Brandon Marshall is not the "highest paid receiver in NFL history"

Back in early March, various members of the media (us included) got caught up in the notion that Antrel Rolle of the Giants had become the highest-paid safety in NFL history.

The only problem?  He quite possibly isn’t.

So while we learned a valuable lesson via that exercise, there’s still a tendency by some in the media to trumpet a new contract as the biggest one ever paid at a given position.  The latest example?  New Dolphins receiver Brandon Marshall.

His four-year, $47.5 million extension carries a record average of nearly $12 million per year, but only as to the new years.  Marshall signed on Tuesday a one-year, $2.5 million contract.  So the full value of the contract is five years, $50 million.

That’s a $10 million average.  And that’s the same average receiver Larry Fitzgerald generated more than two years ago on a four-year, $40 million deal.

Then there’s the notion that Marshall received $24 million in guaranteed money.  But Fitzgerald got $32.1 million.

Breaking it down by year, Marshall gets $4.8 million per year in guaranteed cash.  Fitzgerald gets more than $8 million.

So Fitzgerald’s deal remains superior — especially since the 26-year-old Fitzgerald will be in line for a new contract after the 2011 season, when the 26-year-old Marshall is completing only the second year of his five-year commitment.

We realize that expressing contemporaneous skepticism regarding information spoon fed by an agent isn’t the best way to ensure that the agent will continue to spoon-feed information, but it’s definitely the best way to serve the folks who are reading this stuff and relying on it to be accurate.

Fitzgerald should be the highest paid. He is the best receiver in football IMO.
Top 5 in league (Top of my head in under a min.)
    1. L. Fitzgerald (Only thing he can’t catch is the Bubonic Plague)
    2. A. Johnson (Almost see above)
    3. W. Welker (I’m a PATS fan, sue me)
    4. C. Johnson (Even if he has like 4 wins in his NFL career)
    5. C.Ochocinco (Find him very entertaining)

B Marsh got what he wanted. A big contract! One peice of advice for you, Brandon – try NOT to get any of your teammates in Miami killed by acting like an a$$hole thug! I’m sure Darrent Williams is real happy for you!

hahaha, Fitzgerald is NOT the best receiver
check the history of Andre Johnson he is by far the best receiver in the league now

    @ Real Shuxion
i agree with the first 2
    then it should be…
    3) Randy Moss(aside from being a PATS fan, he’s still elite)
    4)Brandon Marshall(BEAST)
    5) Desean Jackson(can score from anywhere)

  8. Martin Keamy says: Apr 15, 2010 10:05 AM

@ The Real Shuxion… so you just said best reciever and then chose Ochocinco because he’s entertaining? You couldn’t find anyone who plays s better game?
How about a 1,000 yard-a-year Steve Smith with the abysmal Delhomme throwing to him?
How about DeSean Jackson who tore up the league last year?
    How about Greg Jennings?
    How about Reggie FREAKING Wayne?
You are proof that Pats that fans don’t think.

Shuxion…nice list but where does Steve Smith (CAR) fit into that? One of the most explosive WRs in the game still and I would take Moss over Ocho any day
yes I am a Panthers fan..

i also love ed mcaffery but the other guys were better

  13. hnirobert says: Apr 15, 2010 10:23 AM

Ocho Cinco is in your top five? What about Vincent Jackson, Colston, Roddy White, Reggie Wayne and B-Marshall? I’d take Moss over him too.

  14. tatum32 says: Apr 15, 2010 10:25 AM

Not highest paid, “but biggest pain in the a$$” with the “dumbest young coach to chase out talent” in the league.
Congrats Miami, you were on your way, until you signed this guy….. watch Rex Ryan bait this guy into a dumb comment…

  15. Tcostant says: Apr 15, 2010 10:26 AM

It a shame that Marshall has to live with only $4.8 million of guaranteed cash as part of his $10 million yearly salary. Poor guy. Somewhere Miles Austin’s is drolling at this deal setting the market…

  16. philyeagles5 says: Apr 15, 2010 10:27 AM

the real shuxion – you have randy moss on your team you and put down wes welker as the 3rd best receiver?

  17. xxxsixeightxxx says: Apr 15, 2010 10:33 AM

Who cares??? Only losers sit around and cry about how much money someone else makes or how big their contract is.

