Fred Bright says Big Ben should "grow up"

Earlier today, Ocmulgee (Ga.) Judicial Circuit District Attorney Fred Bright announced that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger won’t be charged with sexual assault.

Our friends at NBC have passed along some video of Bright taking questions.

For those of you who haven’t seen it, here it is.  For those of you who have, consider this story to be space filler.  (A concept that applies to half of the stuff I write.)

  1. 15 minutes of fame for Fred Bright. Whole lot of unnecessary comments from him.
Although, he is correct. Ben, Grow Up!

  2. “Fred Bright says Big Ben should “grow up””
Same goes for Shittsburgh fans who swear to Ben’s innocence

  3. Wow, can you say attention hog? I have never in my life seen a DA babble on about things they have no business saying…WOW at least we know WHY he put all the drama into this.

  4. I especially like the part where, when asked what he thought of this column he replied: “Florio?? That gutless [bleep], he’s a [bleep]ing [bleep]hole!”

  5. That was the most obvious statement anyone could have made.
Ham— I think I am commented on everyone so far and he hasn’t changed his mind!

  6. Florio:
Do the words ‘I’ or ‘Me’ have to be in everything you put on this site?
Newsflash; the world does NOT revolve around you.
    Friggin idiot.

  7. Anytime anyone is telling somebody else how to live their life you can bet dollars to doughnuts they have something effed up going on themselves. It was out of line for Bright to make that comment.

  8. Gee well thanks for your opinion Mr. Bright. Now you can go back to your desk in your back woods hick Georgia town and fade right back into obscurity. Your 15 minutes of fame have expired.

  9. If ESPN and the NFL Network weren’t idiots, we all would have seen it. Thanks to the online outlets that showed it live.
DA Bright’s comments were excellent. This is stuff the Steelers should have said long ago. I hope the Steelers say it now with a force that finally makes him HEAR it.
Incidentally, this isn’t the kind of statement a prosecutor usually makes when he thinks a sex abuser has gotten away for lack of evidence. It’s pretty clear from this and his other statements–particularly his closing comment “I prosecute crime, not sin”–that he thinks this was a lot of people acting like idiots, not criminals.

  10. Since the Georgia is throwing around advice, maybe he should tell 20 year old college students that they are too young to legally drink in the state of Georgia and that following celebrities into bathrooms is not very “grown up”.

  11. Kudos to the Steelers. They knew Roethlisberger was not guilty but they are tired of his immaturity. They will straighten him up. Of course the girl did not want to press charges after all, look at her sorority sisters taking Ben’s side. She was embarrassed but that was about it. You could tell from the DA that he knew Ben didn’t do anything other than act 20 instead of 30.
And then the Steelers dump the ongoing problem child Mary Jane, oops, Santonio Holmes.
Once again, they show why they rank at the very top in all sports organizations.
    Hats off to the Steelers.

  12. This should be the message the NFL should use for the entire league as 1/3rd of the league should grow up. I think all pro sports are getting bad and need to clean up their riff raff as you are making big bucks and kids are looking up to these athletes.

  13. Fred Bright declines to press criminal charges, but sentences Roethlisberger to anywhere from several months to several years of infamy and ridicule.
    Case closed.

  14. Add to previous: It’s a punk cowardly move by Fred Bright.
Either charge Roethlisberger or don’t but if you don’t have the stones to charge him then don’t stand there and try to lecture him like a tough guy.

  15. Yep, He needs to stop acting like a Frat boy of spring break in Tijuana during the off season.

  16. Looks like Fred Bright was looking for his own 15 minutes of fame (or 2 minutes and 7 seconds). Was all of that really necessary in order to say, “No charges are being filed.”?

  17. Bens name is MUD! I’m sure this punk wouldn’t like it if someone did what he did to his own sister.

  18. Florio, you owe Ben an apology. The DA is saying the girl is full of BS and Ben is nothing more than a big dumb oaf. It amazing how PFT is the TMZ of sports now.

  19. Oh, I get it–self-deprecation.
Not all that different from your usual self-defecation.

  20. Once Ben grows up he’ll realize he needs professional help.I’m sure there’s quite a few professionals willing to work with him and bend over backwards for him.

