Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

3635.jpgWhat a strange weekend it has been for Santonio Holmes.

Yesterday, we reported that Holmes is facing a four-game suspension under the substance abuse policy.  Tonight, we’re told that the Steelers have traded Holmes to the New York Jets.

It’s the second time in less than a year that the Jets have swung a deal for a former first-round receiver.  Last October, they acquired Braylon Edwards from the Browns.

Like Holmes, Edwards also is facing a possible suspension, after pleading no contest to an assault that occurred only days before he was traded.  Also, both players are signed through 2010.

Suddenly, HBO’s Hard Knocks got a lot more interesting.

UPDATE:  Peter King of SI.com and NBC confirms that it’s a done deal.  Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post reports that the Jets gave up a fifth-round draft pick for Holmes, who was the MVP of Super Bowl XLIII.  A fifth-round draft pick for a former Super Bowl MVP.

  1. Wow, the Rooney’s run a tight ship and do not like the Steelers brand being run thru the mud. From Super Bowl Hero to SEE YA !!!! Glad to see that someone still has values and morals, thank you Mr. Rooney !!

  2. Great deal for the Jets….with legal issues and all….
But this leads me to ask, will they ever get rid of Big Ben??
Two sexual assault allegations> one drink in face/ pot bust…..

  3. Wa wa what!!!! A 5th round pick, I think the Steelers are the ones smoking that cheeba. That is insanity, 4 game suspension or not.

  4. Best way to handle a problem? Ignore it and let someone else deal with it. So long Tone, don’t screw up as bad as Plax did in the Big Apple.

  5. Does that mean he will still be suspend the first 4 games? Enjoy New Youk like Plexiglass had Holmes, YOU BUM!!!! I guess you and Cromartie can see who can produce the most illeagimate kids now!!

  6. So, the Jets add another punk WR to their team that features a big, fat loudmouth head coach, a whiny washed up RB and some of the most obnoxious, trashy fans in the league? Wow, they will be a really easy team to hate.

  7. Too bad we have great receivers like Heyward-Bey and Louis Murphy so we don’t need him. It would’ve been a nice target to have for JaMarcus’ breakout season. Raiders baby!!

  8. WTF
This might be an over-reaction to what has been happening lately…but I guess at least they’re trying to keep the image of their team up.

  9. Do we have any more details on this. Such as how it went down. Who contacted who. Anything? A fifth rounder for holmes seems like a steal for the jets. Even with the 4 game suspension.

  10. This is no suprise, but a 5th? Steelers are in some trouble. Isnt Hines like 34, and who else do they have? Limas Sweed? Mike Wallace? are they gonna convert Dennis Dixon to WR? They are in some trouble. DezBryant to pitt

  11. Wow, now it is really all on Sanchez. If he can get a little better they are going to be dangerous.

  12. Just because you were a Super Bowl MVP does not make you a star in the league. Just ask former MVP Dexter Jackson. You can get a hold of him at the offices of his current team, the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League. At least now we also know the trade value of Deion Branch.

  13. If the Steelers would like to trade Ben Roethlisberger, the Bills would probably give them a fifth round pick for him.

  14. umm….that was unexpected. I hate the Steelers, so any trade that takes talent away from them is good…can’t believe that the Steelers took just a 5th to give him up, legal troubles or no.

  15. Shocker, legal troubles or not.
For a 5th? Santonio was just coming into his own as the #1 WR in Steeltown, not to mention making one of the most (if not the most) epic catches in SB history.
So the Jets only have 1 pick in the 1st 5 rounds now after Lito, Braylon and Santonio?
I agree I am really looking forward to Hark Knocks this year though, and this does just add to it.

  16. WOW this really sucks for the Phins. I HATE the Jets but as an NFL fan I have to say this move is an awesome move for the Jets. They are looking more like a complete team and now Sanchez has a number of weapons. Rex Ryan is a genius.

