Keyshawn rips "someone on the network I work at"

Former NFL wide receiver and current ESPN analyst Keyshawn Johnson believes former Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant has gotten a bum rap in the run-up to the draft.

And although he didn’t name any names, Johnson blames at least one of his own ESPN colleagues for that bum rap.

“It pisses me off to listen to some of these [draft analysts] talk about Dez,” Johnson told Don Banks of SI.com. “I heard someone on the network I work at say his stock is going to be questioned because his mother was a former drug user or seller. Are you kidding me? Are you serious? Because his mom did that, therefore his stock will drop?

“I think anybody who judges him and who he is based on his family, it’s ridiculous. He’s getting hit with a lot of stuff that doesn’t have anything to do with who he is as an individual. It’s OK for Colt McCoy to hang out with the Manning family and work out with them, but as soon as Deion [Sanders] hangs out with Dez Bryant, it’s an issue. What kind of double standard is that?”

I’m not sure which draft analyst said on ESPN that Bryant’s stock is going to be questioned because of his mother, but I hope that whoever it was, ESPN has him do an on-air, draft-day debate with Johnson about Bryant. I know I’d tune in.

Good point MeShawn, good point. But you do need to remember that the Mannings are Gods and can do know wrong. Their intentions are obviousely good while Deion’s are simple evil.

  6. benniehifive says: Apr 13, 2010 7:44 AM

Sorry Keyshawn, but if your mom is a known drug user or dealer, I think your stock has to, at the very least, be questioned. That’s why they do the interviews at the combine, you know…to question.

  7. downwithdansnyder says: Apr 13, 2010 7:44 AM

Umm, I don’t think it was Deon per say that was the problem. It was his connection to the agent.
And everyone needs to remember that Johnson in on the record (video interview) saying there was nothing wrong with the L.A. riots and that he’d participate again and had no regrets becuase the stuff was “free” (not to the shop owners).
I wish you could find that interview and maybe put some fram of reference about Johnson’s idea of right and wrong. He’s an idiot, but fun to listen to…most of the time.

I am pretty sure that it has been reported that Deion has a history of influencing college players to go with his agent which is what the issue was. I am not sure if Manning has been accused or has a history of doing the same thing. Just looks like another guy trying to use race to describe something. I do agree that what the kids mother did should have no effect on him, especially if she has recovered and helped her son get into college and be drug and crime free.

  10. fstopblues79 says: Apr 13, 2010 7:47 AM

It was Todd McShay that said that. I remember listening to him say that thinking “what does he mom being a drug addict have anything to do with his stock”? I have to agree with Keyshawn 100% on this one. To question his work ethic is one thing, but to mention his mom is pretty bad. Also I’m sure these teams are feeding the media stuff so his stock drops so a team can get him later in the 1st.

  11. Toombs says: Apr 13, 2010 7:48 AM

I have to agree with Keyshawn on this one… That is a bunch of BS. Dez hasn’t done anything out of line yet and he is already being judged. it’s one thing if he himself was a drug dealer. I’m not a big fan of these so-called “draft analyst”. They are a joke!

    @Facts Domino
Whether you like Deion Sanders and his personality or not is irrelevant, the fact is that Dez Bryant was suspended for almost an entire season for lying about something that a lot of the top college players do anyways. Should he have lied about it? No of course not but the punishment was way too harsh when really he is only being punished for lying.

  22. Ice says: Apr 13, 2010 8:07 AM

Dez admitted on Sirius that he also sold drugs ‘when he was very young’. If I’m a team about to drop millions of dollars on a guy, does the fact that he was raised by drug dealers and selling drugs affect my decision? Of course. Whoever said it at ESPN was correct. Keyshawn can complain, but he knows it’s the truth. His stock will take a hit because he’s spent his entire youth around drugs. Is it fair to Dez? Maybe not. But that’s the way it is.

