Croyle among group to re-sign with Chiefs

Thursday is the deadline for restricted free agents to sign offer sheets, so naturally it’s the day a lot of players decided to re-sign with their teams.

Thankfully, it’s also the day we’ll wrap up the majority of these RFA signing posts, which have all the drama and excitement of an episode of Entourage.

Let’s get down to business for the few Chiefs fans reading: Quarterback Brodie Croyle, tackle Ryan O’ Callaghan, and center Rudy Niswanger all signed their one-year tender offers Thursday.

O’Callaghan was a nice cheap pickup from the Patriots.  He started 12 games last year after being acquired off waivers. Croyle should be the backup to Matt Cassel again.  Crazier things have happened than a trade market developing for him on draft day.

Breaky Crumble still getting paid. Must be nice to never win a game but still get another year out of the Chiefs.

Whaddya mean “. . . for the few Chiefs fans reading. . .?
Listen Rosenthal, some day very soon you’re all going to be longing for the days when the Chiefs sucked and there fans were quiet. Things are changing. Pioli is working is plan, and we’re starting to like what we see. Getting Crennel, Weis, Thomas Jones, Ryan Lilja, etc. this offseason were all good moves. Plus the Chiefs have a buttload of high picks in this deep draft.
Don’t be surprised if the Chiefs–in the weak AFC West–finish around .500 this year. And you better enjoy it while you can, because starting in 2011, the Chiefs are gonna be contenders, baby! And when that happens you’re not going to be able to shut us up!

Entourage is such a terrible show, the one blemish (well, besides Rome & Deadwood & Big Love & True Blood & Hard Knocks:Jaguars) on HBO’s otherwise amazing resume.

none of these players should start next year. Weigmann or a draft pick over the undrafted yet constantly heralded Niswanger, Cassel over the redneck w/ the way hot wife who was awful in college, and Colin Brown or a draft pick over Callahan. Great backups nothing more.

Let’s not count Niswanger and O’Callaghan out of the starting mix just yet. It remains to be seen how much Wiegmann has left in the tank (although he has to be considered the favorite to start at this writing…), but it is clear that Niswanger will have to greatly upgrade his game if he wants to keep his job. At the right tackle spot, it will likely be a wide open competition between Brown, O’Callaghan and a probable mid-round draft pick (a 1st or 2nd-rounder would almost surely start…). Only Albert, Waters and Lilja are pretty much assured starting jobs at the moment….