  17. And the league will still try and disrespect us. Say what you will, the Jets are stacked and are a serious threat.

  18. “A fifth-round draft pick for a former Super Bowl MVP.”
A fifth-round draft pick for a former Super Bowl MVP who may have not even gotten both feet down on that “catch” and who has had trouble with the law and is currently facing a suspension?
Sounds generous. They could have waited until he got cut.

  19. only a fifth round pick r u serious steelers thats it u should have gotten atleast a third round pick

  20. A fifth round pick? Is Pittsburgh so disgusted with Big Ben that they are clearing out Holmes? The Pitt locker room will not be on board with that racist move. If this were a fantasy league, this trade would be laughed at and then rejected! Where are you Commish???

  21. 5th round, WTF…clearly he has character issues but hello….Oakland, Dallas?!?
Glad to see him go though
    Miiiiiike Wallace! xD

  22. I expected Holmes to be Traded but it better not be for a 5th round pick. I expect a round 1 or at least a round 2 and a move up in other rounds.

  23. Welcome to the Jets, the newest home for turds.
L.T. rub a little of your self serving “class” on these guys.
Jason Taylor, you might want to re-think this one.

  24. So, they get rid of Holmes for his conduct. Is this a prelude for #7 to be shipped to Seattle, Cleveland(why not?#5 went in the same division), Carolina, Buffalo. Seems to me that you cant get rid of one without the other.
    I’m jus sayin……

  25. Wow. The Rooneys move quickly with some people and sit on the real losers… Ben! Sweed better come up to speed in the blink of an eye!

  26. Yea, Holmes was a Super Bowl MVP…..and that’s about it. Unless you want to count a pain in the @ss as well. Ben’s next.

  27. What are they smoking in Pennsylvania? Franchise QB in Philly to an archrival. Superbowl MVP for peanuts. Insanity.

  28. Wow, did a Super Bowl MVP just get traded or a 5th round pick? I know this draft is pretty deep but it isn’t that damn deep!! I am completely shocked.

  29. Unbelievable. The three stooges running the Steelers, Art, Colbert and Tomlin are pathetic fools. A SB MVP, 1200 yard receiver in the PRIME of his career for another William Gay. Disgusting.

  30. The Jets are trying really hard to step out of the Giants shadow. Apparently the Jets are the new Cowboys.

  31. Does this mean under the “Final Eight Plan” they have filled their one open spot and can no longer sing Jason Taylor?
At least Holmes and Edwards can team up and throw their fruity drinks on Lebron’s friends.

  32. If the Rooney’s really ran a tight ship and the Steelers were morally superior to any other team in the league, they would get rid of big ben. as long as he is on the team they CANNOT claim that.

  33. There is a lot to be proud of if you are a Steeler fan. But the difference in how management has handled the two cases of Holmes and Big Ben reeks of hypocrisy and casts a long shadow on an otherwise pretty good franchise.

  34. the jets are heading in the right direction a fifth round pick was a steal but he could be a future headache either way hes well worth the gamble especially for a fifth round pick. the steelers must have been really sick of his bullsh*t to trade him for such a low pick.

  35. Tannenbaum is playing real life madden!!!
he is getting all the players who have ratings of 90 and up.
    this is sick!!!

  36. Wow a 5th round pick is a pretty decent deal for the Jets. Hopefully Rex can control all these new egos (cromartie, LT, santonio).

  37. Wow…
Santonio’s amazing catch at the most clutch moment won a Superbowl for the Organization.
Now, the ship him out of town following a totally frivolous allegation from some woman taking advantage of his celebrity in hopes of extorting a cash settlement, and a twitter posting about smoking marijuana in the offseason.
Florio, do you realize that calling attention to the Twitter post could have had something to do with this? Let’s face it, all NBA execs stop by this website, and it could have even prompted a surprise visit for a urine sample leading to the alleged suspension.
    Talk about being a scapegoat.
There is no comparison between Ben Rothlesberger’s multiple sexual assualt allegations, the latest following a sexual encounter in a dingy bathroom and this lame accusation set forth by Holmes’ accuser. No comparison.
Jets just got a CLUTCH receiver, who has none of the catching issues that plagued Edwards, for a super discount price.