  23. ras6111 says: Apr 13, 2010 8:08 AM

  25. smithopher says: Apr 13, 2010 8:15 AM

I agree with Keyshawn, this guy has people talking bad about him already and he hasn’t even had the opportunity to disprove these allegations. If you think this guy is an elite talent, then draft him. Teams need to have more faith in their own ability to develop young players into quality, respectable veteran NFL players.

  26. birdmancometh says: Apr 13, 2010 8:17 AM

Well, that makes some sense, but a guys background often does influence his behavior. You don’t have to look any farther than Vick, PacMan, or Santonio. Not saying Dez can’t put that behind him and move on, but the odds aren’t in his favor. He needs to detach from his past life completly. Nothing wrong with working out with Prime Time, I think thats good for him.

  31. QJ1984 says: Apr 13, 2010 8:29 AM

I dont agree with Meshawn often but I have to on this. The “character issues” that the kid has are not half as bad as people are making them out to be. To me he’s just an immature kid, who needs some guidance. If he was a Santanio Holmes or Pacman Jones type of risk, it would have surfaced while he was in college. It hasnt.

  32. P-Slice says: Apr 13, 2010 8:30 AM

Keyshawn is right but doesn’t understand that the draft is like politics. Things are said intentionally to inflate or deflate value so that one team might obtain such a person as they desire at a position they are in on the board. It’s actually a compliment to have a person with some much talk. Any publicity, good or bad, is still free publicity.

  33. Peter says: Apr 13, 2010 8:33 AM

Hey Facts Domino, it’s not about comparing Deion to the Manning family dick head! It’s about hanging with influencial people. So you are saying McCoy can hang out with the Mannings, get tips on how to be a better qb, go out and eat dinner and it’s all good. But the minute it’s Deion and Dez doing the exact same thing, it’s a problem? I know a lot of people don’t care for Deion, and that’s why it’s a problem. You can’t have double standards like that!

  39. mikepiazza says: Apr 13, 2010 8:44 AM

who cares what Meshawn thinks? Below average commentator who obviously has to to make this about race. NFL teams spend a lot of money on draft choices and they do look at family upbringing/environment to help them get an overall pic of the prospect. Take Mershawn Lynch from Buffalo for example. Seemed like a nice kid, brought up by his granny but lived in a tough neighborhood in Oakland Ca. He has given the Bills and their fans some headaches….just saying. Doesn’t matter what color you are, it’s about the other things.

Look how far ignorance travels !!! I’m not a Keyshawn supporter BUT he has a point … What difference does it make what the man’s mother did !!! I thought the draft was based on your skills and presence at school … now you have to be affected by what a family member did ?!? If that’s the case then we ALL would have skeletons in the closet somewhere along the family tree … What’s next ? Are they gonna be judged by what a cousin or uncle or godparent did ?!? Whatever analyst made that comment should stop trying to create a media circus and allow the man to be looked at in a football view not by putting his family on “The View”. And further ignorance is this person writing ahead of me … I don’t think Keyshawn was comparing Deion to the Manning’s, I believe his point is that while one player is demoralized the others are boosted just because they hang out with a notable player like Manning !!! so does that make McCoy or any other player squeaky clean ?!? yeah, right … You must not like Keyshawn or Deion, because what the hell does ANY of what you said have to do with the over all point Keyshawn was trying to make ?!? (@ Facts Domino) JUST PLAIN IGNORANT !!!

  44. We need linemen says: Apr 13, 2010 9:05 AM

In the run up to the 2004 draft a lot of play was made of Sean Taylor’s father being a police officer. His family situation was seen as a positive.
What wasn’t being reported was how unsettled his childhood had been. No one realised the trust issues it had left him with. Washington didn’t make a mistake drafting him, but they might have been better prepared to help him through the early years of his career if they hadn’t simply accepted that his father being a respected police officer had a bearing on Taylor’s ability to handle the life of an NFL star.
The same applies to Bryant. What his mother did has no bearing on what he will do with his life. At worst he seems poorly organised, terminally laid back and a little naive. He might need a little support from the team. He might need someone to make sure he get’s to practice on time. He’ll almost certainily need someone to help deal with financial side.
As for the difference between Sanders and the Mannings. Sanders is renowned for being lazy and relying on his outstanding physical talent to overcome a lack of preparation. Former team-mates have claimed that his example compromised the training habits of some younger, less talented players, which led to them getting cut. Though personally I don’t really see that as Sanders’s problem.
Conversely, the Mannings are renowned for the intensity of their preparation.

