The second round right now generates more talent per dollar than the first, and most smart teams will be looking for that talent that has slipped by the first round, either in known gems that somehow slipped by everyone because they had higher needs, or in players that they have evaluated higher and have hoped would still be there in round two. Could make for a VERY interesting day.
Oh, and child, you are an idiot. No one I know has suddenly become a Jets fan. Most NE fans, if they are bandwagon fans that are likely to leave, will NOT root for the Jets, and for several VERY good reasons. First, they have come to respect teams, coaches, and players that don’t spend more time talking about how great they are than working to actually become better players. Second, the Jets haven’t been relevant since Namath, and likely will not be for a long time. If you listen to the Jets, they are the best thing to ever happen to the game of football, but if you watch them, you realize they are an assembly of good players more interested in their personal stats and fame rather than actually playing as a team. That kind of team is great for fans like you, who talk but rarely back anything up, but bad for things like actually doing anything significant in the post season.
Same lame Pats fans sucking on Belicheat’s nuts every day here. What a bunch of losers with no other life. Oh, and learn the difference between “your” and “you’re”, morons.

Do you know how to tell when Beck is talking out of his ass?
His lips are moving.
ItalianArmyGuy (What army????)
Dear The Wizard,
You are a sheep. Is it relaxing to be such a buffoon? Do you honestly think that you have a leg up on the rest of the world as a tinfoil hat wearing fool? Glenn Beck is a caricature of the slow witted, scared, racist, “in the way” people that sandbag progress with every breath they take. Most Conservative politicians will tell you that Glenn Beck is a clown. He analyzes immensely complex economic and diplomatic issues as if he is an authority. HE NEVER WENT TO COLLEGE. He is a failed whacky FM DJ that had a morning zoo show that tanked. So yes, as I would assume that since you are either an uneducated, misinformed ass clown, or a delusional uber-religious wing nut, you probably truly think he is right on. Poor you. I promise, you have no idea what you’re talking about. True story. All of the facts that Noisewater posted came from a non-profit political watchdog group, while I assume yours came from whatever podcast/blog that spoon feeds you your nonsense. I am a staunch fiscal conservative and it makes my skin crawl that morons like you have become the face of the Republican Party, as you have assured of us continued Liberal success. You probably don’t possess the self-awareness to realize that I am right, but that’s okay fella, you keep banging your drum.
-Boom, Roasted-
Spygate went down in the first week of the 2007 season.
So basically, the “haven’t won squat” Patriots immediately responded with an 18-1 record…albeit losing the big one.
Here’s the win-loss record up to date.
Regular season 39-12 (11-5 without Brady)
post season 2-2 with a Super Bowl appearance
over all 41-14 That’s pretty good for “haven’t won squat.”
Wow, Richie Bugs is kind of a prick.
Everybody tune in this year to Randy Moss be shut down by Vontae Davis. Belichick needs to be taken down a notch. Clearly, the beatdown dished out by the Ravens wasn’t enough.