  38. Time for Mike Wallace to step up. He came on strong at the end of the Season. This trade still has me scratching my head though. WR just moved up the Draft Boards in Pittsburgh. We can’t count on Limas Peed to develop.

  39. I guess this is suppose to make it look like they have high character players.
Oh wait, they just get rid of substance abusers…not female abusers.
The rooney’s are showing its ok to abuse women it pittsburgh, but if all your doing is abusing substances then its out the door. They cant have those low character people, just the high moral ones

not that he’s been convicted, but i REALLY doubt the rooney’s would ship big ben if he’s found guilty

  41. Despite being a complete dumbass off the field, the Steelers got utility out of the guy on numerous occasions. For his sake, hopefully he cleans up his act, steers clear of further situations where he gets negative attention, and quits acting like an entitled piece of garbage when addressing fans. Stat-wise, he had a solid year last year, so we’ll see what happens in NY. A fifth-round pick seems like a weak return, though.
On a side note, here’s what it says on Wikipedia regarding Holmes:
    New York Jets
“On April 11, 2010, Holmes was traded to the New York Jets in exchange for a MMMMAAAAAARRRRRRKKKKK SSSSSAAAAANNNNNNCCCCHHHHHEEEEEZZZZ.[7]”

  42. Where’s all those people that said the Steelers don’t get rid of stars/starters?? I think this proves they do.

  43. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ROFLMAO!! A 5th round pick for a former SB MVP?!?! That’s just plain stupid! The Steelers are falling apart at the seams – easily the dumbest trade of the offseason – if your “the Burgh”. The Jets are loadin’ up – that move just put them in the top 2 in the AFC…If they got rid of Holmes for weed & “allegedly throwing a glass”, it’s going to be interesting to see what they do with their fat-ass QB…

  44. It’s no so easy to just go “he’s gone, oh now we can all say he sucks.”
I’m torn. Holmes is a money receiver who steps up in big games, and might be the best YAC guy in the game.
On the other hand, he could be following Burress into jail. Think he’s been bad in the ‘burgh? Wait’ll he gets hooked into the NY night scene.
Even with his bad antics, a 5th-rounder is way too low.

  45. # wan8iv says: April 11, 2010 11:28 PM
We’ll see how serious Steelers are if they do something w/ Big Ben too.
    ********************************************
I’m assuming you’re not referring to anything more than a suspension and/or fine. I can’t see anything more happening, at least without a conviction. Solid receivers come and go, and the Steelers have depth in that position. QBs are a different story, especially given that the draft stock this year isn’t exactly stellar and the free agent market is weak.

  46. As a die-hard dolphin fan…well u can imagine what i said when I saw this headline. It went something along the lines of “U lucky Sunz of Bi-atches.”

  47. Props to the Rooneys.
Santonio was never much of a human being to begin with. Then the fame hit. Santonio roaming around the city of New York trying to keep himself entertained? Wow. Talk about potential for a mess.
But you know what, if the Jets really think that they have the leadership to keep a man-child like Santonio under control, and they can pull it off, then they deserve props. But thats a big if.

  48. A 5th rounder though??? Thats all they could get? Plus, the Steelers have only set themselves up for the hypocrisy label if they dont ship out Ben!! Meanwhile, the Jets are becoming crazy scary…

  49. The Steelers traded their SB MVP for a 5th round pick?
Oh, yeah- The Rooneys are geniuses… in Bizarroworld.

  50. Wow what a steal. Ill take him he has been accused but only convicted of a Marijuana charge all other charges have been dropped and he didnt throw the glass at the woman. People can make accusations all day but when it comes down to it convictions are what matter. Santonio we welcome to the 2010-2011 Super Bowl Champion New York Jets!