    Dear MeShawn,
Here is how life works. You look at the past and discriminate about which you have learned in that respective life.
Now, someone is caught lying. Bad act, possible bad character trait.
Someone acts arrogantly and makes excuses. Another bad act, possible character trait.
Someone get suspended from their team. Bad act, good chance of character trait issues.
Someone comes from a bad drug-using parental role model. Bad act, real strong chance that poor parenting occurred that passed on poor character – life skills.
You look at others and see people like Pacman Jones, who also had family types that liked to sell drugs from home. You see the character that he carries.
Now you think, geez, looking at this life-long series of events, well gee whiz, there is a fairly good chance this guy is a chump. And he wants me to pay him millions.
Maybe if you were paying him Meshawn, you would discriminate in a very detailed way before you tossed a bunch of money at him and provided his teammates with a poor teammate as well.
You see Meswhawn, this is NOT NEW. There is a body of work to look back on, i.e., Michael Vick, Marcus Vick, Pacman Jones, Charles Rogers, Rae Caruth, and we could go on and on and on. If you don’t raise your kids the right way, percentages go up that the kid will turn out to be useless. Not always Meshawn, but the percentages go way up.
Do you get it yet?? Probably not. Meshawn.

  57. War_Paint says: Apr 13, 2010 9:44 AM

Here’s at least part of the deal and an important part that some are willingly looking past. If you’re playing college ball you can’t get within 100′ of an agent and expect to retain your eligibility.
Bryant was hanging out at Neon Deion’s house and Sanders has a well known relationship with his former agent. Many suspect that Deion is a shill for said agent and steers young impressionable players toward him. When the NCAA got wind of this Dez was questioned about it and was caught lying about it. That’s why he was suspended!
If Bryant ever wants to be considered an adult he needs to take ownership of this and learn from it. I can’t see how it benefits the kid to have known idiots like Johnson playing the race card in his name.
NFL team owners are wising up to diva/trouble types and clowns like Meshawn & Deion can’t change that no matter how much they might dislike it.

Todd McShay is simply reporting the facts in which teams teams account for. This is a factor, even if- that douche bag piece of $hit- wants to admit it.
The fact is that a very high percentage of people are who they associate with. Teams know this. McShay, a reputable name in drafts, also knows this and has reported a fact.
The issue I have is that Keyshawn clearly manipulates the facts when bringing up Deion and the Mannings, and obviously creates a racial topic.

  62. shaunypoo says: Apr 13, 2010 9:51 AM

Sorry, but I think it is totally fair to judge, to a degree, a person based on the people that influene their life. A mother is a person that is formative to a son, and the fact that his mother dealt drugs may lead him to believe that this type of lifestyle is acceptable. If she changed and is still an important part of his life, than that should also be taken into account. Of course it should not be a significant part of the equation, but to think that it isn’t a part of the equation at all is naive. If he hung out and sold drugs with his cousin, but his cousin went to jail while he managed to play football in college, then it is within the right of every team to do it’s due diligence and figure out how this may have affected him, especially if he is a high draft choice.
We all judge, and we all assign differing degrees of importance to varying issues. I think that this can have an affect on who he is. He is lazy and he lies. These are proven by missing and being late to practices and lying about his relationship to Deion. The punishment was too harsh, IMO, for the lying thing, but he still did it.

  63. inmotion2207 says: Apr 13, 2010 9:52 AM

I don’t care for Key too much because in the past he has been somewhat hypocritical, but on this one I agree 1,000%. What kind of butt hole would bring a person’s mother into the conversation? Instead of giving the woman credit that she helped her son make it through college despite her addiction, he dissed her! Come on! and as for Deion / Dez – Manning / McCoy analogy he is right about that too.

