Bess says his jersey number isn't for sale

It’s after 8 PM ET, which means members PFT Planet still checking out the site are the ones that would be interested in a jersey number story.

(Although writing that guarantees comments to the contrary.)

Brandon Marshall was just made a $50 million man, but the agent for Dolphins wideout Davone Bess says all the money in the world couldn’t take away Bess’ number 15.

“His No. 15 jersey is not for sale. Davone entered the league with it and
will finish with it,” agent Kenny Zuckerman said in an email to our buddy Alex Marvez at FOXSports.com .

We’re not trying to make this a controversy.  Zuckerman was careful to preface that remark by saying how excited Bess was about Marshall’s addition to the team.  The decision on the jersey was all Bess.

“I told Davone we can probably name our price, especially with the
contract Brandon just signed,” Zuckerman said. “If I had anything to do
with it, bidding would have opened at $500,000.”

Um . . . do agents get a cut of jersey swapping transactions?

1. Good for you Davone, dont give up your number, so the dolphins will just cut your ass and then Marshall can just take the number…

2. i wouldn’t give him $hit for the number.
the fact this guy is even commenting on it means
he’s trying to grab ca$h.
If I was him, I would leave 15 in Denver and move on.
Kobe changed #’s and LeBron is going to.
Plant your OWN flag B.

3. HAHA Marshall got traded cuz he was unhappy and being a prick….well now he knows what it feels like to have a prick as a teammate.
Good job BESS!

4. Go Bess! Keep your number 15…you deserve it…besides Marshall needs a new number to go with his new beginning..just take 85 Brandon that way atleast you can keep the ‘5’, im sure Kory Sperry wont mind as he may not be on the team come week 1 anyway.

5. “His No. 15 jersey is not for sale. Davone entered the league with it and will finish with it,” agent Kenny Zuckerman said in an email to our buddy Alex Marvez at FOXSports.com .
Translation- You just got paid $50 million….Make us an offer we can’t refuse….

6. New start, new number, tell him he can keeep it. Marshall can get it when he gets cut if he still wants it.

7. will davone bess even get 15 td’s in his career? probably not. let a real player have the number loser.

8. $500,000 wow i would give up that jersey in a heartbeat with those digits…besides u make the number the number dosent make you

9. Take the money, especially if it’s more than the total of your undrafted rookie deal. If not this kid isn’t very bright.

10. Marshall will only make you better, Bess. Take one for the team, and in the long run you will all make a lot more money.

Take the money kid, then you have something to show after you get cut.

…you guys seen a Dolphins game in the last couple years? Davone Bess is (was) our best WR, he’s about as likely to be cut as Chad Henne.

13. Love this kids attitude! I started it this way and will finish it this way…I think that is what they say in the BK drive through too.

14. I agree with TheToolofTools “Plant your OWN flag B.”
Nuff Said… Fresh Start Let’s do this cousin.

15. I’m a little thrown off by all the sarcastic comments…Bess is an above average receiver that will be able to find a roster spot in the NFL for the next 10 years AND apparently the number means something to him AND he’s doing something wise with his 6 figure salary that makes him not desperate for cash.
Good for him.

16. I do care about jersey number stories (how sad). Thanks.
Just give him the number and in return ask that he stays away from McDonalds bc you need him on the field.

17. Who’s Davone Bess? The guy the Dolphin’s are gonna cut so Marshall can have his number?

18.
Good for you Davone, dont give up your number, so the dolphins will just cut your ass and then Marshall can just take the number…
Being he was their best WR I doubt that and if they did then it works out for him because then he could get more money then a rookie minimum.

19. Bess will be a great phins receiver to come. The difference between Bess and Ginn is that Bess actually catches the ball. The Dolphins stole Bess- getting him as an undrafted rookie and actually making the team. He will be a great #2 receiver and his numbers will get better now that they have a deep threat…. GO PHINS!!!!!!!!!!

