Yesterday PFT’s Gregg Rosenthal noted that wide receiver Laveranues Coles is among a number of big names still available in free agency. And we’ve previously mentioned the possibility of Coles returning to the Jets.
But the Jets’ acquisition of former Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes apparently means Coles will have to look elsewhere for employment in 2010.
Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets have all but eliminated the possibility of signing Coles.
Coles was released by the Bengals prior to the start of free agency and is still an unrestricted free agent. In 2009 in Cincinnati he caught 43 passes for 514 yards, his lowest totals since his rookie year.
The Jets cut Coles last year after he agreed to give up $6 million guaranteed in exchange for having the final year of his contract voided. Coles was drafted by the Jets in 2000, signed with the Redskins in 2003 and was traded back to the Jets in 2005 before leaving in 2009.

Laveranues Coles for Congress!
Giving away money now for less in the future–he would fit right in.
The Jets have enough wide receivers..
They need to focus on the Draft and this point and helping Braylon Edwards work on catching the ball.
I guess not. The Jets just got lightning in a bottle in Santonio Holmes.
Roethlsiberger could/can not lead a receiver on a deep ball or hit a receiver in stride to save his soul but I always said that if Holmes had a QB that had skills beyond street ball “just go out and run around until you get wide open” Holmes would be in the Pro Bowl every year.
I don’t know if Sanchez has can those skills but if he does those five yard slants turn into 25 yard gains with Holmes.

Who was paging Captain Obvious?
I thought the Jets were a run-first team, why would they need more WRs all of a sudden ?
so wait…. The jets traded for Santonio Holmes?
they should sign him. between him and edwards they can’t catch a cold.
Jacksonville needs him
He’ll still lead the league in fingerbangs. Hear that, Big Ben?
Holmes is history…just a matter of time before he twists one up, thinking he can outsmart the long arm of the NFL office. Too bad hes such a knucklehead. Hes really talented.
I hear New England needs a receiver……or 2…..or 3….