  64. Zaggs says: Apr 13, 2010 9:56 AM

Well Keyshawn lets look at the facts. Coly McCoy’s agent is not the Manning’s agent. Dez Bryant’s agent is the same as Sanders.
I’m sure the fact that the people who keep bringing this up are black has absolutely nothing to do with anything.
Nor is anyone specifically relating falling draft stock to a druggie mother but rather to the environment that created at home. If someone had a rough childhood and don’t seem keen on following rules, is it not a legit question?

The only question with Dez is work ethic, his natural abilities are astronomically off the charts.
But actual work ethic and fire in the belly for the game of football, you seriously have to question?
I think the mother excuse is a poor way to rate a player, it hasn’t affected his college career.
The only thing that affected his college career, was the relationship he had with Deon Sanders and the way Deon hooks college players with agents.
But keyshawn did make an inetersting point about Colt McCoy hanging out with the Mannings, it would be creating a double standard.

I don’t particularly like Keyshawn, but he is correct. To say that someone’s draft stock will fall and call out him because of his mother is wrong, and unfair in the extreme. The Manning’s can do no wrong. You don’t think the Manning’s try to influence young players every bit as much as Deion? You would be wrong. The question is, why is Deion’s every move questioned and the Manning’s simply do whatever they like? Is it race? Or is it simply because they are more careful in their manipulations?

Whomever started using the word “racist” (whatever that means these days), please explain who is using skin color has a negative. Get OFF THE RACE.
People are commenting on BEHAVIOR. Get it?
Behavior, for a good part, comes from the way one gets parented, gets taught morals, etc.
Nobody is stating that one cannot survive a negative childhood, but it makes it harder, that is all. There is more of a chance for a person to become poor, have bad habits, be selfish and think about themselves always, when raised without a strong support system.
Nothing in stone, but everyone knows it.
If person A grows a garden, supplies it with good watering systems, plenty of fertilizer, the right soil, the right sunlight, weed it, etc, then they get a nice garden full of good vegetables.
The second person plants seeds without preparing soil, they don’t pay attention to the watering, they don’t weed it, they don’t watch out for pests, well they usually get a less than adequate garden.
Same thing. If someone decides to sell drugs, then they don’t care enough about the damage drugs does to everyone, the violence and crime it causes, and the dead end it is to almost all. They choose the money. Well, that is a decision, a bad one. You can end up effecting your children in a negative way.
We are all judged by our actions. Sure some sell drugs and turn their lives around. But how many sell drugs and go down the toilet? It is percentages people. Quit whining about race, racists, race-based, blah, blah. Mannings have nothing to do with Dez Bryant. How come Jerry Rice never had his character questioned when being drafted? Why not Walter Payton? Why not Reggie White? Why not Larry Fitzgerald? Give it a break, grow up. You too Big Ben.

  79. koast says: Apr 13, 2010 11:19 AM

    Poor Taste Keyshawn!
First why even bring McCoy and the Manning family into your debate? Its like “Jimmy’s parents let him stay up late…”
Secondly, do you think pulpit pounding is going to help his cause in the public eye? Every time one of these bravado laden WR’s speak up they do nothing but reinforce the wide brush we’ve painted them with.
We’re very sorry about the fact that YOU, Keyshawn have helped in making things this way for young receivers, and the worst part is your too self-absorbed to get it.
Dez, its only fitting that you sit until 17-25, you’ve lied already once this year and you surround yourself with bad decision makers, which makes me believe you might be a bad decision maker yourself.

    Naughright incident
In 1996, while still quarterback at the University of Tennessee, Manning dropped his pants while being treated by assistant athletic trainer Jamie Ann Naughright. After an investigation, the university concluded the incident was a “mooning” gone awry and not sexual in nature, and Manning was disciplined and required to apologize in writing to Naughright.[41] In 1997, the university settled Naughright’s sexual harassment claims (which included the Manning incident) for $300,000. In 2003, Manning settled a 2002 lawsuit filed by Naughright, on confidential terms. In the suit Naughright had alleged that Manning: A Father, His Sons and a Football Legacy, a book written by Manning, his father, and author John Underwood, defamed her.