  18. xxxsixeightxxx says: Apr 15, 2010 10:40 AM

Andre Johnson is the best reciever in the league. Fitz is the best jump ball reciever in the league but he is far from complete. He is slow in and out of breaks and often relies on size to make catches. Andre Johnson runs every route on the tree crisply. Also shields defenders with his body well. Catches the ball consistantly at its highest point, with his hands, away from his body… aswell as being a jump ball guy and good blocker. He is great in YAC aswell as the vertical passing game. Fitz is the best in 1 category(jumpballs), Andre Johnson is top 3 in every single receiving discipline.

    —————————————————————
My day has been ruined. Some nobody’s who don’t supply their own top 5 have insulted me.
This is why I said off the top of my head in a minute. And Ochocinco is a good receiver, not sure why everyone hates on him.
And Wayne is a product of Manning, if you don’t believe that then you don’t think. (Good point on Jackson though)

    Andre Johnson! OMG!
That dude is a freak, a beast, his a muthaf*ckin’ man amongst boys!
The fire in his belly for the game and then to play like that, for a team like the Texans!?
He is a hell of a player, then he is from the “U” where 99% of your wide receivers and tight ends are divas!
Larry would be my next pick.
I think one guy a lot of you forgot about was Marques(or Marcus) Colston of the Saints. I think people sleep on him because of two reasons!? 7th round out of Hofstra! Period!

  27. Outfoxed says: Apr 15, 2010 11:11 AM

Say what you want about the situation, I personally think his impact upon the group of receivers is going to be tremendous.
1st Ginn will be relegated to opposite side of the field in single coverage. Combine this with alleviating his expectation of #1 receiver on the team and you will see a more relaxed receiver will may learn something from Brandon ala receiver skills.
2nd One and possibly two receivers will up their game this year similar to Colston @ NO. My guess is Hartline along with Bess.
So his ultimate contribution to this set of receivers ready to break out will be more than his personal contribution of catches and tds.

    4) Wes Welker
    5) Andre Johnson

Yes, M. Austin is for real. Imagine if he played all season? His stats were better than any other for the amount of games played AND teams learned he’s the only receiver on the team that can catch, and he still produced. BOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

  35. RUGGERLAD says: Apr 15, 2010 12:43 PM

1 Larry Fitzgerald (best hands, best at jump balls)
2 Andre Johnson (has it all, not the best at 1 thing)
3 Brandon Marsh (most powerful, best blocker)
4 Calvin Johnson (best size / speed combo)
5 Randy Moss (his prime is in the rear view mirror)

  36. RUGGERLAD says: Apr 15, 2010 12:50 PM

Also gotta look at age and if it’s their rookie contract when considering their salaries.
    Fitz 26
    AJ 29
    Marsh 26
    Calvin 24
    Moss 33

Andre Johnson is #1. I love me some Fitz but watch him fall to earth w/ no Boldin and esp. w/ no Warner. B-Marsh, if Henne is the the real deal , will be a top 5. It improves every ball touching player on offense. It even should help the Defense (a little) by getting a few more first downs and kepping them off the field.

  40. Ron says: Apr 15, 2010 1:43 PM

Good article by Florio. But since everyone here is rating the best receivers in the league, let me throw my two cents in this discussion.
    1. Larry Fitzgerald(Best hands in the league and he produces in the post-season.
    2. Andre Johnson(A beast, good hands, and can run every route, but I can’t put him number one because he hasn’t led his team to the playoffs.
    3. Brandon Marshall( Very similar to Johnson in talent, but his off-the field troubles and no playoff games prevent him from being number one.)
    4. Randy Moss( I know, he’s starting to slow down a little, but he is still a force. He led the league in TD’s this year and was 5th in receiving yards this year and this was considered a so-so year for Moss. )
    5. Reggie Wayne(Had a bad Superbowl game due to injury, but Wayne is a great route runner and he has good hands. Not a physical receiver, but he will go over the middle when needed.)
There are several guys that could be on the list, Calvin Johnson, Wes Welker, and Sidney Rice to name a few, but Johnson hasn’t won many games, Wes is a possession/slot receiver and can’t play outside, and Sidney Rice only had one good year(this year).

  41. Boon says: Apr 15, 2010 2:04 PM

    1. Ted Ginn Jr. (over 1,000 every year)
    2. Derrius Heywerd-Bay (catch anything)
    3. Troy Williamson (paid, and rightfully so)
    4. Reggie Williams (T.W+R.W =unstoppable)
    5. Mike Williams (best shape of all mentioned)
    Can we do RB’s next?