  21. “For those of you who have, consider this story to be space filler. (A concept that applies to half of the stuff I write.)”
Your kind of generous there with HALF of the stuff you write!!!!!!!!! I was thinking more like 95% of what you write as space filler…

  22. Fred Bright knows Ben is guilty but with out the victim testifying he can not prove it in court. Another athlete walks free.

  23. Oh.
He only “KIND OF RAPED” her.
Yep…that’s better. Don’t you think so, Mr. Rooney?

  24. I like this guy. He’s pretty funny, and the Pittsburg Steelers couldn’t have a better role model at QB.

  25. Fred Bright knows Ben is guilty but with out the victim testifying he can not prove it in court. Another athlete walks free.

  26. what the Steelers paid Bright is how justice is dispensed in small town America.
Just like a spoiled child Ben Roethlisberger will keep doing the same thing over and over untill he is punished for his actions

  27. Do you really need multiple posts from that single presser, Florio? You could’ve covered it all in one post.
So sorry to the Steelers haters that the facts didn’t stack up in your favor. According to the DA, the girl admitted to sex. According to the DA, the girl told police she was NOT raped. According to the DA, there is no evidence to support a criminal case. According to the DA, his job is to prosecute actual crimes, not morals. I know you all wish she actually HAD been raped just you can talk a little internet smack from safely behind your computers. Again, so sorry the FACTS didn’t stack up in your favor. So tell me….how would you all like your crow served this evening?

  28. Seems like many posters think this DA overstepped his bounds, but it sounds to me as if he’s mad. He’s mad he can’t charge Ben and he knows he’s guilty.
Advice Ben, if you can’t change your ways then get pros. You have to have figured out by now that you’re going to have a HUGE bullseye on your back. Shell out some of that NFL money and get a few pros to party with. They will keep their mouths shut and they most likely not sue you for doing what they already let you pay them to do. I’m just saying…..

  29. @Calihawk …
Yeah, you can tell that by Bright’s demeanor. When DA’s have to let sex offenders go for lack of evidence, they usually say: Grow up and act like a leader. Then later in the same press conference they tell them that if they’ll keep their noses clean, they’re welcome back in his town anytime.
Uh-huh. Fred knows Ben is guilty all right. You sure are a shrewd one for reading between the lines.

  30. I’m a lifelong Steeler fan but I’ll try to be as objective as I can. If Ben forced himself on this girl there is no excuse and he should be punished. having said that, it’s far from clear what actually happened. If Ben simply hooked up with a drunk college chick in a bathroom and somehow pissed her off by being rude during or after the fact than he’s guilty of nothing other than being a jerk. Ben’s only 28 and I doubt he IDed this girl who was in a bar drinking. She was drunk and followed him from bar to bar from all accounts. It sounds like Ben did little different than most single guys would do in a bar amongst drunk girls. I seriously doubt he forced himself on this girl when he’s out with off duty cops. It makes no sense. I’m betting he angered this girl by hooking up with her then brushing her off in rude fashion. I really don’t think that deserves a suspension of any kind. he does need to grow up a bit but let’s keep this all in perspective. he didn’t stab anyone to death or kill somebody while driving drunk.(apologies to Ray lewis, Dante Stallworth, and Leonard Little-all still playing)

  31. Funny how all the Steelers fans keep trying to put the focus on the girl… as if being underage in a bar is an excuse to be raped.
“She was asking for it”, right “Benablers”?

  32. Wow you people are stupid he wasn’t charged why not bash the women that said he raped her which he didn’t.
This young lady kept changing her story to wrong’s don’t make a right this lady should be held accountable.
P.S. Whoever says he guilty needs to shut up !.

  33. Why are people slamming on Bright he just saying what the rest of the world thinks. Ben Roethlisberger superbowl winning QB shouldn’t be hanging out in dingy college bars trying to get BJs from 20 year old sorostitutes in nasty bathrooms (seems like good advice for Ben)! And if he had any credible evidence he would’ve prosecuted the dumbass for being a dumbass.
I think it was right on the mark.

Bens name is MUD! I’m sure this punk wouldn’t like it if someone did what he did to his own sister.
And if someone falsely accuses your brother? Or if people call him a rapist without knowing the facts?

Fred Bright knows Ben is guilty but with out the victim testifying he can not prove it in court. Another athlete walks free.
Is that right? Really? What do you know that we don’t? You haters are willing to talk that way about a human being. You really need to take a look inside yourself.