Probably not , but since they’re about to invest millions of dollars in these guys, it probably doesn’t help you to be raised in a home where you were never taught the difference between right and wrong.

  96. RUGGERLAD says: Apr 13, 2010 12:55 PM

Hmmm, let’s see, the Mannings were raised by a former NFL QB… and that’s good, right? And Bryant was raised by a drug-using drug dealer… and somehow that is a good thing to Keyshawn?
I think Keyshawn is trying to make this a race issue… which is funny because for a WR, he sure played like a white one…too bad he acted like a jackass off the field… a grey one.

No where during Johnson’s rant do you morons see race mentioned, but somehow the leap has been liberally taken here for some reason. I think he was simply referring to how interaction between one player is taken as a positive and another is a negative, while Sanders is just as iconic as Peyton Manning as a former player idolized by this younger generation of players. I wonder what’s on you guys mind 24/7 in order to make that leap?
Furthermore, I fail to understand why Deion is a “bad” person. I don’t recall Sanders ever being in any off field trouble during or after his playing days. Or perhaps you’re confusing him and Michael Irvin because all of those blacks look the same to you. Maybe that’s it. I’m trying to figure this out, so help me out. I hope Corey Chavous is on with Mike Mayock, Brian Billick, and Steve Mariucci on NFL Network’s draft coverage. There are still problems with the NFL Netowrk’s coverage but it’s a lot more insightful than that of ESPN.
As for Dez Bryant’s fall, I think it will only appear to be as deep as Michael Crabtree’s because this is a far more amazing class than last year’s and there are a lot more good wide receivers out there. I even have Arrelious Benn past Dez. At the end of day 1, Keyshawn will stop hyperventilating, and can dry off his tears in Mel Kiper’s hair because I would be shocked if Dez Bryant gets past picks 12-19. The only two teams I don’t think are strongly considering him there, and the 49ers have two picks, are Pittsburgh and Houston.
That said, does Kubiak have the kind of eye Shanahan does for running backs in mid-late rounds that can fit his system? If so, Houston could be in play. If Matt Schaub can throw for 4800 yards without Owen Daniels and with defenses knowing he is going to throw, what would he do with Dez Bryant? Then again,. Regardless, I’m more excited to see where Arrelious Benn goes because he reminds me of my favorite receiver, the hardcore leader Anquan Boldin.
I have the Pats trading up past the Bills to get Tebow in the second round with one of their picks, but if Benn slips to them and they pick him, they will have stockpiled the next wave of offensive talent.

Raidersteve413 You are about as african american as Rush Limbaugh. Chris Carter has said nothing to indicate he is a racist though he has stated FACTS regarding preferintial could (never speel that word) treatment for white players.
What Johnson is saying is that if Bryant is wrong for hanging out with Deon then so is Mccoy for hanging with the Mannings ( Bryant would have benn suspended regardless of what he said.)
All you assholes saying that what people in your family do or HAVE DONE in their past can attest to who you WILL be then it is true that most white people are drunken racist who want nothing more than to destroy a complete race of people based solely on their skin color.
It is safe to say that the entire Kennedy clan are imbred rum runners and criminals. George Bush’s daughters will go to college and sell marijuana to get money.
I can’t believe you peopl attack Deion Sanders, the dude has NEVER been in trouble with the law yet, YOU PEOPLE always seem to call the dude shady…. WHY? please explain the reasoning.
Lying to the NCAA is what COLLEGES and UNIVERSITIES do everyday when they say they don’t pay top recruits to attend their school. USC, TEXAS, MICHIGAN, PENN STATE, they all do. But poor Dez gets a year long suspension for lying about having lunch with Deion.
And to finish I say this according to the definition of racism a Black man cannot be racist as his ideologies and thoughts could never influence public opinion or policy. Please look up the word before you use it.
