The deal is about a lot more than the recent suspension.
Before he even suited up for the Steelers, Holmes was accused of assaulting a former girlfriend. The charge was later dropped.
Then he was caught with the pot in his car. That charge was also dropped.
Then this year he had the bar blowup. Followed by the Twitter blowup (2 actually – telling a fan they should kill themselves and his ‘wake n bake’ comment).
What’s amazing about the ‘wake n bake’ tweet is that he must have already known he was facing a 4-game suspension. How dumb can you be?
He’s also a UFA at the end of the year, so he’s essentially a 12-game rental (if he manages to stay clean for a whole season…).

As a HUGE Steelers Fan, I am not happy about the 5th round pick either but the organization has a pretty good track record in removing problem players before they self-destruct (i.e. Burress)
Ben did nothing illegal or wrong – the alleged victim didn’t even want to press charges or pursue the matter and he has been cleared of any criminal activity.

Oh I am really late to this party.
Well, I’m cut from the Rooney mold: I’m not going to sob over losing someone who only touches the ball a few times a game–especially not when he’s caused as much trouble as Santonio has in four years. I had more patience with the guy who shot himself literally than the one who did it with Twitter.
My only complaint is that we didn’t get more for him. Some teams value wideouts much more than I do. We should at least have gotten a second-round pick. Crap!

Jets are banking on Rex’s ability to motivate guys with character issues combined with doing it publicly on Hard Knocks so that other owners/coaches and the public will see it start to happen with their own eyes.
That could speed up the process for Cromartie, Holmes, Braylon Edwards… but if Rex can’t do it, and Sanchez can’t handle it, it will blow up in their faces.
Don’t forget they’re also only gonna have all these guys THIS year..the year where they’re selling seat licenses that haven’t sold out.
No matter what, it’s an risky investment to win now, and to get fans to come watch… definitely are best team to put on for Hard Knocks to see how it starts to develop…

Crazy deal. I’ve always liked Holmes as a receiver but I think he’s a diva-type in the making. He’s never been all that great but he always seemed to get open when it was necessary.
Good luck with that guy, Rex! I’m beginning to think you’re biting off more than you can chew with these deals though.

I see a lot of attitudes have changed about Santonio. Mostly Jets fans. Last week he was a thug, pothead, woman beater that should be suspended from the league. Today he’s a talented, former SB MVP that the Jets got for a pittance.
I’m gonna miss Smoketonio, grats Jets.

The Jets are quietly assembling a death squad. Now jericho is the number 3 reciever? Its a done deal as far as the AFC east is concerned, I’d say forget j.Taylor and spend up that 1st rounder on a premium pass rusher pick up a good valued safety, and fortify the O and D lines in the draft. The best Run game and D on the planet with one of the sickest reciever corps the jets ever had. Sanchize is gonna spread the field like butter and they still have the ground and pound. There’s no comparison between Roethlisburger’s situation and Holmes’ situation. Roethlisburger is white and is the face of the franchise. There’s no fanbase more racist than the Steelers except maybe the Bengals. The Steelers fanbase will accept black players who perform, but they’ll never accept a player as the face of the franchise unless he’s white. Remember how they crucified Kordell Stewart.

Word has it out of the Burgh (Insider Info) was that Holmes was not a good teammate and his surly attitude won’t be missed. Apparently, he thought very highly of himself and rubbed most, if not all of his former teammates the wrong way. Plus, he has a way of finding trouble.
Santonio + New York = DIsaster.
Maybe a 5′th round pick was a steal for the Steelers. After all, we’re talking about the premiere franchise in the NFL, versus one who just can’t seem to get out of their own way in the Jest.

This does NOT take the spot on the roster that Jason Taylor can fill. The final eight rules apply to free agency. A player who is cut can be signed and any trade can take place without any restrictions by the final eight rule. The Jets can still sign a player for $1.5 mil this season and 1.95 next season.

“People need to have some intelligence before they comment. This isn’t an issue of race or punishing one over the other. The fact is Ben has 6 years on his deal. He sign a 8 years, $102 million contract before the 2008 season. This was before any allegations against him. He is averaging $12.75 million a year. Plus, he was guaranteed $36 million. Holmes is on the last year of his rookie deal. Translation: there are 2 headaches; however, one is cheap to get rid of, and the other is extremely expensive. If the Steelers cut or trade Ben, they will have paid somewhere between $50-$60 million for 2 years. That is a lot to swallow. The Rooneys are not one of these billionaire owners. Add to this, it is rumored Holmes has failed a drug test and will be facing a 4 game suspension. Also, while Ben has been charged criminally 0 times (yes people remember that), Holmes has had criminal charges against him 3 times since the he was drafted (and now maybe 4 although unlikely). Domestic violence, disorderly conduct, and possession of marijuana (the week of a regular season game). He paid a fine on the disorderly, and charges were dropped in the domestic violence because his girlfriend refused to press charges and the possession charge was dropped for an illegal search. He has been in trouble with the law many times. Also, add his Twitter comments after the incident, his possible impending drug suspension, and the fact that it is believed Holmes wants to leave next year anyway to play in a big market in order to be a star. And Ben once again has 0 criminal charges, o means never been charged. The lady in Tahoe has been proven pretty unreliable, but regardless, it is a civil trial, which means not criminal and no jail. So quit saying that race was any factor or the Steelers made him the scapegoat. He was the only 1 of the 2 who was plausible to get rid of. Plus, whether or not Ben is white, black, blue, or yellow, a franchise QB will get a much longer leash. People need to stop inject race into every situation, especially ones where it is not a factor. The Steelers put up with trouble from Ernie Holmes in the 70′s and he was black. The only reason they cut him is he got too fat. The put up with James Harrsion, who made a one time mistake and hasn’t had any trouble before or since, and he was black. The minority hiring rule is named after Dan Rooney. Race played absolutely no issue in this decision. If there was any other factor, it was money.”

Im a Steeler fan and this was a dumb trade… Tone was. one of my favorite recievers and i will miss him…. We could have atleast get a 2nd round pick for him… I guess now Mike Wallance is going to have to step up… We are probally going to get a reciever in the draft