20. The kid seems like a good receiver. He may be a star one day. But starting your relationship with the teams new star player that way is plain stupid. You can apologize by giving up the number. You could have kept it quietly, but you opened your stupid mouth. I’m sure Parcells will explain it to you.

21. You guys are idiots… Davone’s not going anywhere!!!
This sucks because I thought as soon as we traded for Marshall I thought poor Davone will get pummeled by Marshall for his number

22. Marshall should wear “0” for the number of times he has helped lead a team to the playoffs in his career….

23. Uh Oh! Honeymoon’s over! Marshall will be punting footballs by September! He hates it when he doesn’t get his way.

24. Clearly some people have no idea who Davone Bess is. People have been comparing him to Welker. When Henne gets going Bess is going to shock some people and I have a feeling Marshall is going to help a lot with that.

25. …you guys seen a Dolphins game in the last couple years? Davone Bess is (was) our best WR, he’s about as likely to be cut as Chad Henne
thats like saying Ryan Fitzpatrick is the bills best qb…. no real glory in making that claim….

26. popeye is right, bess is a fine player. congrats to him for representing oakland this way. good to see an athlete who turns down some cash for what he believes in.

27. Bess isn’t going anywhere. He’s as quality of a number 3 receiver (although he’s playing as a #2 receiver right now) as I’ve seen.

28. It figures that Florio writes a nonsense article on Marshall while he has completely missed the major Marshall story: his 4 yr, 47.5M dollar new contract. It figures his head is up his browneye so he missed the major story.

29. Wow, even as a Pats fan, I can see how good Bess is now and how he’s maturing into a great slot receiver. You guys saying he’s going to get cut know absolutely nothing about football.

30. Whats with all of this Bess being cut business? Bess was their #1 WR last season and probably will still put up huge numbers this season when Marshall recieves a blanket of coverage. Bess will be the one beating Cromartie down the field.

31. # GaryClark says: “I started it this way and will finish it this way…I think that is what they say in the BK drive through too.”
Ask your manager tonight, once you’ve put on your paper hat and logged into the drive-thru register.
# robert ethan says: “Take the money kid, then you have something to show after you get cut.”
Kid may get traded, but I’ll lay $500 right now, he ain’t getting cut. You shouldn’t comment (even in jest) about crap you obviously don’t know your @ss from a hole in the ground about.
# rchyrch187 says: “Good for you Davone, dont give up your number, so the dolphins will just cut your ass and then Marshall can just take the number…”
Ditto…. @ss, hole in the ground, etc…
# Big J says: “New start, new number, tell him he can keeep it. Marshall can get it when he gets cut if he still wants it.”
Ding, ding, ding! If the comments section was a slot machine… someone just hit the jackpot with three matching village idiots!
# Dolphin Fan says: “You can buy Ted Ginn’s jersey for 15 bucks….”
Check with Gary Clark… some customer drove off without their change the other day – and now he has $16.21 just burning a hole in his pocket.
# stuckpig says: “will davone bess even get 15 td’s in his career? probably not. let a real player have the number loser.”
Hey robert ethan, rchyrch187, and Big J – study stuckpig carefully… he’s what your @ss looks like…. now can someone find a hole in the ground nearby?

32. I hope Marshall WANTS to change numbers. As another poster mentioned it’s a new beginning..
To those posters commenting bout Bess being a loser, you obviously haven’t seen the kid play. He will be a lot more productive with a #1 on our team. He catches EVERYTHING. Far from a loser, and far from the chopping block.. Get a clue before you make a dumb comment.

33. Bess really should give up the number. Marshall is going to make Bess alot of money, he is already a solid young WR and with a true number 1 on the field Bess will flourish.
This R. Moss and W. Welker.

34. Everyone saying he will just get cut is showing their intelligence. The guy has been Miamis best receiver the last couple years.
I heard Wes Welker is also getting cut………..idiots.

35. why is everybody assuming marshall even wants his old number?
i could see him picking a new one.