  51. Aww sorry Florio I can just hear the tears flowing through your writing.
The Steelers are getting worse and its tearing you up. Looks like the 2010-2011 playoffs will be Steelers free. For the 2nd year in a row.

  52. The jets are the nfls home to overrated crybabies and wanna be thugs. Sounds like the exact personality of the coach.

  53. Look, I think that the Steelers run a great organization, but to think that sending Santonio Holmes to the Jets is verification of their moral character is not being entirely true.
The Rooneys are keeping someone on the roster who has been accused twice of sexual assault. All this move tells me is that they don’t have the moxy to tell Ben to watch out. Now I am not even certain that Roethlisberger will miss any time because of his off the field controversies. The Steelers are generally class and they seem to know when to let go of a player because of problems, but to let go of a receiver of a charge that hasn’t even been through the courts is crazy. To keep a QB, without disciplining him for his actions, who has been through 2 sexual assualt accusations is crazy.
Perhaps the once might franchise is starting to show some cracks.

  54. I predict 12 more articles on this tomorrow at a minimum and a “Trade opens the door for Brandan Marshall to the Steelers?” type post

  55. Too bad Santonio. You messed with the Rooney’s a bit too much.
Next up – draft Tim Tebow? LOL
Message to all you haters: 2 toes down inside the line, 6 Lombardi’s. Scoreboard suckers. Thanks for the memories Mr. Holmes!!!!

  56. If the jets lineup on offense left to right.. Braylon Edwards, Jericho Cothery, Dustin Keller Santonio Holmes with LT in the backfield. How do you stop them on passing downs? You can not play man to man

  57. Their best receiver may be Mike Wallace anyway. He smoked us (Bengals). Maybe he was a surprise but he is a burner.
I would have thought they could’ve done better than a 5th rounder though.

  58. The Steelers will give a player a chance or two, but when a player continues to screw up and then turns around and is unappreciative of the team getting him out of trouble and shows disrespect then he is out.
Be careful of what you wish for.
Santonio will be out of the league and/or a nonfactor in two years.
Ben is next if he don’t straighten up.
    wake and bake on that.

  59. So . . . if I told you that you could draft a receiver in the 5th round and in the 5th game of the season, he would be the best receiver on your team, would you draft the guy? This seems like a no-brainer to me, it’s absolutely worth the 5th round pick, even if Holmes only plays 12 more games ever, they are likely to be more productive than anything you could reasonably expect from a 5th rd. pick.

  60. jramler
Amen Buddy! GET RID OF BEN ROETHLISBERGER. I hope he goes to the Raiders but he won’t. LOL The Rooneys are still in the poop house because they will do NOTHING to Ben. Maybe he’ll get a couple more concussions and the docs will yank him like they did on Aikman and Young. He doe LOVE to be sacked.

  61. As a Dolphins fan, I watched Ricky shape up. Who is to say this guy shapes up in a Jets uniform. Well as we sit around and just think of how nice it would be to have receivers that can catch the ball Jets are actually doing something about it. Dolphins return to the laughing stock of the AFC East yet another year! Well at least we still have JLO! Kiss my ass Ross. This is the NFL, not Hollywood.

  62. My bad, silly me depending on ESPN’s draft coverage, checked CBS and see the %th rounder from Philly.

  63. The Steelers are stupid for this trade. Of course they have the most super bowls in NFL history but thats besides the point. You just don’t give up a Super Bowl MVP for a 5th rounder.
Maybe if it was Larry Brown from the Cowboys, Dexter Jackson from the Bucs, or Hell even Deion Branch (all former SB MVPS)
I love the Rooney Family but I’m sorry, they will be laughed at for a long time for this trade.

