NFL on Kroenke’s bid: “The rule is clear and he recognizes that”

The moment Stan Kroenke announced his intention to buy the remaining 60% of the Rams that he doesn’t currently own, speculation began about what he’ll do with his ownership of the Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello puts Kroenke’s new conflict of interest simply to Mike Klis of the Denver Post: “The rule is clear and he recognizes that.”

The rule states that Kroenke can’t be the majority owner of another sports team outside its home market if that team plays in the same city as another NFL team.

That means Kroenke’s intended bid for the Rams will be complicated. He seemingly needs to sell or transfer his ownership of the Denver teams. Yet a statement from his company released Monday said:

“Mr. Kroenke and his family remain fully committed to Denver.”

Would transferring ownership to another part of his family be enough to satisfy the league? We’re having trouble seeing how that statement meshes with the NFL’s policy.