36. @bleed aqua and orange ….these dudes dont what the hell they talking about..undrafted free agent who led the team in receptions..prepare to hear that name alot you haters with all the rolled over coverage towards marshall’s way this yr. Bess is gonna rip it up in the slot!!!!

37. Davone Bess has been Miami’s most consistent WR the last 2 years. With Marshall he’s a strong 2 or 3. He’s not going to get cut as the Dolphins brass loves him.

38. Just goes to show how dumbed down fans have gotten. Devon Bess is arguably Miami’s best receiver. He’s tough and reliable, and can be clutch at times. He’s basically Miami’s Wes Welker and will compliment Brandon Marshall perfectly.
In addition he’s a hard worker and has his head on straight unlike 99% of the other NFL receivers in this league, including Brandon Marshall.

39. You can tell that alot of people on here dont know anything about the Miami Dolphins,
Davone Bess isnt going anywhere, its ridiculous how people just open there mouth for no reason. If your on a FOOTBALL SITE your should know everything about FOOTBALL if you only know the popular players or just your team then stick to a team oriented page or NFL .com.

40. “All the money in the world” lol right.
@ JoeFitz518 – if Bess has been Miami’s best, why isn’t he a starter?

41. @ ShockAndAwe09NYG
99% of the people on this site I am convinced don’t watch a lick of football. lol at Davone Bess getting cut. Davone Bess is possibly the 2nd or 3rd best slot receiver in football. Dude is an instant 1st down. That is without having a legit outside threat–until now. Please everybody that made a Cut Davone Bess comment—Cut your own wrists!!!

42. In case anyone was curious, he wore #6 in college, so going back to his college number isn’t an option either.

43. Retards above who think Bess is in danger of getting cut are out of touch with football, or at least the Dolphins. Bess is as likely as getting cut as Marshall (read: not at all); some of the surest hands in football and a beast at the slot position.
My prediction: Bess keeps 15, Marshall ends up with 85. Vice versa not out of the question.

44. I love when people talk out their arses about things they know nothing about. Bess led the Dolphins in receptions last year. He isnt going ANYWHERE, you nimrods. So if Marshall wants the number he will have to buy it from him.

45. To all the Bess haters, suck it! If you think he’s trash, go back and watch some tape.
B-Marsh shouldn’t even bother asking. Look at what’s left and pick. Never mind what number you got, just get out there and show us why you got paid. Hope you don’t tank after your payday a al Shaun Alexander.

46. Hmm… who’s more likely to get his way? The guy who was brought in to get the job done in a way the team is willing to pay $50,000,000 for, or one of the guys who was failing to get that job done?
No one is doubting that Davone isn’t a good player, but if there was ever a time to keep your head down, this might be it. I think Miami has made it clear that Marshall will get what he wants, no matter what that is.

NO, Marshall got traded cuz he was unhappy and working for a prick….

48. To all those talking about Bess getting cut, you do realize this guy caught 76 passes last season, right? He hauled in 54 the year before that as an undrafted rookie. He’s a tireless worker and a very solid WR who is only getting better.
He won’t be getting cut anytime soon, and I hope he stands pat with his number
Also, @ Playoffs?! – Outstanding!

True, except he actually helped the Fins win an AFC East Division Title this decade.

50. cracks me up with these comments
if someone isnt named Drew, Peyton, Tom, Randy, Andre or brandon they suck ass and shouldnt be in the NFL (according to the chucklenuts here)
do any of you actually watch football? or just rely on Florio and his TMZ minions?

51. Marshall can have his number if he wants it…
Just wait until the number gets into Bess’ hands at a critical moment in the game…. and wait for the fumble!!

52. You can’t make the assertion that he’s going to retire with it unless it’s so important to him that he’d rather not play. If Bess got traded one day and there was an existing player not willing to give up his 15, he’d have to take something else or quit.

53. Man vone brah desreves to keep #15 he came in with it let him leave with it till thee end go brah handle bizz I see you niggas done made it make me wanna do better espically from the town (east oakland) made it up out here fast tho stay up and do yo thang