  64. Nice mouth jets474, you toss your step-dads salad with that? 2 minutes earlier and you’d be a genuis.

  65. Ben needs to go TODAY! But Oh NO… the Rooneys don’t have the GUTS to do that… OH NO! Hypocrites!! Don’t think for one second they don’t know it either! Maybe the fans will throw beer bottles at #7 when he tries to take the field. Maybe then they will all get the message.

  66. Can’t stay off the weed, I guess.
He had already said he was getting traded on draft day; guess they decided not to wait.
Good move to get something for him now instead of just waiting till his contract was up at the end of the season. He wanted to play for a big market and get paid in his next contract what HE feels he’s worth.
And the 4-game suspension has nothing to do with the Florida incident; it’s got to be for the drug test he failed (or missed) and probably for the twitter as well.

  67. Where are the allegations for the NY Jets raping Pitt in this trade? A 5th rounder, seriously?

  68. rapelisburger had his way with him in the shower and they shipped him to NY to brush ANOTHER ONE under the carpet, thats my guess…. and IF big ben stays around this year the Pittsburgh Steelers are the BIGGEST piece of Sh!t franchise in the NFL for playing with two sets of rules.
No Holmes = No Amazing Catch= No 2nd ring for Ben= no Insurance Policy for his offseason Rapings.
I wonder if Ben would have twittered his rape if he would get shipped too….

  69. This was a bad mistake. People get so caught up in image but that doesn’t win championships. Ask the Eagles and all those other self righteous teams without anything. Pittsburgh got nothing for him and don’t have anyone who can do what Santonio did. A 5th round draft pick??? Congrats Jets you have a quality, proven number #1 receiver and Pittsburgh got their image. LOL!!

  70. You can’t say the Rooney’s are running a tight ship.Or Ben would have been gone after the first sexual misconduct charge. We will prevail…………….I hope

  71. The comments Im reading here have given me a good laugh at the very least. Here are a few facts you biased and unrealistic fans may want to consider…….
    1. For those who think he wont be able to handle to temptations in NY. First off , the Jets are in jersey and second: Santonio is a MILLIONAIRE ATHLETE ,not an armchair qb like yourselves – if he wanted to go to NY he could at any time. The incident with the ‘glass happened in orlando fla, and if you can read twitter to see when he smokes you can also see these guys fly all over the country.
    2. Rnady Moss admitted to smoking pot AFTER he became a pat – didnt see him shipped out did you? Truth may hurt – but alot of these guys smoke pot.
    3. Pitt just dumped a SB MVP for a pot charge that hasnt gone to court and because his friend threw a drink on a woman but theyre keeping their high profile WHITE qb who keeps getting accused of sexually assaulting women ( is this the REAL Rooney rule?)
    AFC fans there is a new 4 letter word – its spelled J – E – T – S!!!!

  72. ItalianArmyGuy,
SO, your logic is that if a football team has 6 trophies then the players walk on water and are above the law? I don’t think so. Good on the trophies, bad as human beings… meaning Santonio AND Pig Ben.