  36. The DA looks like one of those Good Ol Boy DAs we have here in the South, sounding like he was re-enacting a scene from Dukes Of Hazzard and now Big Bad Ben is off 2 terrorize the Boar’s Nest patrons until Bo and Luke use Daisy 2 set Ben up… What. A. Joke…

“Once Ben grows up he’ll realize he needs professional help.I’m sure there’s quite a few professionals willing to work with him and bend over backwards for him.”
Are you talking about therapists ..or prostitutes??

  38. Geezus, Florio, do you and Bright buy your toupees at the same place? And how many nails does you use to hold yours on?

  39. I am still disturbed by the bruises on genitalia.
What the F was that about?
Can a female please explain how that can happen besides a guy basically doing it with his hand?

  40. now if that had been a player, from another team the steelers fan wouldnt have these dumb ass comments.

  41. @The Real Shuxion …
There could be vaginal bruising in consensual sex if the sex were rough or there wasn’t enough lubrication. Or it could be the result of assault, attempted assault, or penetration by hand or foreign object. The DA said the medical exam could not confirm that any penetration had occurred.
Toward the end of the press conference, the DA said there had been a lot of sexual conversation between the two in the VIP area and that she was very drunk and he was intoxicated. He said there was plenty of blame to go around for everyone, including most of his entourage and her sorority sisters. He talked like they both got drunk and got themselves into a bad situation. And he obviously thought Ben was a jackass. But I can’t see a prosecutor who thinks a rapist is getting away telling him to “Grow up” and saying there was plenty of blame to go around.

  42. Well, since it is a pretty much a given that Roethlisberger did not commit a crime other than too much smooching with a drunken underage kid, a few more questions arise:
    1. Will this girl and/or her parents be charged with anything related to her underage drinking, i.e., breaking the law and public intoxication?
    2. Will the establishment that it happened at be charged with serving alcohol to a minor (s ?) ?
Since this extreme intoxication of a minor led to all of this money spent, labor wasted, etc., I would think a fine is in order for her, for the bar, etc?

  43. Big Ben does need to grow up, but it’s also clear the DA thought most associated with this event could learn something about growing up.
20 year old college girls shouldn’t be engaging in sexual conversations with liquored up pro athletes. What did she think was going to happen? He was going to follow her to the bathroom to help her with her hair?
And NFL QBs shouldn’t get liquored up, hang around college bars and hit on girls. They should only reserve that behaviour for the sidelines during a NFL broadcast and where you substitute “college girl” for “Suzie Kobler” – where it’s really funny and can be secured on You Tube for all time.

  44. @steeelfann …
The DA addressed one of your questions in the press conference (after the point when ESPN and the NFL Network cut off). He said serving alcohol to someone underage and underage drinking are both misdemeanors that normally are handled by another department and don’t cross his desk. He said they know Ben bought shots and the waitress brought them back, but they can’t prove who drank them. They know the girl was drunk. They’re not going to pursue misdemeanor charges against either of them. They are, however, going to take a hard look at how clubs/bars serve alcohol in their college community. I don’t recall any comment about charges against the nightclub.

    Hats off to the Steelers.
Gimme one shred of evidence. Wasn’t he supposed to grow up after the motorcycle crash? Stay away from situations where he might get accused of sexual assault? Supposed to become a great leader?
None of it worked. His teammates questioned his toughness last year and Ben would probably ride his cycle fast as hell no helmet again if he could get away with it. Steelers have a lot of problem guys. Jets are gonna “rehab” Holmes cuz Rex ain’t scared of players like Tomlin is and Revis, Mangold, Kris Jenkins, and Scott will keep everyone’s asses in check while Sanchez develops into a leader.
Who’s the Steeler leaders? Ward (voted dirtiest player), Harrison (wife beater), Palomalu (wonderful guy)?
So, how’s your locker room doing? I hear the locker room is divided, some of the guys are real pissed Holmes left. Depending on Ben’s treatment, there might ACTUALLY be a locker room schizm.
Steelers are NOT headed into this season looking good, despite their level of talent. I gotta say though, Dennis Dixon looked good in his start last year in case worst comes to worst and they boot Ben.

  46. Hey Phokus,
In the court of law, you are presuumed innocent
until you are found guilty by a group of your
    peers.