  73. People need to have some intelligence before they comment. This isn’t an issue of race or punishing one over the other. The fact is Ben has 6 years on his deal. He sign a 8 years, $102 million contract before the 2008 season. This was before any allegations against him. He is averaging $12.75 million a year. Plus, he was guaranteed $36 million. Holmes is on the last year of his rookie deal. Translation: there are 2 headaches; however, one is cheap to get rid of, and the other is extremely expensive. If the Steelers cut or trade Ben, they will have paid somewhere between $50-$60 million for 2 years. That is a lot to swallow. The Rooneys are not one of these billionaire owners. Add to this, it is rumored Holmes has failed a drug test and will be facing a 4 game suspension. Also, while Ben has been charged criminally 0 times (yes people remember that), Holmes has had criminal charges against him 3 times since the he was drafted (and now maybe 4 although unlikely). Domestic violence, disorderly conduct, and possession of marijuana (the week of a regular season game). He paid a fine on the disorderly, and charges were dropped in the domestic violence because his girlfriend refused to press charges and the possession charge was dropped for an illegal search. He has been in trouble with the law many times. Also, add his Twitter comments after the incident, his possible impending drug suspension, and the fact that it is believed Holmes wants to leave next year anyway to play in a big market in order to be a star. And Ben once again has 0 criminal charges, o means never been charged. The lady in Tahoe has been proven pretty unreliable, but regardless, it is a civil trial, which means not criminal and no jail. So quit saying that race was any factor or the Steelers made him the scapegoat. He was the only 1 of the 2 who was plausible to get rid of. Plus, whether or not Ben is white, black, blue, or yellow, a franchise QB will get a much longer leash. People need to stop inject race into every situation, especially ones where it is not a factor. The Steelers put up with trouble from Ernie Holmes in the 70’s and he was black. The only reason they cut him is he got too fat. The put up with James Harrsion, who made a one time mistake and hasn’t had any trouble before or since, and he was black. The minority hiring rule is named after Dan Rooney. Race played absolutely no issue in this decision. If there was any other factor, it was money.

  74. Santonio Holmes for a 5th round pick? Even with the suspension and baggage, what a steal!

  75. Wow. I’m no fan of his knucklehead behavior but trading him for a 5th round pick? If every team got rid of every player that smoked pot there’d be noone left. Meanwhile the Bengals, Browns and Cowboys sign every criminal out there. Trade your #1 receiver for a 5th round pick. Nice job Pittsburgh. At least when we finish 3rd in the division this year I can tell people I root for the team with the most integrity in the league.
    Ridiculous.

    =============
Reba – actually, I’ve been of the same mind as you all along – you should read more of my words. Go away Santonio and Ben – my Steelers can clearly go 9-7 without you. Besides, I want Tim Tebow anyway.

  77. Smokey Holmes for a 5th Round Pick, what does that say about the Steeler organization? Considering all the facts: his previous run-ins with the law, his current contract and his expected increase in salary next year, in addition to no salary cap, he may have left anyway with the Steelers getting nothing in return. I believe that have not Ben Rapelisberger been given such a huge contract his monkey behind would be on the next thing smokin (no pun intended) out of The Burgh. Something else to consider in this trade; are the Steelers privy what the Georgia District Attorney is going to announce later today (14:00 hours)? We cannot compare what Ernie Holmes went through to what Ben and Smokey are experiencing. Ernie had mental issues not an ego problem. Ben is like the Walenda’s walking the thin tightrope; he better not slip.

  78. Maybe 5th-round pick is also a message = You’re not worth much/That’s how you Not be great.

    *********************************************
Not really falling apart at the seams, jerkoff. The Steelers can afford to part ways with Holmes – they have a solid receiving core and have a history of digging up receiving talent. “NY” (why are we putting quotes around city nicknames again?) will enjoy Holmes and all the legal baggage that he will tote around the remainder of his career. The Jets did get a steal on this one, but it’s quite likely that it won’t be a great long-term investment.
Also, there’s no hypocrisy in not moving Ben at this point. As I note above: “QBs are a different story, especially given that the draft stock this year isn’t exactly stellar and the free agent market is weak.” There are no obvious better options on the market; from a staffing perspective, therefore, there is no obvious move to make. What would you do?
By the way – It’s not 1994, dumbass. Quit saying ROFLMAO.

  80. “You can’t say the Rooney’s are running a tight ship.Or Ben would have been gone after the first sexual misconduct charge”
Charged? He has never been charged of anything.

  81. @laststarfighter
I think you have that backwards…
    Jets=smart
    Steelers=dumb
    easy math

  82. Im a Steeler fan and this was a dumb trade… Tone was. one of my favorite recievers and i will miss him…. We could have atleast get a 2nd round pick for him… I guess now Mike Wallance is going to have to step up… We are probally going to get a reciever in the draft 😦

  83. “People need to have some intelligence before they comment. This isn’t an issue of race or punishing one over the other. The fact is Ben has 6 years on his deal. I couldn’t have said it better myself…

  84. This does NOT take the spot on the roster that Jason Taylor can fill. The final eight rules apply to free agency. A player who is cut can be signed and any trade can take place without any restrictions by the final eight rule. The Jets can still sign a player for $1.5 mil this season and 1.95 next season.

  85. wow a 5th rounder??? thats it?? i thought the steelers knew what they were doin over there? they just got robbed!

  86. Word has it out of the Burgh (Insider Info) was that Holmes was not a good teammate and his surly attitude won’t be missed. Apparently, he thought very highly of himself and rubbed most, if not all of his former teammates the wrong way. Plus, he has a way of finding trouble.
Santonio + New York = DIsaster.
Maybe a 5’th round pick was a steal for the Steelers. After all, we’re talking about the premiere franchise in the NFL, versus one who just can’t seem to get out of their own way in the Jest.
Good luck with that J-E-S-T……you’ll need it.

“Who’s going to take the stupidity spotlight off Ben the next time he rapes someone?”
That’s not necessary. You seem to be doing a pretty good job all by yourself.

  88. If I’m a Jets fan, I don’t think I like the direction this team is going. On paper it looks great, but you think Edwards and Holmes together on a team that loves to run the ball are going to just be happy go lucky that they only get a few balls a game, if that?

“Now, ship Ben to the Raiders…”
Which isn’t due to any moral indignation on your part, it’s just that your team plays in the same division, right?

Meanwhile Ben is staying put after raping women.
    ————————————————–
some of you people that A)just hate the steelers
    B) know our qb is better than any in the afc north and hope we trade him just to give you any chance
    c) are 5 years old and dont know the meaning of the words proof and rape
Just need to get lost. Every post, rape, rape rape! you can say it 50000000000000 more times, but until their is PROOF, you look stupid. as of now, he is guily of having consensual sex with 2 adults PERIOD! if rape occured, then like 98.9% other rape cases, charges would have been filed in a criminal court. He rapes 2 woman and NEITHER want to press criminal charges? As of 2pm today, all you fears will be back.

“But this leads me to ask, will they ever get rid of Big Ben??
Two sexual assault allegations> one drink in face/ pot bust…..”
Did you even read what you wrote??
    “allegations > bust”
    Idiot.

  92. There’s no comparison between Roethlisburger’s situation and Holmes’ situation. Roethlisburger is white and is the face of the franchise. There’s no fanbase more racist than the Steelers except maybe the Bengals. The Steelers fanbase will accept black players who perform, but they’ll never accept a player as the face of the franchise unless he’s white. Remember how they crucified Kordell Stewart.

    “Lowlife trash: Pittsburgh’s #1 export.”
    Exactly.
Proven problem children are shipped out ASAP.
    And where do they go?
    To your team.
    So STFU.

  94. I head Polamalu has gotten drunk a few times . . . we’ll send you a 3rd (Jets) . . . wanna swap?

  95. The Jets are quietly assembling a death squad. Now jericho is the number 3 reciever? Its a done deal as far as the AFC east is concerned, I’d say forget j.Taylor and spend up that 1st rounder on a premium pass rusher pick up a good valued safety, and fortify the O and D lines in the draft. The best Run game and D on the planet with one of the sickest reciever corps the jets ever had. Sanchize is gonna spread the field like butter and they still have the ground and pound. Ocho cincos right, it isnt fair!

  96. @ Matt posted 6:29am –
Hey douchebag what WR do you have that allowed you to trade your only playmaker on offense? Whines Ward isn’t getting any younger, Mike Wallace sucks, Sweed sucks, you just signed washed-up Randle-El – sorry, but that WR corp is scaring anybody, not to mrntion your QB weighs north of 300 lbs., you got no line, no RB, and now you have to draft a WR instead of O-line help – you guys converting Pig Ben to Gaurd? By the way, “ROFLMAO” didn’t come about until texting started dipshit, which was a lot later than 94′ – you need to get your facts straight and your head out of your Steeler Ass…

  97. Can’t say I’m not suprised. Thanks for the memories (AND THE RING) Santonio, but you messed w/ the wrong orginization w/ your off field shenanigans.. NYC is a perfect place for you to be an idiot, the fans up there assume that their players will be carrying around guns in clubs and smokin pot. The rumor still floating around is that we’re going to get Leon Washington too, so that’s gonna be a SEXY add to an already stellar team. As per usual…

  98. Wow…a 5th?
I see a lot of attitudes have changed about Santonio. Mostly Jets fans. Last week he was a thug, pothead, woman beater that should be suspended from the league. Today he’s a talented, former SB MVP that the Jets got for a pittance.
I’m gonna miss Smoketonio, grats Jets.

  99. Crazy deal. I’ve always liked Holmes as a receiver but I think he’s a diva-type in the making. He’s never been all that great but he always seemed to get open when it was necessary.
Good luck with that guy, Rex! I’m beginning to think you’re biting off more than you can chew with these deals though.

  100. Since Ryan took over, has any Jets player been involved in any controversy besides trash-talking ?

  101. Jets are banking on Rex’s ability to motivate guys with character issues combined with doing it publicly on Hard Knocks so that other owners/coaches and the public will see it start to happen with their own eyes.
That could speed up the process for Cromartie, Holmes, Braylon Edwards… but if Rex can’t do it, and Sanchez can’t handle it, it will blow up in their faces.
Don’t forget they’re also only gonna have all these guys THIS year..the year where they’re selling seat licenses that haven’t sold out.
No matter what, it’s an risky investment to win now, and to get fans to come watch… definitely are best team to put on for Hard Knocks to see how it starts to develop…

  102. Oh I am really late to this party.
Well, I’m cut from the Rooney mold: I’m not going to sob over losing someone who only touches the ball a few times a game–especially not when he’s caused as much trouble as Santonio has in four years. I had more patience with the guy who shot himself literally than the one who did it with Twitter.
My only complaint is that we didn’t get more for him. Some teams value wideouts much more than I do. We should at least have gotten a second-round pick. Crap!

  103. As a HUGE Steelers Fan, I am not happy about the 5th round pick either but the organization has a pretty good track record in removing problem players before they self-destruct (i.e. Burress)
Ben did nothing illegal or wrong – the alleged victim didn’t even want to press charges or pursue the matter and he has been cleared of any criminal activity.
    GO STEELERS!

  104. This Jets team will be one of the most doimnant teams assembled in the last 10 years…………… IN MADDEN.

  105. they ship the pot smoker, but keep the rapist. i personally don’t have a problem with people who smoke pot, medical or recreation, i do how ever think rapist should be castrated. even if they play quarterback

  106. # fmax4 says: April 11, 2010 11:48 PM
So, they get rid of Holmes for his conduct. Is this a prelude for #7 to be shipped to Seattle, Cleveland(why not?#5 went in the same division), Carolina, Buffalo. Seems to me that you cant get rid of one without the other.
    I’m jus sayin……

I haven’t a clue WTF this guy is sayin… can someone transcribe this sh!t
    HAIL SKINS!

  107. The deal is about a lot more than the recent suspension.
Before he even suited up for the Steelers, Holmes was accused of assaulting a former girlfriend. The charge was later dropped.
Then he was caught with the pot in his car. That charge was also dropped.
Then this year he had the bar blowup. Followed by the Twitter blowup (2 actually – telling a fan they should kill themselves and his ‘wake n bake’ comment).
What’s amazing about the ‘wake n bake’ tweet is that he must have already known he was facing a 4-game suspension. How dumb can you be?
He’s also a UFA at the end of the year, so he’s essentially a 12-game rental (if he manages to stay clean for a whole season…).
